My mum has just recently been diagnosed with depression, thankfully she went to see her GP (a good family friend) and he recommended a specialist.. definitely the best thing she could have done :)

I think sometimes people don't want to tell other that they may be depressed because they don't want to burden anyone else or they feel that no one else will understand. One of my close friends use to have depression and I'm so glad she got help :)

Excellent, excellent article! It's so important to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of depression. Thanks very much for posting this. I guess it's just important for people to know that they aren't alone and CAN be helped if referred to the right professional.

Oops, forgot to address the question. I have had bouts in the past where I wrestled with depression. On hindsight, professional help would likely have made it alot easier to bear. Professionally, I have encountered quite a few people suffering from depression and from what I see, those who take their meds and stick with them have a much higher chance of recovery.

A friend of mine was after she lost her first child. I find people are ashamed to admit that anything is wrong, however most friends and family are only too willing to help when your at your lowest. I have been there for my friend through thick and thin and got her some help and she is on the road to becoming her old self again. :)

I have been battling this illness for about 20 years, and can safely say that I'd trade my right arm in exchange for a cure.

Child birth can bring on a depression with all those hormones racing around your body.

I definitely have first hand experience with depression/anxiety. I'm a very emotional person and that makes me prone to these conditions. Mine seems to come out of nowhere but I know giving birth can trigger it too. While I didn't get depressed with my first child I'm keeping an eye on myself with this pregnancy because having twins can be overwhelming to anyone let alone a person like me. Lucky for me I know and can recognise the symptoms and I have a wonderful family so I have all the support I need!

I have not experienced this first hand, but it is definitely something we should all be aware of in case a close friend of family member should.

My sister in law says she feels like she must have had it after she had her babies (two of them) and she now says she thinks she recognises that depression must have been what was wrong with her. Poor thing never got professional help but she seems fine now. I think she just kind of grew out of it naturally but obviously she must be prone to it. I'm surprised none of the nurses at the hospital picked it up. Maybe they weren't that well trained in 'depressed new mums' back ten years ago. I think people are much more aware of it today.

I have had a great deal of experience with depression and I think it is important for people to be aware of symptoms. I would also add another common symptom which is crying unexpectedly and without any reason. Also, high levels of anxiety often accompany depression. There are different types of depression which I think needs to be noted and they can only be diagnosed by a professional. GPs are a good first base but if the depression is very marked it is preferable to see a psychiatrist who specialises in mental health and who can then determine what treatment is required, be it medication and counselling or other types of therapy.

Excellent blog covering Depression and where to get help. There would be very few families that have not been touched by depression at some time.

I am one of those people that have suffered depression. Several times in my life I have been diagnosed with this dreaded problem. During my 20's and after the birth of my first baby, 16 years ago, I was diagnosed with post natal depression, I was put on medication and it took about 2years for me to get well. Some doctors and nurses have a lot to answer too, treating depression as if it is not an illness. I finally found a doctor who helped me understand that I had an illness and was not a failure as a human or new mum.

Wonderful that beauties are prepared to actually accept that they have depression - not having first hand experience it is a little daunting thinking how you'd react. I think it is like a lot of things, recognise and accept it and you're on the road to recovery - it may take a long time but you're not alone.

I love these articles as it deal with issues that are often forgotten.
I remember the period of my life where I never thought of anything happy and I thank my high school friends and the teachers who recognised my state and did their best to help me out when I was at my worst.

i suspect that my mom might be suffering from this but it's hard to convince her to go to a GP as she do not feel that she is suffering from that... any ideas how do resolve this?
I did think about lying to her but i guess that doesnt work when we face the GP.
