How-to: the Carrie Bradshaw bun
30 Oct 2011 05:00 AM | Posted by bh'sOlivia
We love this 'Big City' bun..

Whether you’re a Sex and the City devotee, or simply in the market for a brand spanking new hair ‘do for summer, odds are you’re well acquainted with the infamous ‘ballerina’, or ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ bun.
It’s a BIG deal right now. All puns intended. Seriously, this thing is mammoth, and for far too long now people have been going out of their minds trying to figure out how to recreate such a larger-than-life look with their limpish locks that just won’t go the distance.
If you want to know how simple it is to achieve this superbly summer style, watch the video above and be prepared to get Carried away…
Tips to keep in mind when attempting the look:
- - When purchasing a donut, try to find one as close to your natural hair colour as possible. This will solve any embarrassment if your shape and tuck technique isn’t perfect.
- - Don’t forget to place your pony at the crown of your head – the higher the better!
- - Ensure you shape your hair loosely to the shape of the donut – and continue the motion the whole way around, trying to distribute the hair and cover the donut easily.
- - For a sleek, chic look, use a spray gel to ensure all flyaways and shorter strands lay down flat against your head.
Stockist: Dress Me Up Hair Donut, from $10.95, www.datelinecity.com or 1800 251 215

Would you do the donut? What's the best hair innovation you have come across?

Liv, I loved that, you are so funny! My hair dresser uses these alot when I have upstyles done but have never thought to get me one - and now I definitely am, that looks so awesome. The best innovation I have come across - love to do half up, half down styles, and so I have "Bumpits" to give me height, they are awesome plastic, curved self-gripping, leave in hidden inserts that create perfect volume everytime. There are a few different sizes so you can do a Rockstar or a classic or a "Snookie" (for Halloween of course)! Thanks Liv.

Wow Liv - super simple (great instructional video by the way), and a bargain price. Makes me wish I had long hair. Giant hair slide clips have made a huge difference to blow drying & styling my hair, love that they come in bright colours too, can't live without 'em...

Looks great, I'd definitely give it a go! I think it'd take me a fair bit of practice, especially since I have a fair few layers in my hair

No, I wouldn't do the donut - I don't really like buns. They always make people look like they're on their way to yoga or something.

My hair's a bit short for that now and I've always found buns make the angles in my face a bit too severe but I may still give it a go one day just for fun when my hair's a little longer.

Love the video. Love the look but would not wear it myself. Probably the best hair innovation I can think off would be Hair extensions. When professionally done they look so good and can change a persons over all look so much.

I don't need to do the dounut, my hair is already very thick, wavy and long. All I need to do is wrap my pony around a few times to make a bun, pin, and then spray with a little hairspray. I don't think you need one if you got long hair.

I've seen this done before, but done with a sock instead. You get an old sock (a clean one of course) and then you cut the end (where your toes go) off and then you roll it into a donut shape. I've tried it, and it worked quite well, although my hair is too long so I ended up looking like I had a balloon on my head.

I do my buns with a spin pin my Mum sent me and my Cousin from the states. They work really well and are super easy to use. I think Diva are going to make them shortly.

I wouldn't do the donut. I love the innovation of the butterfly clip. You can glam it up or go for the casual look.......###Sandra
