Bad hair day

Nothing sends a girl over the edge like a bad hair day, luckily The Chop Shop’s Dan Dixon is on hand to make dodgy ‘dos a thing of the past.
How do I stop split ends from forming? – Olivia, VIC
Regular haircuts are the only foolproof way! If heat styling, always use a product that protects hair from heat intensity; blow-drying and tongs always dry hair out which causes splitting, so work on the premise that ‘what comes out must be put back in.’ A good moisture treatment will replace the dryness. Bh loves Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Daily Treatment.
I’ve been dying my hair brown for over a year now and I always end up with this red tinge to it which comes out in the sun. I’m a natural brunette but was blonde before I dyed it brown. Is that the reason for the red tinge? Or is it because of spending time in the sun? – Nadine, VIC
Colouring blonde back to brown is a process that relies on replacing the warm pigment removed by lightening. A chocolate brown is a good way to maintain that warm pigment, however if you feel that the red is too red, change to a coffee brown. This will cut down the warmth.
My scalp gets really itchy and oily if I don't wash my hair everyday, what can I do about it? I read somewhere that washing it in fact makes it oilier? – Kristy, VIC
First of all make sure that you’re using a shampoo and conditioner that’s recommended by your hairdresser, go in on an oily day and really pick their brain, this way the analysis will be best suited to your needs. Over washing does stimulate oil production but the right products can combat this.
My hair will straighten normally but the roots won’t straighten at all. I’ve used balms, treatments, everything! What can I do? – Angelica
Effective root straightening is a blow-drying job! It relies on tensing and stretching the hair cuticle. However continuous tension drying can also create breakage so remember that moisture treatments are essential. Try Botanics of Australia Silken Moisture Treatment With Banksia Flower Extract.
Every time I wash my hair I suffer hair loss, a lot of hair loss. Is it because i keep changing my shampoos? – Jasmin, NSW
Hair loss is a normal occurrence, although there are other factors than can increase loss. Diet, stress and exercise are the main ones. A healthy, balanced life is a great foundation and follow this with a salon-prescribed shampoo / conditioner combination.

What’s the best piece of hair advice you’ve ever been given?

When dying hair at home apply vaseline around your hair line and on the ears, this acts as a barrier and prevents the dye from staining your skin.

Regular brushing of hair is essential whether your hair is short or long. And keeping the ends trimmed regularly to prevent split ends.

It was from a fellow nurse colleague at the time and she just saw her hair dresser and her hair dresser told her to never completely rinse out your conditioner. Leave a little bit in your hair as it keeps the moisture in the hair and doesn't dry it out and also for the last 30 seconds at the end of your shower turn the hot water off and let cold water only go on the hair. Since I was told that many uh huh hmm some moons ago okay 17 years ago ( I am officially old ) I have heard it again. So anyway since then that is what I do but I rarely use the cold water trick. Brrrrr! Another great article Sarah!
Love Flutter.

no matter how much you love straightening your hair , give it a days rest when possible , it really does make a difference to the condiotion of the hair , no amount of product can fix it once its totally damaged , so a rest day for hair is a must

Oh Gosh! I'm in desperate need of a good cut & Colour at the moment!! I'm hanging out for Sat when I can get to the hairdressers and feel like myself again..........
Hmm, the best bit of hair advice I've been given is Do Not use Gel, it dries out your hair due to the alcohol in it, use a wax based product instead...... I've learnt this the hard way!!

Don't wash your hair too often! Ask any hairdresser and they'll tell you to only wash your hair once or twice a week. Washing it too often strips it of its natural oils and makes it oilier, and weaker due to overwashing. If your hair is super oily you need to find the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair to enable this. You'll have much healthier hair in the long run if you can manage it!

If you hair is long and you don't want messy tangled locks, loosely plait your hair and sleep on it. Let hair out in the morning and it will be tangle-free and not messed up.

I actually had buffy hair like the girls in this photo, years and years ago lol,. I do need to take a bit more care with my hair, the Silken Moisture treatment, sounds good to me, especially as i do colour my hair frequently. Flutter i too was given the same advice, to leave some condintioner in my hair, my mum told me that one.

definately not to use any styling tools without some sort of protection, not to rub hair too much when drying with a towel, just squeeze out excess moisture and let it air dry.and have product free days.and i'll definately try sleeping on a silk pillow case

brush your hair on a regular basis, as it stimulates the natural oils to give it a beautiful shine.
always use a heat protector before straightening.

My mother used to brush my hair 100 strokes when I was a kid, and I always had great hair. I don't do that anymore but I do with my kids, and they have wonderful hair The conditioner tip is an oldie but a goody.

don't wash your hair daily unless you really need to becuase you over use product in it. Don't over use products... only use them when you really need to and as small amount as possible when you do use them. Hair cut (trim) at least every 6 months (preferably 3 months) and let your hair be natural as often as possible :)

Use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle wet hair as it is more delicate and prone to breakages when wet.
