OMG. You've torn a nail...

Lindsay protects her broken nail with Winnie the Pooh
Some girls get them in a catfight with Ashley Simpson. Others while clawing for the last frock on the sales rack. We get them while tapping furiously away at our keyboards. Split happens to everyone - and while a cracked nail isn't the end of the world, it does take the shine right off your glam (and leave you looking decidedly Britney-Spears-at-the-end-of-a-big-night). Here's how to rescue your mani, and your self-respect, in an emergency:
1. Gently smooth any jagged edges and snags with an emery board.
2. Use an orangewood (cuticle) stick to apply little dots of nail glue (try Manicare Brush On Nail Glue) directly onto the break. Gently lift the nail at the break, allowing the adhesive to 'grab' both sides.
3. Press the seams of the tear together and hold for a few seconds. Then add another dab of the nail adhesive to the surface of your nail and allow it to set.
4. Carefully stroke against the grain of your nail with an emery board to ensure a smooth, even surface and to remove any excess glue.
5. Wash and dry your nail before painting a coat of super strong base coat (try Jessica Unbreakable) underneath and over the top of your nail.
6. Now tear off two small pieces of the fibre from a tea bag. Using your orangewood stick, apply a tiny bit of nail glue to one piece of fibre and patch it over the break. Repeat underneath your nail with the second piece of fibre.
7. Be sure that the surface of the paper is smooth, both over and under your nail.
8. Apply another lick of base coat to the top and bottom sides of the nail.
9. Disguise your handiwork with two coats of your favourite nail varnish (Lindsay here is wearing Fedora from Creative Nail Design's new The Look collection).
10. Complete the illusion of talon perfection with a strong, glossy topcoat like Qtica Extending Top Coat.
Phew. Crisis averted.

I can't stand torn, uneven nails. I have to trim all my nails and sallow them to grow. I love using an emery board to shape and smooth out my nails.

Doesn't the tea bag fibres get kind of... lumpy? I agree, short nails are the way to go. NEVER have to deal with this.

That is a lot of work! Luckily my mum is a nail tech, so she can fix my splits for me!

Wow, thats complicated. my quick tip is cut your nails before then get to long. Cut them a few weeks (depending on how fast your nails grow) before an event you want lovely, long nails for.
Princess Pink: Your so lucky, my mum can do nice smooth nails, but i wouldn't say shes a nail tech.

this is actually a pretty good guide to the care, the key thing is using something paper type with fibres in it to hold. id never really file tho over the glued break so soon.
tea bag is intersting. i alwasys used to use toilet paper when i was younger, but same idea . but in thr last 3 yrs ive grown my nails non stop and only havd 1 small breakage.
more time of growing nails lets them become harder anyway.

I do this technique all the time - to be honest I thought I had come up with it myself lol. To all of you saying it sounds like hard work, it isn't, it takes about 30 seconds, and then another 10 or so once the glue dries if you leave out the teabag step which isn't necessary. I keep my nails short but I like them to look absolutely perfect, and every once in a while even short ones can snag or rip.

Another technique is to adhere a tea bag paper to your nail with nail glue or clear nail polish. It will help to reinforce the nail break and hold it together while it is growing out. :) Give it a try!

If it's a close break just chuck a bandaid on until it grows out a bit.

Great idea.. But who has the time to do ALL that for a nail? I love my nails and nearly cry each time I break one (which is often) but with kiddies there's no time to sit there and do that for a nail.

My nails break all the time due to weak nails and this idea does sound good but like most women on here with a baby it just isn't something I have time to do.

When I tear a nail I usually just tear it off then file it back and wait for it to grow. It always seems to happen more on my right hand than my left hand since I use it more. As much as I probably should do what's mentioned here i'm just too lazy sometimes :P As long as I keep my nails nice and polished it doesn't bother me too much though.
