Asking for free Samples

Hi everyone.

What are your opinions on asking for free samples at stores/counters when you want to try the product before buying, whether it be for makeup or skincare?
I haven’t had enough guts to try this out for myself yet. But if any of you do ask for samples, do you have any tips? in your experience, are there any stores that refuse to give you samples?

Thanks =)

    Has anyone asked for foundation samples at Mecca Cosmetics?

    I’d also like to know this, I’d love to try the NARS sheer glow

    Me too! I’ve heard so many great things about NARS sheer glow. I’ve been told it’s very similar to the Rimmel wake me up foundation but would love to see how long lasting it is.

    Good news! I went to mecca at MYER last night and got a NARS sample 🙂 The SA put it on and also gave me a small sample. After trying it on this morning I don’t think I’ll purchase it. I’ve never tried rimmel’s wake me up so I can’t compare it to that but generally it blends well and looks lovely on normal, well primed and prepped skin. Unfortunately it looks patchy on my dehydrated nose and cakey in other areas. Overall I need something that works with my skin better (especially for the price!) but I definitely recommend you grab a sample to try. For me it lasted a few hours without primer or powder

    I was pretty disappointed with the sheer glow too 🙁 it also made my flakes look worse

    But gotta admit, those mecca gals are super generous!

    I’ve never asked, but I’ve been offered samples by Mecca staff on a number of occasions for both skincare and cosmetics. They seem to be pretty good in regards to giving samples out. Give it a shot- I’ve always found them to be really generous.

    I feel as though they should have that option to try before you buy. It only makes sense. I know i’d be gutted if i spent $50 or more on a product i’d never used and was totally disappointed if i didn’t like the result/smell/texture etc. TV offers a trial period on products they sell, why not have this option in stores?

    I went to DJ’s a couple of weeks ago to the Brisbane Queens Plaza La Mer counter with a sample voucher I had for a product I wanted to try. There was no one there so I browsed for 10 mins and still no staff. So I went to one of the general counters to ask if they could help me, they said that the La Mer staff member was on their 45 min lunch break and they couldn’t help me because they didn’t know where things were kept. It was a complete waste of my time. I am surprised that such a high end skincare brand would have such poor customer service standards.

    That would be annoying! They should have at least two people at counters so even if one goes on a break there will be someone still there to help

    I know, I would have thought that would have been common sense but apparently not.

    Just wanted to add a happy story here 🙂 So today before work I stopped by the Myer MAC counter for a sample. Unfortunately only one girl was working there (it was around noon) and she was doing a makeover on someone so I decided to come back after work. 6 hours later and the same girl is there by herself and I asked if there were any samples for foundations. She kindly said they were out but that the djs counter have some. I rushed over and since there was only one lady and she was already with a customer I just wandered around the area. While floating around the SA greeted me which was nice and after finishing with the other customer asked how she could help. I told her that I was looking for a sample for the face and body and she was so nice! She picked out a shade that would suit me and applied it on my face while telling me more about the product and giving advice on applying it. She took my time with me even though it was probably around 6.45 and also gave me 2 samples pots, one with the shade I tried and one lighter. She was so patient and lovely about the whole thing and made me feel really comfortable about asking for samples. Overall a happy ending!

    Sorry about the essay!

    Wow that’s pretty awesome service! I’m always too shy to ask for samples but I’ll give it a shot after reading your experience 🙂
