How-to: clean contact lenses

There’s nothing more annoying then pulling your contact lenses out of their case to find they’re covered in smudges. Thankfully though, there is a solution to get them clean and avoid those pesky smudge marks. Here’s how…
Step one: prepare
Contact lens care starts with maintaining proper hygiene, so to get started you should always prep your hands by washing them thoroughly in an antibacterial hand-wash.
Step two: easy does it
Carefully remove one contact lens from the contact case and place in the palm of your non-dominant hand (in other words, not the hand you use to write with).
Step three: tip on the solution
Use your other hand to carefully tip one tablespoon of saline solution over the contact lens so that it covers the lens.
Step four: the tricky part
Taking extreme care, use the same hand (your writing hand) to gently rub the lens back and forth in the solution before carefully flipping over and repeating on the other side. Avoid moving the lens in a circular motion as this movement can cause the delicate material of the contact lens to tear.
Step five: repeat
Now repeat steps 2 – 5 with your remaining contact lens. Now you have clean, clear smudge-free lenses! Just make sure you always use contact lens care saline solution when cleaning lenses, which can be purchased from the chemist and handle your lenses with extreme care to prevent tearing.
Try: the latest lens care innovation from Bausch + Lomb – Biotrue® multi-purpose contact lens solution. Inspired by the natural biology of the human eye, Biotrue® solution helps keep contact lenses clean and moist throughout the day. Bausch + Lomb Biotrue duo pack is $18.99, available at leading pharmacies and optometrists.

I so miss wearing contact lenses - I used to wear them over two decades ago, but an allergic reaction to a cleaning solution put a stop to that. Wearing glasses can be so frustrating, especially when you are at the gym or going for a run. I so miss being able to wear them!

Is it weird to have recurring contact lens dreams where the contacts are so big you often can't fit them in your eye at all?

I am thankful at this stage of my life I have not had to wear glasses or contact lenses. I know how frustrating smudgy sunglasses are, let alone smudgey contacts.

I wear the daily disposable types and I also buy the daily disposable types for my daughter as my optom said they were the most hygenic as I didn't need to worry about cleaning them - just chuck them out each day! Considering we (me and my daughter) have to wear them for sight reasons I figured we'd take our optom's advice and go the easy way with regards to contact lense use.
Lol aleshanee! That's a funny dream to have!
Great tips for those who wear the long-lasting variety of contacts though!

Softness is right, dailies are the way to go! No need to mess about with solutions etc, just take them out each day and throw them away. Then the next day just open a new set and away you go. Much cleaner and less hassle. By the way Aleshanee, I've had that dream too a few times :)

I've been wearing contacts since I was 12, one important thing that wearers should be aware of is to never wash your container with TAP WATER or to rewet your lens with tap water ever! Water contains a lot of contaminants, so use only lens solution to clean your containers, and to wet your lenses. You are also meant to rub it for a few seconds each time and to rinse with solution for a few seconds as well after the rubbing.

Wow this takes me back - I was involved in a 5-year extended wear lens trial with the CCLRU at NSW Uni almost 25 years ago. Used to wear them for non-stop 3 weeks and then have a week off. I can remember the joy of waking up in the morning and being able to see the clock (lol) and not having to grope for things in the shower. Those were the days - unfortunately my eyes changed as a result of wearing the lenses (something about vacuoles), so after the trial I went back to wearing glasses as I didn't think any sort of a change in my eye environment was a good thing. But those dailies sound brilliant, although I kinda like my glasses 'cos they hide the bags. Thanks for the article bh, and you too gals for the tips :-)

This will come in handy if I should ever wear contacts. The idea of putting a lens into my eye kinda freaks me out! Must feel very uncomfortable, like you've constantly got something in your eye??

I wear daily lenses so I'm glad I'm not troubled with keeping them clean and overnight in solution. Still, when you don't wash your hands properly or don't use a lint-free towel, then they can be a down right nuisance and a sore to put in your eyes.
