Mix and match

I’ve always been a mixer and matcher. No I don’t mean orange lippy and blue eyeshadow (but hey, whatever floats your boat). What I do mean is mixing it up price wise. Treating yourself to a gloriously opulent beauty treat, safe in the knowledge that you can justify your splurge because you’ve also scooped bountiful bargains along the way.

My mix and match hall of fame:

La Prairie Midnight Rain
I know, I know, at $275, it’s an indulgence indeed (and definitely something that I hid the docket for as soon as I got home) but I fell in love with it as soon as I smelt it and Marilyn Monroe did teach us the importance of a good fragrance. Really, if we took her lead and wore nothing in bed but fragrance there would be a lot of pj/underwear money saved. Justification over.

Face of Australia Face Palette
This all-in-one beauty is economical and elegant. Working your face, cheeks and eyes (the shimmery pinks also look great under a clear gloss on lips) this mirrored compact is a must for every handbag.

Crème de la Mer
Okay, I know what you’re all thinking, $250 on a face cream, am I insane? No, of course not (well a little, but that has nothing to do with face cream). The Miracle Broth really is a miracle. And with celeb fans that are rumoured to include Posh, Halle and Kiera, I’m sold.

Ulta3 Nail Polish
I simply cannot say enough nice things about this nail polish. It’s cheap as chips (yet chip it doesn’t), comes in every possible colour a girl could want and at just $2 you’d be crazy not to at least try it.

Mixing a costly cosmetic with a glam goodie that’s going for a song is the perfect way to justify the slightly pricey (but oh-so-worth-it) product. And as if you needed anymore convincing, in a time when “credit crunch” is the saying du jour and markets are plummeting left, right and centre, you can be assured that a verging-on-expensive product is one investment that won’t let you down.

What’s on your mix and match wish list?

p.s. Struggling for ideas? Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow as we make Thursday the new Monday (without the blues). See you then!

I definitely have to try La Prairie Midnight Rain after all, everyone needs to splurge sometimes right? Anyway, the fact that I only spend $2 on nail polish (thanks to ultra 3) is a nice incentive.

I actually use an eyeliner that cost me $2, my mascara is a lot more expensive than that but the eyeliner I use is absolutely fantastic it lasts all day!! So I figure if I save on my eyeliner I can splurge on mascara!

I spend big on my foundation, bronzer, primer, cleanser and moisturisers. However once I'm finished with my Dermalogica toner (which is pricey) I'm going to switch to a pure rose mist one instead. I also have the bargain body moisturiser by Innosense which is all natural and cost me $3 from Priceline!

If I added up all the money I have spent on pj's/lingerie, I could probably buy 2 bottles of midnight rain!

La Prairie Midnight Rain is a gorgeous scent, but alas even balancing that with a cheapie buy won't give me the budget 2 buy midnight rain.... definitely on my ultim8 wishlist, perhaps in my wildest dreams! A quick spritz as i walk thru DJ's is the closest i've come 2 midnight rain:) my pawpaw ointment & making my own toner with essential oils are my fave beauty savers!

If I think the product is worth it, I'll definately splurge. But, I also love the bargain buys.

oh i love that LaPrairie bottle it so cute.

hhmm i tend not to compromise too much with splurge vs steal. i tend to prefer the splurge products so ensure i can afford them before i waste my money on cheaper products i won't love.
if i did the same thing with my clothes i'd have a killer wardrobe. maybe i'll take that approach with my clothes now, quality not quantity.

The Face Of Australia Palette looks good. In nice summery colours is definitely worth investing in. Even the Ultra3 nailpolish at the bargain price of $2 is cheaper than buying a daily coffee.

I'd favour splurge in most cases but as a principal I splurge on eyecreams, foundations and moisturisers. My steals would be mascaras (I think some of the cheaper brands are just as great as the more expensive ones) and a cheap eyeliner that glides on well without dragging.

I'm going to but some Ulta3 Nail polish, there's such great reviews about it on BH! Plus, all my nail polish dried up. I'm happy to spend a few dollars on a good product, but I would be just as happy to spend $100!

Oh so many, so little time Sarah for my wish list. I have read the reviews on the nail polish and must get one as soon as I see it in a store when I next go out. If I could afford the face cream then why not I say and that said I am off to check out the other listed products you have even though I can't afford them a girl can admire!

I'm a bit out of topic here. Saw those ulta3 nail polishes at a chemist today. Unfortunately the metallic colours I was interested in had formaldehyde in the ingredients list. Other colours didn't contain the formaldehyde. Can anyone please tell me whether they have just changed the formulation or whether they have different ingredients for different colours? It was sold for $2.50. Thanks.

I don't think I could justify spending that much money on a face cream regardless how how much I saved on other items...! Haha but then again - student budget.
xx
