Is clay the answer to bouncy hair?

Is clay the answer to bouncy hair?

It sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it? Putting mud in your hair seems like it would end in a dried-out disaster, but in fact, it’s as beneficial for your mane as it is for your face and body.

And while there are a ton of clay products you can use to style your mane (see below), using clay as a hair treatment is a hot trend among beauty addicts.

As it turns out, clay masks are great for absorbing oil and excess minerals (such as copper) found in tap water that have damaging effects on your hair. Plus, they deposit conditioning minerals into your locks to give them more volume and bounce. They work particularly well for curly-haired girls and those whose scalps are prone to oiliness.

Here’s how to make your own clay mask at home.

Clay mask recipe

Ingredients:
¼ cup bentonite or rhassoul clay (found at health food stores)
240mL  aloe vera juice – high in moisturising humectants, this will condition the hair and keep it smooth
2 tbsp jojoba, olive or argan oil – rich in fatty acids, these oils penetrate the hair shaft and strengthen hair

Method:

  1. Add clay, aloe vera juice and oil to a blender and mix until smooth.
  2. Apply to clean, damp hair, working from roots to ends in small sections. Massage in to ensure even coverage. Keep a spray bottle with water nearby to spritz any sections that begin to dry.
  3. Once your hair is completely coated with the clay mask, let it sit for 5 minutes before thoroughly rinsing.
