10 reasons to stress less

The next time you feel yourself getting into a flurry, stop and think about how it might be affecting you…
1.) You’ll inadvertently furrow your brows, which, if done on a regular basis, will speed up the formation of deep-set wrinkles across your forehead and between your eyes. Do you really want to look older than you are?
2.) High anxiety triggers a chemical reaction within your body, causing your skin to become red and inflamed, and sometimes even sensitized (meaning the products you’ve used and loved for so many years may suddenly start to irritate your complexion).
3.) Those pesky little things we call breakouts love all things stress-related and will jump at the chance to add to your list of woes.
4.) Your digestive system won’t work to its maximum, causing essential nutrients to pass straight through your body without being absorbed, and nasty toxins to hang around.
5.) When you’re highly strung you’re more likely to revert to bad beauty habits, like biting your nails, chewing your cuticles, or splitting your strands – none of which are ever a good look.
6.) Stress equals sleepless nights, which equals puffy peepers, dark circles and eyes with no sparkle.
7.) Your friends and family will suddenly desperately need to wash their hair/the car/the dog rather than make an arrangement with you – no one wants to hang out with a stress pot!
8.) Your poor muscles will become all tied up in knots, causing headaches, joint pain and overall bad posture.
9.) Try focusing on getting a task completed when you’re super stressed – bet you’ll have a lot of trouble getting anything done! You’re more productive when you’re calm and collected, so take a deep breath and things will seem clearer.
10.) Life is hard, but there are also loads of fun parts too - if you’re constantly stressed or in a bad mood they’ll just pass you by and you may miss loads of exciting opportunities.

What's your biggest cause of stress? How do you try to alleviate it?

I couldn't agree with with more Deb - stress has so many bad side effects!
I mainly (well pretty much only) get stressed about getting assignments done and doing well on exams - I am in year 11 which is pretty challenging academically so I want to do really well.

Oh and I alleviate the stress by getting assignments done before the night before and studying well for exams.

Omg, BH, you are a god send. Last night i was cramming to write my english essay which was just not writing itself. I spent 6 hours and i only written 200 words. I was stressing so much that i had to go on the internet to find reasons not to stress. Thank you for that informative article. I love you BH s assessment period right now so the level of stress is sky rocketing.

I try and organise myself to avoid the last-minute stress, but BH makes it very difficult (so distracting!)

My thesis stresses me out i am always fretting over it and spend sleepless nights worrying over it. Best way to stress less over it for me is heading to the gym and doing some yoga or pilates to ease my mind

My biggest cause of stress is too long to list, but I've found the best way to deal with it all is to not fight any emotions no matter how unpleasant but to let them pass as the more you fight the more heightened it makes the experience making it worse. I'm big on meditation also, and I don't mean sitting in the lotus position and chanting but simple things that can be done anywhere anytime, whilst walking, standing, sitting, etc and counting and gently slowing down my breathing. I've been practicing it for over a year (everything takes practice), so its become second nature and it makes a world of difference for me. Theres many other things also, like going for a run, cycling or any other sort of vigorous cardio to relieve pent up frustration and stress. But most of all, making some time out for myself during the madness of whatever might be happening during to weak to give myself a treat, be it a mini mani, or a DIY facial, taking etc that will serve as like a reward or just a much needed time out to pep me up. :)

Exams, assignments and my thesis are the most stressful things. I'm a bit highly-strung and things stress me out very easily, which sucks. I just take a break from what I'm doing and clear my head usually. Eating fruit (or chocolate!) helps or taking my dog for a walk. Just getting away from the computer and books is my way of de-stress.

How do I alleviate stress? I take a few minutes off whatever stupid assessment i have to do, and do something i really enjoy, like watch, read or shop (haha). Deb, you make some really good points, like how if you spend your life sulking you'll miss all the wonderful parts of life as well. Also, I spare a moment to think of those kids in 3rd World countries, and then my problems suddenly are totally insignificant.

Wow, I suppose nothing is more stressful than reading how bad stress is for you! hehe Well I try to de-stress by watching an episode of my fav tv show and having a cup of tea. Also making a 'to do' list helps once you can start crossing things off.

I so needed to read this - thanks Deb for reminding me - it's so easy to forget to 'not to stress'.
My best way to alleviate stress is to consciously tell myself 'not to worry' and then I don't. It does really help and nothing is really worth worrying about afterall. Nothing every gets changed by stressing out about it.
Top article!!

This article and all these stress-effects are so true! I have a number of stressors and think being a stress head is part of my genetic makeup but find being proactive and not letting it get in the way can work to my advantage... Helps me to keep on top of things and get more done!

Eeekkk! If only we could push a button and we could relax. Ummm biggest stresses would be thesis research, assignments and exams (but when I graduated it was all worth it!). At the moment it's trying to get my agencies to pay me on time. Stresses to look forward to will include student teaching (aaaahhhh teenagers!). Great article!

My teenagers totally stress me out.I have 6 kids and most are grown up now, but the last few are really taking the cake when it comes to uncontrollable behaviour.I deal with this by balancing the good with the bad, practicing deep breathing, self talk (they will leave home oneday pleeeeeeese), and keeping myself busy.

It's good to remember that stressing doesn't do anyone any good, and doesn't do anything to solve any situation. You can only do what is in your control, and need to let go of the rest.

What am i not stressed about these days.
Bad blood with one brother, tafe, reconciling with dad after 10 years, mums reaction to reconciling with dad (3 breakdowns so far), money troubles due to tafe, trying to figure out how on earth Im going to afford car insurance to learn to drive in my car due to money troubles caused by tafe (they keep making us buy tickets to things and more supplies they should have!)
How do I alleviate my stress? When I figure out what will work I'll let you know. In the meantime Im just going to vent lol.
