How-to: motivate yourself

‘I really want to get fit, but I just can’t seem to get started…’ Sound like you? Maintaining a regular exercise program strengthens your heart, lengthens your life, increases your energy and makes you feel amazing – so stop denying yourself the good stuff and try these easy tricks for increasing your lacklustre motivation…
Hire a fitness trainer
If you can’t motivate yourself, you need someone else to give you a kick up the butt. A personal trainer is the perfect way to do that. Even if you can’t afford the cost of one on one sessions, you can join a gym group or enlist a buddy to exercise with – that way you’ll have someone else you’ve committed to that you won’t want to let down.
Get fit the fun way
If your lack of motivation is stemming from the idea that fitness is boring and gruelling, you need to reassess your perspective. Fitness can be incredibly fun and social. Why not join up to a community dance class and meet new people while getting active? Try Zumba, like we did! (Look how much fun we had and boy, did we perspire!) Or try a weekly family fun day with your kids, running relays, playing tug-of-war and sack racing.
Schedule it
If you keep running out of time to exercise then it’s time to schedule an exercise routine – one that you won’t be able to weasel out of. An effective way to do this is to schedule an after work jog and pack your running gear in your work bag. When it’s time to clock off, get changed straight away. Once you’re in you’re running gear, you’ll be twice as likely to get going.
What motivational methods have worked for you?

I rather make it entertaining than an appointment. I take the family for a hike or for some playtime at the beach.

I like to workout with a buddy.
You have someone. To hold you accountable if you don't turn up!

Music, I like to make work out playlists on iTunes, and then put them on my iPod. Songs that are really upbeat and fast are likely to get me up and moving!

I go to a gym where there is a creche. Some days I struggle to leave the house however the kids love the creche so much that getting those runners on and out the door is made that little bit easier.

I don't like exercise per se, but I do like dancing, so I go to a dance-based group class called BodyJam three times a week. Love it!

As sad as it is, my mum is my inspirational buddy. She has so much energy and walks every single morning, no matter what. We actually call her Nike (Just do it) as it seems to be her trademark. She always does more than me, so she inspires me not to be too lazy.

Finding an activity that you love is also a good start to get motivated. Didn't like any form of exercise until I did yoga. Group classes are great motivators!

Ok so this is going to sound TERRIBLE! I'm MARRIED to a personal trainer! Actually my Dad is one too! :S Not to mention I have a fully equipped gym IN my house! And yet ... to stay motivated I have to pay to go to a gym somewhere else! Eeeeek ... how bad is that! :O

I think I can be pretty motivated when I want to be. I've been jumping on the treadmill for almost everyday for the past month, for about 30mins. Listening to my ipod/trance music helps pass the time quicker.

I really love walking which is my main form of exercise so it is easy to stay motivated because i really like it. However, I hate the heat, so on really hot days, I like to walk when it is much cooler after the sun goes down. The heat certainly knocks my motivation. I am enjoying all the blogs with healthy and motivational tips. Thanks bh.

I love going for a beach walk and jog with my daughter - she's so fit that she's brilliant to go. She tends to want to do it even if I'm only thinking about it - like this morning with the overcast skies she was keen so it really encouraged me to go too.
I do find that when she's not on school holidays that just getting a glimpse of a photo of Jessica Alba in her prime motivates me!
lol Rewalize! : )

I have been going to the gym for decades now, so it has become a part of my lifestyle...if I have periods that I dont go for some reason, I simply miss it, and feel that I become so sluggish. Knowing that Im doing something good for my whole body (not to mention that my skin is so much nicer and more glowing when I am exercising regularly), and that it makes my clothes sit so much nicer, is enough to keep me motivated to go.

I need a lot of motivation to stay fit. It is easy for me to slack and plaster my backside to the couch. I need to look into fun things like Zumba.

I like relaxation excercise, things like walking the dogs, going to the playground with the kids, shopping(always do some good laps), going to the beach or swimming. I suppose my biggest problem can be weather, if it is cold then I do not feel like going outside at all, this is when I struggle to find my motivation.
I think when you are a mum, you are on the go 24/7 anyway.
