Dramaticnoir nails might look chic, but shabby old stains definitely do not. If dark lacquer has already done you damage, squeeze some lemon juice into a bowl of warm water for a whitening, stain-removing soak. Better yet, to prevent polish penetrating your nail in the first place, always apply a basecoat first.

I always use a strengthening base coat on my nails as they are prone to peeling etc, so anything to protect my nails further is great in my books!

It really bugs me when I can't remove all my nail polish and there's still a bit left around my nails. I'll definitely be trying lemon juice trick next time. Thanks BH!

Base coats are definatly a good idea when using dark polishes. It is amazing just how much the nail can get stained.

I never wore base coats when I was a teen back in the 90's! I've learnt my lesson now though! I always apply base coat nowadays!

Good tip. A little soak in lemon water sounds refreshing too. I generally found a good clear nail lacquer, which usually was a base coat or top coat, like Maybelline Salon Finish, to use for both. I hope that was OK - didn't seem detrimental to my nails.

I learnt my lesson with base coats. After those yucky yellowed stained nails I always use my sally hansen hard as nails base coat. I also like to give my nails a day or two without polish every now and then, let them breath freely.

I always wear basecoat but it can't prevent 100% of stains. What works for me is buffing my nails occasionally to remove the stains.

I always use Cutex Diamond Extra Hard as a base coat. Great idea with the lemon juice.
