I have written article and had my own FB pages, but am yet to start blogging. I have always flirted with the idea, but as yet, like you, I’m still in the planning stages

thank you all for your opinions and suggestions!! keep them coming.

I have decided to go with Blogger. I haven’t posted anything yet but I’m really happy with my blog name which i think suits really well to what content I’m planning on creating. It is called Beauty Sensibility.

do you have any tips for photography for blogs? should i edit the same as i would for instagram or is there a particular program you think is best?

I don`t have any experience with Instagram, but I personally use Pic Monkey to edit my photos & add a watermark etc. I just use the free version & do some basic edits because I`m a total noob at using editing programs. I also use it to create collages, which is fun. Here`s the site: https://www.picmonkey.com/

In terms of photography, it depends on whether you wish to capture photos in natural light (which is great, but can be difficult in terms of figuring out which time of day is best to shoot, especially this time of year) or artificial light (which you always have on hand, but could make your photos look…well…artificial!). I personally shoot in natural light because I prefer it that way, but I`m not an expert at taking photos. I do try my best though with props & the like. It`s all a learning curve really and I get inspired by fellow bloggers all the time. If you`ve already got a photography style that works, then don`t change it.

  • I think blogging is a really great thing to do, if only for yourself personally. I have been using WordPress for my blog (just the free version for now) and I have learned a lot about website creation, so that for my wedding I created an actual website on WordPress (self hosted) mainly just to play around with all of the neat tools. I highly recommend a website called WPBeginner which is very helpful when starting out if you choose to use wordpress
    http://www.wpbeginner.com/

In regard to photographs, I either take my own using the camera in my (now much outdated) Samsung Galaxy SII phone, or I use free pictures on the internet for general pics. I had a simple point and shoot camera but I lost it with a bunch of my wedding photos on it 🙁

I just went “meh” to YouTube and started concentrating on publishing via Instagram….

wow. never considered all these Lubz I do it for myself mainly.

why do you want to blog?

    • 7 yrs, 10 mths ago

Hahahahahaha….does it show that I`ve done some reading up?

I want to blog mainly as a way to coherently translate what`s in my head out there. I used to maintain a diary while growing up, and I used to enjoy writing short stories and building my vocabulary as I did so.

What I`ve found is that I`ve got a lot of ideas with regards to makeup looks and styles. That`s my passion. One of the things I wanted to do growing up was be a makeup artist. Life got in the way.

But if I can use my blog to influence and help even one person – most likely my friends and family (hopefully they will read my blog – haha!), I`m happy to do that. Plus, it would be a great way for me to track my work and the process involved. And as time progresses, I can see how much I`ve improved in my technique.

Hey Deeknight, I’m in the same boat too. I’ve only been a browser and follower of blogs, YouTube channels, etc. And I think I’m ready to start writing and maintaining a blog myself.

The first thing I did was to research everything involved with the process – starting off with “WHY do you want to blog”?

    https://www.becomingminimalist.com/15-reasons-i-think-you-should-blog/

Conversely, there are some reasonsnot to blog.

How to Start a Successful Blog in 2022

The link above also shows you the step by step process on how to start your own blog.

Mainly, the question to ask yourself “what would make me stand out from the sea of bloggers out there? (Answer: your personality and experience).

Websites like WordPress and Blogger are the most popular for newbies because they are easy to use and expand to proper websites when the need arises.

There is a lot of research out there – a quick Google search will tell you the steps to start a blog. Just be wary of some people who want to sell you stuff like systems and “processes” to start a blog. You dont need that.

You should know that blogging is a time consuming process – but if you think of it as a process you love rather than a job, you won’t feel too burdened to do it.

With regards to photography, there are key elements you need to consider: lighting, subject and background.

What is the story you are trying to convey?

I was a complete noobie when it came to taking photos. I started off with a simple point and shoot camera (the ones you can get at office works for $99) and practiced until I found a style of photography that suits me.

I now have a Nikon D90 camera that I use for special occasions and to capture memorable photos of my little one.

That said, the new smart phones have wonderful built in apps and settings that can take professional style photos without messing about too much. So, take photos – if you don’t like it, study what you don’t like about it – the background, where does the focal point lie, the lighting, etc and try again. Compare your photos and see what you can tweak until you get an output that you desire. And the best part is you can delete what you don’t like.

Apologies – I just realised I rambled on. Hope I was able to help!

      Great info Lubz.

I am very similar to you and decided earlier in the week that I was going to start blogging too. To start with I am doing it for myself, I am planning on getting a fair bit done in the blog before I launch it. Mine will be about ALOT of things – Beauty, kids, babies, travelling with kids, life, cooking etc…..

I really am just doing it for me and if anything comes of it then bonus otherwise it`s a great journal of my life.

Awesome Sharzi! I probably should have done that too – set it up before announcing to the world that I`ve registered my domain name. Lol! I was too excited and I jumped the gun. Now the pressure is on to get it done.

      • 7 yrs, 10 mths ago

I`ve got a domain name but have set the blog to private. Having two little ones (6 month old and 3yo) it`s going to take me a while before I get much done to it. I have changed my name on Instagram and will try and get more of a flow between my accounts. I`ll be going by Mumma_Sharz! 🙂

I`ve been meaning to ask you – hows your little baby? Hope she`s all better.

      • 7 yrs, 10 mths ago

Naw thanks for asking she is much better. We ended up at the hospital again on Tuesday night but she is definitely getting back to her bright and bubbly self. Here is some pics of her 🙂

Awwww… that toothless smile! Melts your heart!

Glad to hear she`s on the mend!

        Thank you.
