Walking for weight loss

I used to be a gym junkie, hitting my fitness club five to six nights a week but since having kids that’s all changed. However, it doesn’t mean I’ve become a couch potato and piled on the pounds. Far from it in fact, I actually feel fitter and slimmer now than I did in my twenties (that’s over 10 years ago!).
When I fell pregnant with my first child I managed to keep up my regular gym workouts until I was about six months, by which time I decided being on the cross-trainer with a great big egg in front of me was no fun at all and group pilates isn’t ideal during pregnancy. Yet I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing at all so walking became the next best thing.
I walked for an hour most nights right up until I was about eight months. I would have liked to continue but pregnancy-related aches and pains made it too difficult so I had to hang up my trainers and rest instead.
After the birth of my beautiful daughter I couldn’t wait to get out and about and enjoy a bit of pavement pounding. Walking while pushing a stroller is not only a great strengthening exercise for you, the fresh air is beneficial for bub too.
Being outdoors and enjoying a bit of light exercise is a great way to clear your mind and energize your body. It also stops you from sitting and watching daytime TV and grazing on snacks that you really shouldn’t be eating.
On the odd occasion I’d go for a walk alone, which was slightly weird (like you’d forgotten something or someone!) but very liberating. No need to worry that you may have to find a place to breastfeed at any moment, no reason to retrace your steps looking for a lost bootie and no having to cringe as your baby screams at the top of its lungs for the entire world to hear!
When walking without the stroller I’d enjoy swinging my arms – not so much that I risked being arrested or at the very least receiving strange stares from passers-by – just enough to get the blood pumping and my heart rate up.
I now have two children and have never gone back into my high impact gym workouts because when I do find time to exercise I’d rather be enjoying the outdoors than inhaling the smell of sweat in a busy gym
Walking is easy and free. You can do it with or without bub and can make it as relaxing or rigorous as you like and if it’s results you’re after, don’t rule out walking as a fitness option as there are plenty of benefits to reap.
What benefits have you gained from walking? How have you achieved weight-loss success?

I love to walk... I find the gym quite repetitive and plus the smell of sweat (and using machines after the previous user sweat all over it) was pretty (how do i say this?) BLECH! I also skip rope for 30-45 minutes every other day (try skipping rope continuously for a minute, its not as easy as it looks!). Definitely seeing results! However, its a loong way to my goal...

I have been seeing a dietician for the last month for insulin resistance syndrome and he said that walking is the best exercise for continual weight loss, and I have lost 4kg in the last month.

I've just started a bootcamp program that goes for a month, two nights a week. I always walked quite a bit with my dog before this but the bootcamp program has made me realise that I was taking it waaay too easy. So now when I take my dog for walks (most nights that bootcamp isn't on) I kick it up a notch and feel even better for it. I try not to weigh myself, but am thinking maybe I should step on the scales now to see if there's much difference in a month's time. Here's hoping!

Walking is great. I used to run and train for marathons and do all the fun runs but found over time my knees were playing up and needed to find something alittle more gentle. Now i am hooked to walking, i just pop bub in pram and there i go, i usually do an hour a day. This morning it was raining for a walk and couldnt go, boy i feel yuck when i havent exercised.

I find when i overdo gym I get bulky and heavier, even when I focussed heavily on cardio and minimised my weight training. Now I do less at gym - I walk and do pilates for core strength. My body is leaner, toned and I just feel better all round. Plus wallking up hills do amazing things for the thighs and butt. Get into it ladaies!!

I love walking. Hubby and I walk two or three times every day, with the dog in tow. It took some getting used to get out there in the wee morning hours, but now I find that it energises me and sets the pace for the rest of the day. A walk after the working day is a great way to destress and sometimes we have another walk after dinner just to start those calories burning off. My butt and thighs are shrinking and hubby is losing his tummy so it must be working. As for the dog, well, he is getting fit too.

Walking is the best excercise!I use to be a jogger but I hated the jarring of the pavement on my body and joints. I find walking much more relaxing and I loose more weight through long leisurly walks than from half hour jogs!!

I really enjoy walking, especially with one of my close friends. We chat and chat and chat and before we know it, we've walked about 3 kms! It's great motivation to walk with someone otherwise I'd make excuses and not walk.

Years ago my work was 6 klm's away and while waiting for the bus, I decided to walk to the next stop. Well 6 k"s away I was at work minus the bus. After that, I HAD to walk regardless of the weather. I was an addict. And fit and slim to boot. Best excercise

Walking is really the greatest exercise, you can do it anytime, although don't forget safety, but I have used it as means of exercise for years and it does get the weight and keep the weight off. The best thing I added to my routine was a heart rate monitor. This enabled me to make sure I really did burn, but also not hurt myself. I was also able to track my improved fitness. It really did make a difference to motivation.

I love walking and have almost been walking for excercise sine 17 years ...now im 26 and i dont feel im losing weight as much as i did before ......why is that? also walking depends so much on the weather that i have stopped walking altogether and joined a gym...and yes it is gross to use machines after some one else sweated all over it ,..but i dont have any other choice ? has my body become "immune" to walking ?

Walking not only makes me feel physically good, it also does wonders mentally. After a busy day it is the perfect way to unwind and appreciate life!

I walk every morning and love it! I cant run due to a knee injury so walking is the best exercise for people wanting to ease into it. A healthy diet and a walk everyday is a great way to loose weight and keep it off!

It is better to do a little walking than no exercise at all.
