Beat the bloat

There is nothing worse than an aching, bulging tummy when you know you have to get into that bikini or a tight, sexy dress. You feel a size bigger than you normally are, not to mention weighed down and sickly sluggish.
So in order to ensure you feel as light as a feather after eating, you need to be aware of which foods can cause you to bloat and what can help you to cure it.
Check out our cheat sheet on beating the bloat to ensure you feel your best everyday…
Culprits
Carbonated drinks: many people blame carbohydrate-rich foods like bread and pasta for bloating, when it fact, some of the biggest causes are carbonated drinks, such as soft drink, sparkling water and beer.
Fruits and vegetables: these, which are regarded as healthy foods can also contribute to gas accumulation in the stomach and the large intestine, resulting in a bloating effect and discomfort in the abdomen. Some of the worst offenders are broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, apples and pears.
High-fat foods: also big culprits when it comes to feeling sluggish and weighed down. The high-sugar, high-fat foods you find in take-away outlets often don’t digest as well as healthier foods and can contribute to stomach discomfort immensely.
Overeating: finish eating before you start to feel too full! Remember, your food keeps digesting after you stop eating, so if you’re still eating when you feel full, it’s only going to feel worse in 10 minutes time.
Cures
Drinking water: though it sounds pretty obvious, drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day can help to pass food through your system more efficiently, leaving less time for bloating.
Eating slowly: rushing your food causes it to all digest at around the same time – which means you’ll start to feel full all at once and probably feel some discomfort.
Herbal tea: herbal teas like chamomile and peppermint tea have been proven effective in treating bloating at the source. Both are known to be used as relaxants to calm the nervous system, soothe gastrointestinal disorders, and ease menstrual cramps.
Metamucil: this supplement works in five different ways to assist your body in feeling healthier. Made from 100 per cent natural fibre, it works to cleanse your insides, help your body’s detox process, and in turn make you feel lighter and more active. It also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels – all you need is a tablespoon with juice each day!
Activia yoghurt: containing Bifidus ActiRegularis, when consumed daily it helps to reduce digestive discomfort such as bloating and gas accumulation. Activia yoghurt also contains no gelatin, so you won’t feel heavy or sluggish!

Eating less bread and pasta. Every morning I have a warm glass of water with lemon juice, it stimulates the digestive system, acts like a lliver tonic - like a detox really. And also Dandelion Tea or Peppermint Tea (really great for discomfort and bloating) during the day instead of coffee and tea. I exercise every day, making sure I do my "core" exercises, really concentrate on that part of the body. Keep a diary so that you can monitor any changes with abdominal discomfort -from food, drink to exercise - eventually you find out what the culprit is! I'd love to see an article on balancing carbs and proteins as many people think carbs are bad - it's all about balance!

Definitely chewing slowly and thoroughly makes a big difference, as well as not eating when you're stressed or emotionally upset...

I find it weird that you list fruit and vegetables as a curlprit, and specify some that cause 'bloating' when they actually aid digestion.

As soon as I eat bread and dairy I bloat grrr.. But I find lemon and ginger tea helps relieve any discomfort I get, I love drinking it! Cucumbers (not lebanese variety though) cause gas accumulation too, so I eat the lebanese cucumbers as they don't.

I read somewhere the other day that having a glass of water in the morning with Apple Cider Vinegar (instead of the usual lemon) is good for digestion. The article suggested starting with a teaspoon and working up to a tablespoon. I'm not sure I could stomach even a teaspoon of vinegar first thing in the morning, though.

I have a lot of digestive problems and I've been to the hospital for it several times.
I've been trying the apple cider vinegar in water thing for about a week (with a little bicarb to neutralise the acid and a teensy bit of cordial or apple juice to make it more palatable) It seems to be helping a little bit. But I have 2 tablespoons. Also you need to brush your teeth afterwards so it doesnt start to eat away at the enamel.
I have to drink between 3 and 5 litres of water a day and avoid nuts, seeds, legumes, dried fruit, anything fizzy and bad foods in general. Keeping me healthy I guess. I have yoghurt to help as well (Activia is a good one). And I dont go more than 2 hours without eating something so my system never goes to sleep.
Im a pretty extreme case though...

I try and drink lots of water. I limit my carbonated drinks to the occassional treat, try and drink very little caffeine and drink peppermint tea and other herbal teas.

I have just been to a dietician after having a colonoscopy and endoscopy and he has told me everything that you have listed above. Well done.
I am now on a new diet which eliminates gluten, lactose and fructose. I have been doing this for about a week and am feeling much better.
Anyone suffering from IBS should look into the FODMAP diet which has been designed by Dr Sue Shepherd as it has evidently changed peoples lives. I am hopefully going to be one of them :-)

great article! I think a good nutrition article to run would be one that dispels the myths of crash diets and metabolism. it's a little-known fact that eating 6 small meals a day is better for you than 3 big ones, and lots of people try to "cut" things out of their diet that they shouldn't be cutting, just controlling their intake of it!

Great article! I think eating foods with high sodium (salt) content also contributes to bloating as salt retains water.
