What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done for beauty?

Hello beauties!

I’m currently working on an article about the crazy things women do for beauty – and I’d love to include some stories from you guys, because who’s crazier about beauty than our beloved bh members?!

So it’d be amazing if you could all tell me the craziest/funniest thing you’ve done in the name of looking pretty. Here are some ideas to get you started:

*Queing up at 5:00am to get the latest from Sephora
*Sacrificing actual essentials in order to fit a hairdryer/straightener/massive make-up bag in your carryon luggage
*Bidding big bucks on ebay for a limited edition product
*Buying a really expensive beauty item you didn’t even need just for the free gift
*Experimenting with messy DIY/kitchen beauty
*Spending 2 hours doing your make-up, only to take it all off and start again (bonus points if it made you late to a big event)
*Shaving just your ankles because that’s all that was showing
*Dyeing your hair a new hue, only to dye it back again in the same week because you didn’t like it (racking up a colossal bill at the hairdresser in the process)
*Using an actual iron on your hair

A few sentences about your crazy beauty foray would be wonderful! Can’t wait to hear your stories 🙂

About 15 years ago, I mistakenly assumed my hair was more grey than brown & that consequently, the regrowth would be less noticeable if I bleached my hair blonde, rather than to continue dyeing it dark brown. Despite the instructions saying to apply bleach to the mid-lengths & ends first, wait 15 or so minutes, then apply to roots, I thought this would make my hair two-toned. I applied all the bleach to my head at once. My roots turned white, the rest was bright yellow! I had to put a cap on (with my hair tucked inside it) & go out to buy more bleach to do the mid-lengths & ends a second time to get a colour match. I also bought purple toning conditioner, great stuff!

Blonde hair did NOT suit me at all! Yet, I was shocked at how men were almost throwing themselves at me. It seems blondes do have more fun! I really dated a lot more than usual in that short time I was blonde.

The regrowth I thought was mostly grey, turned out to be much less grey than I’d thought. I had to touch up the roots much more often than when I was brunette. I couldn’t keep it up, so after only a couple of months I went back to dark brown.

The day before my sister-in-law’s wedding in New York, I dragged my husband out of the hotel, ran five blocks down the street partially through Central Park to make it to Sephora (which had closed their doors) to beg them to open up so I could buy two small tubes of Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion (one for her, one for me).

We talked our way in the doors and good thing I knew exactly where I needed to go, because I went straight to where the tubes were, and we were straight back out again!

I’ve done the dying thing – dying it, then removing the dye instantly by using baking soda and head and shoulders. Can’t do that if you go lighter though lol. Perming then straightening. Cutting fringe then pulling it back to have it grow again. Using eye makeup on my lips (very drying). Buying big sacs of expensive beeswax to make my own lipsticks and then wrecking existing good stuff and making a huge mess only to throw everything out.

When I was a teen I was obsessed with a certain lip colour and could not find it anywhere. So I decided to buy two lipstick colours, melt them on a metal spoon (junkie style) and mix them together. The two lipstick colours that were closest to that particular shade were Chanel lipsticks ($52 each!!).

After $104, one fire hazard and one messy table later the lipstick colour was terrible and the texture was also atrocious. I haven’t bought a Chanel lipstick since.

When I was younger I decided that I wanted to go a darker drown and bought a boxed dye. I trusted my sister with the job since my hair was long…worst mistake ever. She mixed the conditioner and dye together instead of the two mixing products and proceeded to put it in my hair.
After washing it out my head turned into a 1/3 black, 1/3 uncoloured, 1/3 splotchy brown mess! Luckily I had a hair cut booked in the next day but I walked in with my head hung low and pleaded for some help. I’m glad I gave the hairdressers a little chuckle, I don’t let my sister touch my hair any more though.

I was silly enough many years ago copying a friend who swore that she ironed her hair with an actual clothes iron rather than using a straightener. So we both did it one night before going out. I ironed hers and she ironed mine. Though it did look good I’m so thankful I didn’t do any permanent damage to my hair or even worse burn myself. Only did it once. Glad that I didn’t as I’m sure my hair would have all fallen out by now if I’d continued to use the iron!!

I have a few regrets with my hair – been too adventurous in those years.

i permed my hair with expectation that it would turn out to be a nice bouncy loose curls, but the end product was super tight curls like noodles! I waited for 2 days and have it straighten out.

Multi-coloured my hair – yes, that’s right, i used to have many shade of blonde to dark brown on my hair at one stage, and my natural hair colour is super dark brown/ closer to black! To achieve that result, i was at the hairdresser for 8 hours. Initially loved the look, but since my hair was bleached badly to get it to blonde and light brown so i ended up with super dried and damaged hair that felt like straws or hays!

for not so much beauty related – I use my hair straightener to do some quick ironing when i desperately needs to remove some stubborn creases on my clothes while travelling.

I wrote this on another BH article but when I was overseas my luggage was lost so I had no straightener available. I was desperate to have my hair straight so I thought the next best option would have been to use the iron. Putting my hair on an ironing board while my mom helped out felt so ridiculous.

Applying snail mucus (actual product) to my face because apparently it’s very popular in the Korean beauty culture and is known for its scar healing properties.
