Blonde ambition

My hubby Matt went for a haircut recently and came back looking younger and, well, sexy! Now don’t get me wrong, my husband is both of those things, but there was something completely different about him. Not only did he have a new haircut, but a new colour too.
And this inspired me: I decided to stray from my customary chestnut mane and take a chance with a colour change…
Now this is a pretty huge step for me as I’ve had the same golden foils and chestnut semi for years. So to help me with my colour challenge, I chatted to the Queen of Hairdressing, Caterina DiBiase from Heading Out in Melbourne.
“Because we like a colour we tend to stick with it for years,” says Caterina, “the result is a hair colour that hasn’t changed, even though we have. Our skin-tone changes, as does our shape, and let’s face it, what looked great a few years ago is looking a little tired now! And more often than not, the colour is too dark and we need to lighten up as we get older and paler."
Thanks to Caterina, I learnt a few fantastic tips on achieving new-look locks:
- Bright blondes can be harsh on ‘less than perfect’ skin, so soften the tone and use brighter blonde to add a highlight.
- Let your eye colour and skin tone direct your new shade.
- For the last twenty years women have used blonde highlights to achieve a sun-kissed look, but for luscious, shiny and healthy tresses try a richer blonde.
- If you’re pale, darker tones of bonde look great combined with some softer shades strategically placed around the face. If you’ve always been darker and are ready for a real change, choose a new shade of blonde.
Being a typical Libran, all these hair choices have left me dizzy - spicy brunette or beautiful blonde?

Will you be opting for a colour change this winter?

I'll stay blonde thanx... it suits me the best - I just mix it up a bit with various toners, sometimes warmer, sometimes cooler... Occassionally I go and have some rich beige/caramel foils (lowlights) added to give it some texture and depth...

I have been blonde for a couple of years now, I have a more warmer shade in the winter months and a more bright and vibrant shade through summer.

i went ash blonde for the winter, and i absolutely adore it!
considering i have had black and dark brown hair all my life, it was a huuuge change.
harder to look after, but well worth it.
blondes really do have more fun!

No colour change for me...I'm staying my 'safe' blonde too...did go back to being 'dark' a couple of years ago...that was a big mistake!...I'm not going there again. It wrecked my hair, and now its taken awhile to be healthy again...just let it be....let it be...I do have to keep the maintenace up as I dislike regrowth immensely...but thats O.K...I like feeling pampered at the hairdresser...its my only time out.

I have the blonde top layers over medium brown. I love it, I do find it hard to keep up with the dark roots, though.

Haven't coloured my hair for years... I'm quite happy being a natural brunette this year. :)

I get highlights every few months and I do what glamourcat does and just slightly vary the highlights and lowlights. In summer I like to go blonder and in winter I add more chocolate brown low lights. While I was pregnant I tried to go back to my natural colour which is a very dark brown colour and I looked so washed out. I think I'll be sticky to my highlights and lowlights for sometime to come.

I've been contemplating going blonde for a while - considering I'm normally a dark browns/black kinda girl this will be a drastic change.
I tried going blond once in my teens, at home which was a baaaadddd idea. Always use a professional, that's all I can say... I'm still too traumatised to talk about it openly!

It amazing what colour can do. I would like to go the other extreme and go darker such as a chocolate brown but, I know it won't suit me. I like being blonde although I think I need a bit of a change. I will have to wait a few week for my next hairdressing appointment and take the plunge.

I've got jet black hair and recently i've been thinking of going a lovely soft light brown ..
But it all just seems a bit radical. I wouldn't mind going for an all-over dark brown, but then i'm paying lots of money for such little change!

same here MishMoshy, i've been born raven haired and thought of going brown or even full on blonde but im just too chicken, that and i don't want to ruin my hair in any way. maybe i should try henna, but dunno...

I wont be having a colour change too soon. I coloured my hair last week, a lovely cherry black. I agree though, i believe your hair colour should change with you.

At the moment I'm a light ash brown, but after reading this I'm considering adding some medium ash highlights (a bit worried about the maintenance though!).

After being blonde for the last 5 or so years, i finally went back to my more natural shade of dark brown, but added a purple shade for something different. I love it and its easy on the maintenence, but i do miss the blonde. sometimes your hair needs to change with you.

I went blonde last Christmas - wish I had not and left my hair to go gracefully gray. The blonde went greenish and I had to go darker to cover it up - never ever again.

it's tough being a Libran isn't it. all those decisions we have to make, why cant we just try them all out!! [for the one price of course]

I've gone from dark blonde to light blonde to light brown to platinum blonde to black to dark brown! All in the last 2 years.. I suppose this would put me in the category of serial hair color changer! But I think I'll be sticking to my shade of brown I have atm, it compliments my fair skin! :)

I have been colouring for over 20 years in basically the same shades - just recently I noticed that it just didn't suit me anymore because I am getting older.

I remember when I first wanted highlights in my hair, I was stressing out as to what colour I wanted and where I wanted it on my hair. I wish I could have come across this article earlier! Great tips there!

I have naturally dark ash blonde hair, but my wonderful hairdresser (who is the only person I trust with my hair) adds some lighter highlights using a unique technique.. I think my colour which combines my natural and highlights suits me well.

Ash blonde is pretty, but for me, probably sticking with my dark brown...Asians just tend to look unnatural with any colour other than dark brown/black. -wry- I envy those who can pull off either spectrum well! ^^
