This summer you need: Global Keratin treatment

It’s the hottest innovation in strand styling, it’s atop the head of many a silky-haired celebrity, and it’s your ticket to sleek, frizz-free locks this summer. What is it? It’s Global Keratin, and no doubt it’s available in a salon near you! I shimmied over to Sydney’s fabulous Oscar Oscar Salon and got the goss on this ground-breaking mane treatment…
What is Global Keratin?
It’s a hair treatment developed in Brazil that has taken the world by storm. The treatment utilises naturally occurring protein within your hair (also known as keratin), to create healthy, smooth and silky hair.
How does it work?
The stylist starts by applying the keratin to your whole head (it looks like a normal creamy treatment), and then ‘seals’ it into your hair by a hot iron over your whole head, piece by piece. This traps the moisture deep inside the hair follicle, keeping it silky for up to four months! The entire process can take anywhere from two and a half, to four hours to complete. This is dependant on the length and thickness of your hair. My own mane took about three hours from start to finish.
When can I wash it out?
Ah, here’s the clincher. You can’t wash your mop for three days after application. You also can’t create any dents or waves during those initial few days, which means it’s not recommended that you tie your hair up or bobby pin it (except of course when showering). This can be slightly annoying – especially if it gets hot, or you happen to be a big tucks-hair-behind-the-ears girl (just like me). But the results are definitely worth it if you’re after a fuss-free wash-and-go style throughout summer.
Won’t it go back to normal when I wash it?
Nope! Because the treatment is ‘sealed’ in to the hair follicle, it will actually last for up to four months. This means you can swim, sweat and shower and your hair will remain in the same condition – provided you take care of your hair as per your hairdresser’s instructions. For example, swimming in the ocean isn’t recommended too often, as the sodium found in the water will work to break down the treatment faster. This is also the reason you should use a Global Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner. As they’re sodium-free, they assist in helping the treatment last longer.
How much does it cost?
The treatment starts from $350, depending on the length and thickness of your hair – not a cheap purchase, but I can’t tell you how much grooming time I’ve saved. I always wanted to be a wash-and-go kind of girl!

The pay off for cutting my hair short is that i HAVE to straighten it every morning. no way around it. I would love a keratin treatment because with my sweaty hands, it's a bit of a nightmare trying to keep my hair dry while straightening, and I tend to undo my hard work. Shame I have no cash until like june next year!

I have been contemplating this treatment for MONTHS. my hair is so broken & brittle from years of bleaching abuse. EEP! Have tried sswitchging to foils in the hope my hair will grow & get stronger but if not I think I may just have to suck it up & pay the price for the treatment!

Frizz doesn't bother me too badly. My hair changing hues during summer due to the sun, sea & pool is what bothers me.

I have heard about this treatment in the US and am delighted to find out more through BH. I have curly hair which I like curly or straight but the big problem in summer is the frizz especially when it is humid and rains. I have tried so many products over the years to keep frizz under control - would love a permanent or semi-permanent solution.

Sounds like a beneficial treatment for my hair. But….it might cost me a bomb as my hair's super thick!

My hair is curly and kinda long, and I like A LOT of volume. So I guess this isn't for me then? Not to mention it's so expensive... Really nice for people that have straight hair and money though :))

Hi southcoastclare,
no, it's definitely not just for people with curly hair! My hair is kind of kinky, but definitely needs to be preened before i go out. This treatment allowed me to 'wash and go' - something i'd never been able to do before! Obviously people with poker straight hair wouldn't benefit as much as people with a curly mane - but it does provide a super healthy treatment and sheen to your hair, which even the naturally straight locked beauties would benefit from!

this sounds very similar to the Japanese Shiseido straightening system - are there any differences?

Eeek, I can't even afford a haircut much less a treatment worth this much, I am sure it would be awesome and amazing though, however I will be always wondering as this is never going to happen for me, lol.

My Mum has offer to pay for this treatment as a Birthday gift. I'm trying to find somewhere on the South Coast that does it. No where here in Ulladulla, but if any one knows, I'd love to know! Willing to travel to Wollongong if I have to.!

I actually had this treatment done about 2months ago! I have alot of hair, although it isn't 'curly', its very boofy and waving and kinda goes in any direction it wants, lots of volume! I also bleach my hair and was in the habit of straightening everyday so i often had breakage and frizz. I thought this would be great for my hair! I have to say i am a tad dissapointed with it though. After all the hassle i went through to get it done, (3 days with greasy dead straight hair you can't even put behind your ears is horrible!) not to mention the $$$ you dish out for it! I found i still had to blow dry it each day and although it blow dried straight, after a couple of weeks i had to run my straightener over it to keep it that way all day! I also found alot of frizz after a couple of weeks and originally thought they had broken my hair with all the rough straightening they had done during the treatement, but my regular hairdresser said it was more likely new hair growing through, but its definately more fuzz than i used to have! It did shave alot of time off my usual morning beauty prep for the first month, and its still working pretty well, i think i just had very high expectations and imagined maintanence free hair (is that really too much to ask!?). Overall i think if you can afford it and you really do need a break from your unruly hair, like me, its worth a try as everybodies hair is different and if it worked on my hair for a while, its bound to work on anyones!!

I've tried this at home, bought the formula off eBay. The formula smells really bad but it did make my hair beautiful My only problem with it is that it took so long and the effect didnt last too long for me. So I think its best that you go to a hair salon to do it. Remember to use no SLS shampoo too to preserve the effects.
