Dear Desperately Seeking Volume

Bh recently received your plea for surgical detachment from your teasing comb. "I have medium to long hair which is thin, though there's lots of it. I have real trouble getting body into it and, unless I backcomb the roots, it just tends to sit flat," you said. "How can I boost my body without backcombing? Is there a product I need? Or am I just blow-drying all wrong?"
Thing is, we didn't quite catch your name. But never mind. The experts have answers anyway.
For all oomph-seekers anonymous…
Bet you already know to flip your head forward and blast your roots from beneath, but Anthony Mascolo of Toni and Guy fame once told me raising roots begins before blow-drying. "If you start styling too early, with your wet hair combed flat onto your head, your hair will just stay flat," he explained. "You need to towel it off, get your hands in there and get some natural movement going before you do anything else." Anthony's move injects extra vitality into your blow-out and also stops locks air-drying so limply.
Celebrity hairstylist (and hair make-over genius) Brad Ngata instructs that your cut also counts. In many cases, the longer the length, the more weight the roots need to support and the flatter the natural fall will be. So perhaps talk trimming a little length with your hairdresser.
The last words of advice I'll leave to Australian Hairdresser of the Year Caterina DiBiase: "I strongly recommend applying L'Oreal Professionnel Tecni.art Volume Lift to damp hair at the scalp. Another good trick is to lightly spray your roots with L'Oreal Professionnel Tecni.art Air Fix after blow-drying to keep hair light and 'airy'. Then, if you have time, pop in some easy velcro rollers for five minutes and finish with Air Fix for all day hold. It really works!"
With love & lipstick,

Great advice, I find my hair is flatter when there is no colour in it, a few highlights and I get a bit more volume - I LOVE big hair!!!

That's an interesting comment, Glitter Girl. I've got quite oily and fine hair myself and wonder-colourist Belinda Jeffrey once advised me that lightening the hair (as with highlights) can help boost roots as lighter, more porous hair absorbs sebum better. The science behind the sexy...

I let my roots grow out about 4-5cm, and couldn't work out why my hair wasn't holding any hight - even with a can of hairspray! Went and got some highlights and a tint - voila - sky high locks once again! I was trying to get back to my natural colour but got sick of limp hair...

You are so right Glitter Girl. I regularly get half a head of foils and this has definately given my hair extra volume and body as the hair has swelled from colouring (not that I need it as my hair is quite thick naturally).

I love big hair too, its so sexy. When I colour my hair blonde, for some reason it goes really curly..when dryed naturally. Then I add product for extra lift and it helps my curls so they dont go frizzy, for that beach blonde look. (texturising spray)

I did the same thing as Glitter Girl trying to grow my color out naturally, but I won't do it if its going to make my hair limp.

Don't worry Kat1, growing your colour out won't necessarily make your hair limp. Maybe you should just grow it out as you planned and see how you go - plus there are ways you can manage limpness anyway (like a new shampoo or the tips above).

My hair is quite long, which I love, but it does sit flat and limp at the top. I do blow dry my hair with my head flipped forward but I find by the end of the day my hair is flat anyway. Going to give these tips a try. Thanks BH.

I also had lank flat hair that not even an 80's perm would it hold... but since I have been bottle-blonde I have loads of hold and volume... oh, and once my hair was sooooo dead-straight, but since bleaching it actually has a slight wave which if I work it and let it dry naturally, it's very 'beach' hair...

Jess84, I also have quite long hair but I have some long layers which are quite undetectable (it 'appears' to be all one length) thru the back which gives my hair that look of being back-combed - not sure what my hair-guy does, but I 'spose a good stylist just knows how to work with different hair types to give the right cut to reduce at home styling and technique know how...

Any tips are great for me. Flat straight and very thin hair. No matter what I do it always ends up looking the same.

Get a ceramic round barrel brush and lift as you blow dry. That is how I get volume into my limp hair. Works every time.

melmeko, my hair WAS exactly the same as yours! I have very fine hair, but bleaching it has certainly given it a lot of oomph! if full bleach is not your thing (I'm always told my hair colour looks very natural though), try highlights and very subtle layering... a good stylist should be able to help if you communicate your desires... I find some stylists are just better than others at interpreting...
