Spoilt by Sally

We’ve been really spoilt by Sally Hansen the last couple of weeks. Not only have we had their technicians come and treat us all to desk-side manicures (life sure is tough, but someone’s gotta do it, right?), but we’re also lucky enough to have Dana Caruso, Sally Hansen’s Global Beauty Expert, on hand (pardon the pun) to answer all our nail questions.
In fact, she’s in town all the way from the US right now and, as we speak, Liv and Carli are on their way to interview her! We’ve trawled through the forums and through your ‘ask us’ emails and have pulled out a few of your most frequently asked questions – so stay tuned for her interview as she’ll be answering questions such as….
- What are the signs of a healthy/unhealthy nail?
- Is wearing nail polish all the time bad for your nails??
- What is the best way to prolong your nail colour?
…Just to mention a few!
And while we’re on the topic of Sally Hansen, after reading the reviews for the Sally Hansen 14-Day Nail Shields, I decided I had to put them to the test myself.
My fingers are quite small, so I was pre-prepared with a pair of nail scissors to cut some of the strips down to size. I found that if I took the time to do that before I began, when it finally came to applying the strips it was way easier. Another tip is to start at the very base of your nail, pushing out any air bubbles (they’ll only cause creases) as you smooth the strip towards the tip of your nail.
Personally, I prefer a bit of colour on my nails, but hey, since they’re already hard at work nourishing my nails, I might just leave them on and pop a bright colour over the top!

My question is: I used to pick my nails for years and years and now that I managed to grow them they sort of grow in the upward direction instead of down like all the normal people... Is there a way to change that?? maybe file them or buff differently?

How bad are gel/acrylicsfor your nails?
Once you have them removed what is the best way to repair the nails?

1. What is the best way to keep your nails healthy and white? How do you remove the yellow stains on it.
2. My pink bits on the nail is rather small, it doesn't look nice as the picture. How can we extend it to give it a better overall look.

I love those Sally Hansen Nail Shields! I did exactly as you mention above by "starting at the very base" Deb and it worked perfectly for me. I didn't trim them at all even though they were oversized for my nail - I just found that the excess 'tore' away gently as I put a little pressure on my nail part as the shield bonded with my nail - if that makes any sense! : ) I loved the neutral colour I received because it went with everything I wore so it made things really easy while I was away! They were just brilliant for me : ) Thankyou again Beautyheaven!
P.S. When I finally removed them on around the 17th day I found my nails were so healthy compared to when I'd first put them on a good two weeks earlier! Yay! And they're still looking good because of the special treatment my nails received while I wore them.

What causes ridges on nails? What do they mean health wise and what can we do to cover them up?

I have a line in the middle of my right thumb nail and when I grow my nails there is always a tiny chunk on the nail and if i go to pick up something using the thumb, it makes that tiny crack worse and splits the nail in half. I always have to try and file it out and always wear a nail hardener on that thumb.

My nails are always getting caught and breaking, right between where the side edge of where the nail hangs and where the nail is attached to the skin (if that makes sense). I would like to know why this happens and how I can stop it or minimise it, a part from never using my hands again :P

wow you ladies at BH sure have a hard job ;) talk about a dream job! My question would be ... What is the best way to grow stronger nails that dont break so easily! My nails always split and break when they get a few millimetres of white to them its horrible and nothing i have done prevents this, so any tips would be great!

My biggest dilemma is peeling nails, I have tried every nail strengthener under the sun only to be told recently that these hardeners contain too many harsh ingredients that dry out your nails which then in turn causes them to peel more. I have been pointed in the direction of trying Protein formulas for my nails, would this be the best option?? I really would like to hear a few opinions on this problem of mine :)

I'm curious as to why my nails break more after using a hand cream vs not using a handcream. I seem to have the same problem if I use cuticle cream or work on my cuticles my nails end up worse instead of better. It seems if I neglect them they break less? Is the hand cream and cuticle cream/oil softening them to much perhaps?

hmmm... how do my nails recover from say after months of using acrylic fake nails?
I am currently off those nails(done by manicurist, not the ones with DIY glue on...) and just resting my natural nails, but they seem to break at just slightest bump. and they tear and as a result i had to cut them reaaaallll short whenever they break. :(. I want them to recover again and be stronger. HEEELLLPPPP!!!!

I too have nail ridges, and so does my husband. We wonder if it is something we are eating, using, doing, etc., as we both have them. Have had for quite a while, and both had blood tests, and doctor can't find anything to explain them. We have both taken Blackmores Skin, Nails, and Hair formula, and my husband is now trying Blackmores Celloids Professional, but hasn't noticed too much difference yet.
