If you’ve ever had your make-up done by a professional make-up artist, you would have seen first-hand that knowing the tricks of the trade can make a world of difference to your overall look.
Unfortunately though, not many of us can afford to have a make-up artist on speed dial every time we want to go out. Which is exactly why we’ve sourced some pro make-up tips from Olle Johansson, International Head Make-Up Artist for Make Up Store.
Amongst other things, he’ll teach you how to apply flawless foundation, contour your cheeks like a pro, conceal dark circles and hide blemishes like it’s no-one’s business. So what are you waiting for? Get your make-up kit ready and get set to learn the top tips of the make-up trade...
Perfect foundation application

When you buy a foundation, test the shade along your jaw line first. If it’s the right shade you won’t be able to see the foundation on the skin - it will simply blend into your natural skin tone perfectly, so that it looks as if it’s disappeared.
For perfect application, pump a small amount of foundation onto the back of your hand. Then, using a synthetic foundation brush, dab a small amount into the brush and start applying it in light strokes, working outwards from your t-zone in light strokes. You should always have more foundation through the middle of the face, and blending it to a fade towards the hairline.

It's a toss up between buying the wrong shade, or applying too much to try and hide the nasties - less is best, and then buff it in, but the wrong shade is simply the wrong shade. Not much you can do about that other than mixing it with something else, or giving it away :-)

Clever tips. My biggest mistake would be a coverage that was too much for me. Perfect application really does make a difference and set the look for everything else.

I find my skin changes colour with the seasons and need to keep an eye on if I'm using one too dark or too light. I'm constantly checking colours on my jawline throughout the year and finding the one I was using a month ago is no longer looking 'right' so I have to switch to something else in my 'kit'.
The worst foundation mistake I think for me is using one that's creating too much shine by midday - I love those that look natural but have great coverage at the same time!

Yay, you have just described how I apply my foundation and yes, it leads to a great finish! I love using a foundation brush and that technique! It's the best tip I've learnt from BH, hence why I've been doing it ever since! I admit to blotchy concealer/foundation attempts in the past with poorly matched shades. Now, I'm so thankful to BH that I'll never make those mistakes again. Mwah! xox

Biggest mistake was not checking my foundation colour in natural light. The store lights def have a huge impact in how the colour appears on the skin.

I agree with switching shades depending on the season, this should be encouraged more ! I need to get a foundation brush, though I try to not use too much foundation as I feel it ages my skin !

Great info. Thanks bh. Based on this I'm pretty sure I've got the right shade. I do always worry that I'm not blending it in enough, especially with powder foundations.

Getting the right shade is my biggest problem which is why I like the new Rimmel Match Perfection Gel being reviewed. This is also one of the reasons I've been using Sheer cover mineral make-up as it comes with two shades to blend it better.

My biggest foundation mistake is when I was young I would pick a dark foundation colour so I could have that tanned look. But of course I went up way too many shades compared to my natural skin colour and looked stupid!
Also, in addition to testing foundation shades along your jaw line, in my makeup class we were advised to pick three shades closest to our natural skin tone, apply a stroke of each and see out of those three which disappeared and blended most effectively.

My biggest foundation mistake was buying one off the internet that I thought would be the same shade as what I always bought. It ended up being a lot more orange than brown....

Stippling brushes are the way to go. By stippling the foundation on, it can provide more coverage. Foundation brushes usually leave my face streaky.
