Treating a fungi nail infection

If looking at your natural nails during a salon visit is evoking feelings of horror underscored by your own internal theme music from Psycho, then chances are you have a nail fungus.
Often resulting in significant discolouration in the nail bed, a dark yellowing coming from underneath the nail and sometimes a brownish spot, nail funguses left untreated can result in permanent damage to the nail – and in extreme cases require complete removal of the nail by a doctor. If you’re a bit attached to your nails (and we’ll guess it that you are) then follow these easy steps to give that fungus the flick:

Tips to get rid of nail fungus

•    Air the nail. It may not be the prettiest thing but covering it back up with an acrylic nail will always make it worse. It needs air to die.
•    Ask your pharmacist for an over the counter nail fungus treatment and enquire about what’s best for you – there are ointments which work under the nails and others that work on top of them – you may need a combination of both if it’s severe.
•    Be vigilant. Apply the ointment morning and night every day and you should notice results within a couple of weeks. Be patient though and keep at it – a moderate to severe fungus can take up to three months to disappear entirely.
