Solariums – whats your opinion?

We have all heard the tragic story about the young woman, Claire Oliver, who died from skin cancer in July this year. Her dying wish was to raise awareness to the dangers of using solariums – whom many regard as safer than sunbaking!
I want to know your stance on solarium use. Personally I have only used them about 4 times, and I will now never, ever use them again. Australia has the highest instance of skin cancer in the WORLD! so it is a very real risk, and don’t forget Claire Oliver was only 22 when she was diagnosed, she died at 26. My new motto is ‘Don’t Bake it – Fake it!’ A fake tan is the only safe tan, any real tan is a sign of skin damage.

Very dangerous don`t ever use one. Some states are now banning the use of solariums.

I will absolutely never EVER put myself at such great risks for a tan. Solariums are dangerous, and the risk of skin cancer and decreased elasticity and collagen in the skin are far too high for me to ever consider otherwise.

Oh these are so dangerous! I dont know anyone that goes to a solarium. We all know how damaging they are! Plus, fake tanning is so cheap and easy these days!

Never have, never will! Simple as that 🙂 I`m happy with my skin colour and have enough health problems to deal with let alone cancer.

I`ve never used them, and never will.
And I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but, especially considering how much knowledge we have of solariums and the dangers, I really don`t understand why people use them and so regularly.

ive never done it…ive seen them around though,
i know theres one about 50 metres from the actual beach which is silly !

a little sun exposure is fine,
theres plently of healthy surfers out there 🙂

but obviously with everything in life you have to be smart about it, and do it in moderation. or maybe not at all if it is a solarium :p

just like drink ing a bit of wine, its fine on occasion without binging and / or becoming an alco over it

Don`t like them : Don`t know why people use them, especially how they are connected the skin cancer, but their choice.
Have never used, and don`t intend to 😀

Welcome to BH Beinformed, am glad you like my pic! As you can probably tell, I love cows. It sounds like in your situation you might need the occasional turn in the solarium but then your climate is very different. This is a nice friendly forum so hope to see you around more often. 🙂

Vitamin D is certainly important and deficiency is quite common in Australia. However, moderate exposure to sunlight is the key. We do not have as much ozone protection here and we have to be much more careful than people in countries such as Canada. In summer, about 10 minutes exposure per day is enough, in winter in the southern states a few hours a week might be necessary. Just my opinion, but I don`t think solariums are ever necessary in this country and they can be dangerous!

Nice pic! We cannot produce ANY natural Vitamin D in Canada anywhere in the winter from Oct to May. I have a salon, we do skin typing, have trained staff and are very careful to tan clients slowly without burning. In Canada regulations to make sure all salons are run with care and professionally is required. The health regulators want to do a ban under 18. We are saying, it is skin typing that is more important. In 7 years we have only tanned 44 people under 18 and only 27 under 17 and that is for a short term for them to travel on vacation without burning. There is some concern I understand but I do believe in moderation. Studies of the breakdown in possible risk of skin cancer showed us that there is a much greater risk in medical uv equipment than in tanning salons even without regulations. The risk difference was as much as 37% higher. We do not have your wonderful weather, and common sense tells us that in your climate you need to take care. My concern is that those who make millions off of us using SPF lotions and the medical community are telling us to totally stay out of the sun! I just want to engage open thought and hopefully people who have to use sun protection check out what they are using, and to really look at the research. Thanks for the note back I appreciate it.
