How-to: make small changes and get big results

Make going from the couch to 5k a cinch
Struggling to get off the sofa? Can’t part ways with the chocolate? Here’s how to have (most) of your cake – and get fit too, with a few easy trade-offs…
Portion control
Instead of ditching the chocolate altogether, why not try downsizing? Trade your regular Mars Bar in for a fun size bar – you’ll get all the taste and half the calories!
Fun ways to get fit
If pounding the pavement for hours is your idea of hell, try some fun ways to ‘cheat’ physical activity into your day. Organise a weekly soccer game in the park with friends, try a dance class or take up something you’ve always wanted to try out, like karate – you’ll still be burning calories, but it won’t feel half as gruelling as running the treadmill.
Easy exercise plan
Take the hard work out of scheduling an exercise plan and learn how to get fit the incidental way. Incidental exercise is exercise that can occur naturally and is not necessarily planned – that includes stuff like walking to the bus and pushing the trolley to the far end of the car park. So why not try getting off the bus one stop earlier, parking your car further away from the supermarket or using the stairs at work instead of the lift? It’s the perfect way to get fit, without even trying!
Sweet swaps
Swap your nightly dessert for an equally sweet but way less caloric treat. Try a diet dessert (there’s a huge range to choose from in supermarkets) or make a drool-worthy fruit salad and top with a decadent scoop of velvety low fat yoghurt. Your hips will thank you for it!
What small changes have you made for big results?

Great article, especially when i am trying to get fit and loose a little weight right now! The small changes i make to get results is smaller portions at meals, walking to the shops etc instead of driving and my big one - eating breakfast! I never feel hungry in the morning but that first meal of the day kick starts my matabolism and i burn more calories during the day :)

the hardest thing for me to do was lower my intake of cadbury/lindt chocolate, i use to eat so much of it everyday.. now even if i do sometimes eat a lot of it, i do cardio everyday, so it burns it off.

These are fantastic suggestions! I think I dipped out last night on the portion control tip though - I shared half a block of caramel mousse chocolate with my daughter!
It's rainy again today so I'll be doing a couple of pilates for 10 minutes or so instead of a job on the beach. Oh well! : )

Great tips, very practical. I stick by one rule. I don't go grocery shopping when I am hungry. It makes me buy junk, sweets and salty stuff. This never happens when I am full :)
But I need to go out and get some exercise.

great article, all very true. the best thing that worked for me was cutting down my meal sizes and replacing a few things. Like instead of having a bowl of smiths chips in the arvo id have a bowl of special k without the milk. very yum

Usually I decide to just stairs instead of lifts at uni, and I go for an afternoon walk when its nice and cool. I carry around an apple or muesli bar in my handbag when im out, it saves me going to the food court and buying some unhealthy. I also carry around a small water bottle with me everywhere as well!

I had a friend who lost 2kgs by not eating anything after 7pm, which hard for me cos the first thing I do after putting the kids to bed is grab whatever's in the pantry/fridge & plonk myself in front of the TV! Which brings me to Weight Loss Tip #2: watch less TV...

I cut out all fruit juices as they are high in sugar. I've only lost 6kg but at least its a start.

I needed to give up smoking, so at work instead of going outside straight away to light up at lunchtime, I ate my lunch first and found by altering this habit, helped me to combat smoking. I had a limited time for lunch, so I basically ran out of time to be able to go outside to have a smoke. I had to be really honest with myself to get to this stage, It was difficult to start with, but I persisted and 2 and a half years later I am a non smoker. There are times I still crave a smoke, but my kids keep me on my toes. I have not put on weight either which is good, I suppose it is because I keep an active day routine.

it's so hard to start doing excercise after Christmas and new year, but this may help. I just have to get up and start..

Great tips BH. Shopping when you aer hungry is definitely a no-no, too much junk goes into the trolley! Having healthy and delicious snaks in the house really helps - make a place of cut up watermelon and eat that at night, the water contents will fill you up too so you wont crave more.

Love this blog and all the interesting comments. I always try and take the stairs and I walk a lot. Also I try and eat well most of the time. Drinking lots of water is a must for me, I find it also makes you want to eat less. I agree with Princess Fiona....going to the super market when you are hungry is certainly a very big NO-NO.

I found doing situps and lunges on the ad breaks while watching tv has made a huge difference, as well as downsizing my meals.
