Perk up before you get run down

Have you got one of those friends that (annoyingly) never gets sick? They work all week, go out most nights, don’t sleep on the weekend, and then by Monday morning they’re ready to do it all again?
I’ve got one like that – and finally, her partying ways have gotten the better of her.
After a few solid months of non-stop partying (following a messy break-up), my friend’s frivolous ways have finally come to a halt as she’s come down with a bad case of tonsillitis. Not the end of the world you might say? No, probably not – she’s had an entire week off work, and should normally be on the mend by now – but she’s definitely not – in fact she’s worse than ever.
She’s accumulated a mouth full of around 15 mini ulcers that are driving her absolutely bonkers! This is purely due to the fact that she is so unbelievably run-down, her body is teaching her a good lesson about how to treat it, or inevitably face the consequences.
I’ve told my dear friend, there are a few tips she can take up right now – and a few she should keep in mind the next time she fancies a few weeks of non-stop partying…
Right now:
- Rest. Your body needs a break. It’s important to let your batteries recharge and your body recoup.
- Get some zinc into you! Whether it be oysters, lamb or peanuts, ulcers often mean your body needs some zinc, stat!
- SM-33 Gel. This gel is well known for its ability to numb any irritation you may get from these nasties.
In the future:
- Get your eight hours every night – and if you do happen to get less (say, on a Saturday night) don’t make a habit of doing it two or three nights in a row, or your body will punish you for it.
- Drink plenty of water. It seems obvious, but it can seriously affect the way you feel the next day if you have a late night out!
- Take time out to relax. It doesn’t have to always be go, go, go. If you skip a dinner with a friend one night because you’re exhausted, they’ll understand – there’s always next week!
- Don’t let yourself get stressed. If you find yourself becoming stressed out, or grinding your teeth, do something nice for yourself, like a facial or a massage, to avoid becoming worn out and seriously ill.

How do you avoid becoming sick and run-down?

Gee if I knew the answer to that I would be gifted, lol. Unfortunately my kids go to daycare and are always catching something or other, that normally means if they get it I will get to share it too, LOL ;)

I just try not to be around sick people, no matter how badly I want to socialise. My daughter goes to day care and they have really strict policies about sick kids there, which I'm happy about so she never gets anything from there. I'm a SAHM so if it's easier for me to avoid people in general :)

I'm around sick people nearly every day, so it's unavoidable for me. One of my little girls goes to day care and she still gets sick, my other little girl is a preppie and she has never missed a school day this year. It's all to do with immunity, some people are lucky and some people aren't.

Having kids means getting every virus out there but i find eating a good diet helps to prevent these i also like to have my vitamin C especially in winter and when i feel a runny nose or itchy throat coming on i pull out the old peppermint tea and have it with a squeeze of lemon and a drop of honey!

They are perfect tips and that SM33 Gel is a staple on my dresser amongst my bits and pieces - often not just always for me either! Excellent reminder to take some time-out for oneself too and plan that next holiday/mini-break.

A tip that I am trying to use every day is to pace myself. Unless there is something urgent to attend to, there is no need to rush and do things in the shortest period of time. I find that pacing myself helps to reduce my stress levels. I usually get sick when I am very stressed so time out, deep breathing and a little meditation helps in addition to your tips of sleep, and drinking plenty of water. A good multivitamin pill each day is also very helpful.

My daughter has just developed a cold so the whole family are loading up on vitamin c, drinking plenty of fluids and taking some time out. I might have to add some garlic and lemon to my cooking. During winter we generally take a cold and flu supplement with zinc, olive leaf extract, vitamin c or echinacea.

I am hopeless at avoiding stress. When I'm stressed it doesn't even cross my mind to try not to be. At for getting sick.. my little brother is in primary school so he tends to bring home bugs and give them to everyone else.. I take Zinc and Iron tablets everyday and drink a lot of water and health wise I tend to do the right thing. I get at least 9 hours sleep a night because I find I can't function on anything less. So I think I prepare my body well to fight coughs and colds.

I usually take an Iron supplement when I am feeling flat and run down. If I start to lack energy and feeling really weak if I leave it and dont take some iron, I can then be very prone to catching a bug or two or colds which isnt pleasant. So some iron goes a long way to ensuring my body has the energy I need to help ward off any nasties.

I think I am just lucky to have a really good immune system. I don't do anything special, but generally tend to be able to escape most flu's and colds.

Very sound advice there. Nothing beats sleeping 10+ hrs for me when I'm run down.
I also feel that a good body massage makes me feel alot more relaxed and less tense and stressed out as well.
When I'm sick I love chicken soups and drinking lots of fresh juices. It must be helping too as I tend to recover faster.

Actually, I'm sick and run down right now! Ok enough of this feeling sorry for myself...Olivia's tips are basically what I've been following but I've also been drinking plenty of lemon and honey drink (juice of half a lemon, 2 tsp honey in a cup and add hot water. I add a little cold water to cool it down a bit too). This is awful but seems to help - I've been chomping on a clove of garlic before bed and washing it down with a glass of water. I also make sure I have at least one kiwi fruit a day - it's packed with vitamin C and other good things for colds. A Centrum multi-vitamin is usually my key to staying well though even that can't combat lack of sleep and a bad diet.

I seem to have a super immune system and rarely get a cold (about every 18 months-2 years). I can't explain it...guess I'm just lucky. I even worked in a hospital for 4 years and only got 2 colds whilst working there.

I do know that I need to get more sleep though. Trying to cram everything in and sacrificing sleep to get things done, has caught up with me, so I really have noone but myself to blame

Yes, I think some of us naturally have a stronger immune system than others, but I think that those with a low immune system can build theirs up really successfully with diet and lifestyle changes. I personally swear by olive leaf extract, vitamin c and echinacea. Probiotic suppliments are of huge benefit too:)

Lol, normally its too late… However I make sure I take my multi-vitamins daily, but if I know bugs are going around the office I dose up and extras recommended by my naturopath silica, zinc, vitamin E, CoQ10 and a funglin . I keep hand sanitiser at my desk, I disinfect my shared phone regularly. I make sure I keep doing a little exercise to keep my endorphins flowing, I try and eat healthy = more fruit and vegies. And try and avoid infected people, however hard that may be…. Great topic Olivia, thanks for the tips xox

Great advice Olivia! Some one dear to me recommends that you eat crushed garlic mixed with honey on a spoon! If you have a cold/flu chicken noodle soup is also a great way to help fight it and feel better. My sister is recovering from a cold, Princess Perfume hope you feel better soon :)

oops wrong article!
ahhh I'm sick now. I have a seriously bad cough and sore throat from passively smoking in China. It sucks so much because I have my yearly exams now, nearly had a coughing fit in the middle of my English exam...
I try to avoid it by taking medicine when I feel the sickness coming, works 90% of the time.

Im phobic when it comes to germs and bacteria! So I start with the basics like washing your hands etc. Im lacking sleep right now and only got 4 hrs of sleep lol so tonight il sleep early (since my exam is over!)
I eat plenty of fruits and asian veggies when im sick and it helps or my mind is as the best defence is your immune system!
