How-to: meditate

Embrace a sense of calm through meditation
If the chaos and grind of running the rat-race has you all wound up, meditation could be the perfect way to help yourself unwind. Meditation helps to free the mind, giving you the ability to think clearly and calmly and it’s thought to be a powerful tonic for soothing the spirit and improving your emotional wellbeing. Here’s how to do it…
Meditation classes
There are a variety of meditation classes that can take you through the techniqiues for relaxing your mind and chances are, there will be one on offer at your local community centre – so a great way to get started is to sign up with a friend, then once you’ve perfected the techniques in class, you can take them home and put them into practice.
How to meditate
If you don’t have the time to try a class to learn how to meditate, you can have your own meditation session at home. Here’s what you’ll need:
-Meditation music: most music stores excerpt music that has been specifically designed for meditation. Meditation music is a soothing type of music that often contains natural sounds like the chirping of birds or the pitter-patter of rain, which can help to relax your mind.
-Scented candles: soft lighting has an instant calming effect on the mind so candles are ideal for setting the scene for a meditation session. Certain scents such as lavender can also have a similar effect, so opt for scented candles where possible.
-A quiet space: it’s important to remove yourself from distractions if you want to reap the true benefits of meditation, so turn off the TV and put the kids to bed first.
Step 1
Sitting cross-legged in a warm, comfortable space lit with scented candles and filled with the faint sounds of your soothing meditation music, close your eyes and allow your mind to clear. If you struggle to be free of distracting thoughts, try imagining writing them down on a piece of paper then screwing up the page and throwing it away.
Step 2
Imagine a peaceful scene. Visualise yourself on a warm, golden sandy beach or floating in a boat in the middle of a clear, calm ocean. Try to really create a clear picture in your mind, taking note of the sights, sounds and textures round you.
Step 3
Concentrate on the sound of your breathing, taking slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth while visualising your calming scene. Relax for as long as you need. The better you become at visualizing your scene and controlling your breathing, the more relaxed your mind will become.

Can't recommend this enough folks - I find stopping the mind-chatter and staying engrossed in my serene place is the hardest thing. Takes practice, but well worth the effort - the refreshment I feel afterwards is as good as 8 hours sleep, with no dreams :-)

I used to do this when I was little without even knowing what meditating was. Whenever I was scared of the dark or had a nightmare I'd picture a white horse running on a beach and focus on that with my eyes closed until I went to sleep.
Not as good at it nowadays, too many stresses and worries right now! My treadmill is my meditation now...

I generally do the deep breathing before going to bed. I just find during the day it can be a little hard to slow down enough for meditation, even the old brain runs overtime, so my best time is before bed, chores, work and kids are organized, it is me time then.

I think people these days especially find it hard to clear their mind and de-stress. More people you know will meditate (often it's not something they shout about) but there's still a lot of people who think it's 'hippy rubbish'. However, if it works and it enables you to have a more balanced life - then who cares. You'll be healthy inside and out by being less stress and more focused. If anyone is interested in giving meditation a go, don't expect too much of yourself the first time. It can take a while to be able to clear you mind. Stick with it though as you will get benefits in the long run. xx

I really need to give meditation a go.. I need to find a way to shut my mind off and stop thinking.. Because atm it goes all day and night long :(
It would make dealing with life's ups and downs a hell of a lot easier if I could just shut off!!

I can't wait to try this out. Sometimes when I'm in bed I try not to think of anything for as long as I can, and I'm getting better at it. It really helps to clear your mind.

I am finding that at the moment I could really use some meditation time. I have been unwell and extremely tired, so I am going to make it my mission to take some time out to do this, this week.

I've been trying out this meditation technique called Mindfulness for a couple of months now. Trying to handle anxiety in pregnancy and I have to say it's great! The idea though is not to clear your mind because it's impossible to do - our minds are not meant to not think about anything, there will always be something in the background, even if it's thoughts like "look at me I'm not thinking about anything". The idea is to let the thoughts flow and just observe what happens in your body and mind in that moment and not judge yourself for not being able to clear your mind. The not judging part is the most beneficial one I think, it really helps with how you feel about yourself and it also helps to stick with this meditation and not give up because you think you're not doing it right.. Watching and noticing your breathing (without trying to slow it down) is also part of it. It just helps you refocus, bring the attention to the present moment, charge yourself with positive emotions, CALM DOWN...You don't even need a quiet space or a particular pose, it's amazing!
I try to do it every morning for a few minutes and every night before I go to sleep and I have to say I've been sleeping a lot better lately even with the discomforts of third trimester! A few minutes a day is all you need and in time you'll get used to the new way of thinking, it's only beneficial. I used to be against meditation, like Leanne said "hippy rubbish" but I came to realise it's so not :)
for anyone who's interested, there's a website called mindfulness.org.au, there are some audio tracks there to help you get started which really helped me!

I really should be meditating - it would help with all the stresses of the day I'm sure - but when to find time to do it?
