Washing off sunscreen

I know that using sunscreen is important, but I really hate the greasy residue it leaves on my skin and the difficulty I have washing it off in the shower.

A couple of days ago I tried double washing with soap and shower lotion, then shaved my legs- completely blunted my razor as there was still a coating of sunscreen on my legs 🙁

Does anyone have any recommendations for washing the sunscreen off their face and their body?

You should use an exfoliating lotion with a bodyscrub! The exfoliating lotion is hard on your skin but works well to scrub off anything smooth. Alternatively if you have none you could mix in sugar or fine sand into a regular shower gel.

I just use Pamolive milk and honey body wash and an exfoliating glove and it comes right off.
Have you tried a non greasy sunscreen? Neutrogina (sp) does one I believe.

I have a great trick that you may like to try.. As sunscreen most often tends to come in quite a thick greasy base you need to cut through that, if you apply water then body wash there is a good chance the water will just film and the body wash will slide straight over the top. The trick is to apply the body wash directly over your skin (dilute with a little water in your hands if required) lather up as much as possible, then simply rinse off in the shower and this should leave your skin squeaky clean. It works by giving the lotion a chance to become a surfactant, which means it will break down the oil more effectively. Hope this helps!

If you are having a lot of trouble with the sunscreen you are using at the moment you might benefit from switching to one that is equally as protective but lightweight and non-greasy, meaning it is quickly absorbed into your skin and you barely remember that you’ve put it on!
I am a huge fan of Nivea’s sunscreen range and I find I have never had the problem’s you’ve described while using the Nivea products. For my face, I use Clinique’s Sheer/Super City Block depending on how much time I will be spending in the sun and again, I haven’t had any problems with washing it off.
If you are happy with your brands, just unhappy with how they fail to come off, for your face and neck I’d suggest using makeup remover wipes, and for your body I would recommend a loofa or exfoliating scrub or mit, which will also help get rid of ingrown hairs and dead flaky skin before you shave your legs anyway! 🙂 goodluck!

I used to have the same problem but I now use a shower puff with some body lotion on it and scrub it away. I have also seen exfoliation gloves and cloths so I presume that would work as well.
    Good Luck

The Body Shop sells exfoliating gloves which are great to use in the shower, and easy to take on holiday.

Thanks for the tips. I’m using a waterproof sunscreen and I reapply fanatically throughout the day so that’s likely the problem. I’ve got a loofah but never bring it on holiday with me- I’ll give it a go next time and see. And a body scrub as I suspect my body wash just smells pretty…

yes I have to agree with the shower puff or scrub mitt, they are great for things like this.

Also the type of body wash/soap and sunscreen that you are using really needs to be taken in to consideration. If you opt for a waterproof sunscreen and reapply during the day you really are developing a build up of the carrier cream (base that holds the active ingredients), you’re going to need something a little more hard working to move it all so a lot of sulfate free or moisturising cleansers just won’t cut it.

The way I see it (and this isn’t to everyone’s liking) a body wash should get your body clean and if it’s not doing that it’s a bit of a waste of space. If I were you I would invest first in the shower puff, see how that goes and make changes if necessary after that.

Agree with missteaadict, a body scrub then shower gel usually works.

Do you use just soap/body wash and your hands? Because I find that I never feel clean when I use those, I need a good shower puff to scrub and get it all off (I prefer the EcoTools brand ones from Priceline because they’re bigger and thicker than most others). It’s this one: http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/your-body/body-scrubs-exfoliators-peels/25428-eco-tools-bath-sponge
Alternatively you could also try using an exfoliating body wash/body scrub to help remove it.

Usually I find that body wash & my shower puff are enough to get it all off though.
