Truths to live by

Of all the words ever breathed about beauty, I've always held a few quotes close to my heart. I love Joan Kerr's quip "I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin-deep. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas?" and while coveting clothes on the catwalk with my Mac and a tub of Häagen-Dazs in my lap, I take perspective from Mae West: "I'm no model lady. A model's just an imitation of the real thing." Then, naturally, there's Coco Chanel and "a woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future". Inspirational.
But one of the most salient comes from queen of the silver screen, Joan Crawford: "I think the most important thing a woman can have - next to talent, of course - is her hairdresser."
You just have to find the right one.
Proof: my friend Lily (her name has been changed for reasons about to become painfully apparent). Lily was recently on holiday and, with a few hours up her sleeve and some split ends to sort, she strolled through the door of a small salon and sat straight down in the comfy chair. The hairdresser nodded sagely as Lily outlined the exact lengths she wanted for her layered locks so Lily settled in with a cup of tea and an old mag for her “trim”.
And now Lily has a mullet. And at least six weeks until she can be seen in public without a slouchy knit cap.
How did Billy Ray Cyrus-style disaster strike? Silly Lily (bless her!) skipped the three simple steps that guarantee a great cut. Hairdressing guru Trevor Sorbie once taught me how to find a fabulous hairdresser wherever you are and it’s helped me survive snips from Turkey to the Swiss Alps…
1. Choose a stylish salon – It doesn't have to be the most exclusive spot in the city, but a stylist should have style – and substance. "If someone's had the same sun-bleached picture in the window for the last ten years, they're not a serious hairdresser," warned Sorbie. "That person's just doing it as a job – it's not their passion."
2. The consultation is crucial – Never to be glossed over, especially in a new salon, the pre-cut consult isn’t about you talking and them nodding; it's about forming understanding and trust. "You should feel comfortable asking questions and talking about ideas... And you should feel confident about the answers," Sorbie said.
3. Prepare to invest – "You get what you pay for," he reasoned. "[The cut is] the most important thing about your hair, so you shouldn't be afraid to go for it." On a budget? Try redirecting the cash you'd planned to spend on your wardrobe, dessert or coffee for the next few weeks. After all, your hair 'do's the accessory you really will wear every day and probably the most worth saving for.
Plus, think of what you'll save on slouchy knit caps.

Welcome back Tracey - I hope you had a lovely break.
I accidently booked in with the wrong hairdresser at my usual salon and ended up with an almost mullet - not happy! I am still growing it out...Now I always confirm who exactly is doing my hair.

Hi Tracey, i hope you had a fabulous break.
Your poor friend, i know exactly how she feels. fortunately for me this has not happened for a very long time. i was made to look like a cross between Billy Ray and Tiny Tim, shudder.

I just have the best hairdresser - shes young - but she really knows how to satisfy her customer - she listens attentively and does exactly as her clients request - It just the best atmosphere, music not to loud, always nibblies, tea, water & biscuits, great up to date mags to read - really makes you feel welcome.
She never cuts more than you want off - I don't think I'll ever go to another hairdresser even in an emergency - its just not worth the risk!
Welcome back... I hope your feeling refreshed and ready for more beauty articles for all of us to enjoy as per usual.

Thanks lovelies. It's good to be back. Haha! Sharna2, I've just realised how much it sounds like a case of the my *cough* friend has a mullet... But the subterfuge is necessary. If I outed the real Lily, everyone would know and her sizeable investment in hats would be wasted!

After a certain point I promise I won't let my fiance trim my split ends. He does it because I have yet to find someone who does what I want! I'm looking forward to the up-coming salon info on BH.

I love Coco Chanel's quote! Mine would be "Every girl should love beauty products!". I think in terms of choosing a salon those three points are crucial in getting the perfect style particularly "Prepare to Invest". I've tried the cheaper alternatives in the past and then had to fork out more money as I wasn't happy with the results.

These quotes are fantastic!! Also important about hair cuts i think is to not let a hair dresser push you into something that they want and you dont!

that's true! i don't like the hairdressers who think they know what you want and give their version of what you want. i've yet to find such a hairdresser. i'm overdue for a haicut and im scared to go back to the same airdresser in fear of i might get a cranky hairdreser who is supposed to be on her break!

Tracey, was that only 1 week off!?!? It's great to have you back and we've really missed you, but I think you deserve a longer break... :) I love the Mae West quote, I think it is so fitting in this model and celebrity obsessed era we live in!

I have a great hairdresser that I know I can trust - I'm very fussy about who touches my hair!! I haven't had any bad hair cuts or colours for years. Welcome back Tracey! :)

Those quotes were great. After a long, hard and frustrating search I finally found a fantastic hairdresser. It is pricey but they have solved all my hair problems - it's worth it.

My worst disaster was letting a friend attack my waist length hair and ended up with a bob. I was not impressed and learned a valuable lesson.

I have had expensive cuts in very stylish salons and they've been a nightmare. Then I've had great cuts at the hairhouse warehouse (somthing I honestly wasn't expecting). If I had awful split ends and couldn't get to my favourite hairdresser I would get a trim somewhere affordable but if I wasn't getting a good vibe from the hairdresser I'd watch closely and ask that my layers be left alone.

This is exactly why I have follows my hairdresser all over the city,. I now travel an hour each way to see her. A good hairdresser is worth the effort! Hair makes SUCH an impression.

I honestly don't understand the fuss people make about their hair sometimes. I mean feeling good is important, but you can get amazing cuts at cheap prices...it's not that hard to find!

i think we have all had our bad haircuts from hairdressers in the past. there are places where hairdressers do an amazing job and care about you at cheap prices. it gets a bit costly to pay a high price for hair when it grows out super fast!

Poor Lily! I'd never be brave enough to go to a salon I hadn't been to before or that hadn't been recommended to me. I'm so careful with my hair, it's so difficult to find a good hairdresser. Everytime I've found a good hairdresser they've gone off to have babies. Thankfully now I have a male hairdresser, so there's no risk of him getting pregnant :)
