Skin Cancer

Hey Beauties, I had a bit of a rubbish day today. 3 skin cancers, little not especially ‘serious’ ones. (And I hate that term because obviously all skin cancer is serious, get your skin checked yearly! ) burnt off my face and I’ve got a further 2 on my shoulder that have been sent off for testing which is a little more concerning. I’m 29 this year and have very fair dry sensitive skin. I wear sunscreen every day and have done for over ten years. I’m constantly dealing with acne/reactions to the sunscreen.

My question is this. What sunscreen do you wear? Do you change sunscreens according to the season? Bonus Points if it’s helping your dry skin. Extra super bonus points if it’s cruelty free.

Thanks!!

Green Teacup & Joole, I’m glad you’ve both been very conscientious in regards to having your skin checked. As we know, the best way to deal with skin cancer is to have it detected early. I’m very much hoping for clear results for you both.

I can understand your frustration regarding finding a good facial sunscreen, as a lot of ingredients break me out or make my skin sting and burn. The worst part is that anything over spf 15 doesn’t have a full ingredients list as a rule, which makes selection even more difficult. I think I started a thread once upon a time ranting about that!

I’m very tempted to try Alpha- H as it’s one of the few brands that DOES list all ingredients. Thanks for the tip Pink Hornet:)

Hope everything’s okay *Green Teacup*! I just got a suspicious mole removed from my arm too and I’m getting the results next week. I’ve got combination skin so I’ve been looking for sunscreen that doesn’t leave an oily residue.. Prior to the Neutrogena ultra sheer dry touch sunscreen lotion, which I’ve just started using, I’ was relying on SPF in my foundations and BB cream for my face.. I’m afraid I’m not as conscientious as you when it comes to SPF but I’ve learnt my lesson. Have you used the Neutrogena one before?

Hey Joole 🙂 Neutrogena ‘burns’ my skin. I’ve tried but it’s a no go for me. I’ve got an appointment with my dermatologist in about a fortnight so I’ll let you know what chemist/upper mid range products she suggests.

I’m sorry you had a mole cut out and hope you’re in the clear.

At the moment I’m using Olay Complete Defense 30+ on myself and while it’s fine on my neck, arms and hands it’s irritating my face 🙁 Sad to see one of my go to’s isn’t working for me.

I haven’t had any reactions to the Neutrogena one yet since I’ve only used it once.. I do remember experiencing stinging from their moisturizers though :S Thank you Green Teacup! I would love to know what your dermatologist recommends 🙂 I hope you find the perfect sunscreen that works for you soon!

I love True Solutions, not cheap at $60 but they are 100ml and come in different varieties like sport, tinted, moisturising. They feel great on, I’ve used the sport variety and total age protector and neither are heavy or oily and they don’t break me out.

I switched to Kosmea Australia skin care about a month ago ( I LOVE the replenishing moisture cream) and haven’t regretted it for a sec. No reactions, no ‘burning’ feeling after application and the Purifying Cream Cleanser has been doing a great job. Now just to find a sunscreen that doesn’t ‘burn’ or break me out.

*Green Teacup* you’ve had a bad run. I’m glad you’re looking after yourself.
Both my parents have had cancers burnt off. My dad & his brothers have facial scarring from having skin cancers removed. I get checked once a year & it only takes about 10 minutes for the actual examination under a UV light.
Let me echo your entreaty that people get themselves checked! (They bulk bill!)
My skin is _so_ very oily, my recommendations won’t help you. Don’t forget your deck area (neck & décolletage).
Have you considered mineral makeup? Put it over your sunscreen or tinted moisturiser with SPF. It’s another level of protection. I love Physicians Formula mineral powders, but I believe all mineral powders offer sun protection.

Have to add my sentiments to misfortune8 how important skin cancer checks are, no matter what your age. Some of you are probably aware of my dad’s recent passing due to an aggressive form of facial skin cancer – he’d had skin cancers on his face, head and hands burnt off/excised for the last 20 years and I’m extremely vigilant myself, having had an eye surgery to remove one just below my eye 6 years ago – nothing since and have annual checks.

I also try to use natural sunscreens and tanning products and have tried the Wotnot natural sunscreen, but found it quite thick and greasy, leaving an oily shine on the skin, but would rather use it than a chemical-laden product.

I purchase Eco Tan (Qld company and a wonderful story behind it’s creation) self-tanning products for my daughters to use (organic with no hidden nasties) and they’ve recently introduced a Natural Coconut Sunscreen to their range – face and body/natural skin tone and no hidden nasties. I pre-ordered it last week and it’s not due to be shipped until 15th September, but looking forward to seeing what it’s like and even if I use it on my face and the Wotnot sunscreen on my body, I’ll feel good using natural sunscreens. Don’t have any info on the ingredients (will check when the product is here) but here’s a link to the product on their website.

Sorry to hear that Green Teacup, I hope that you find something to suit you. I’ve used the Vichy SPF 50+ in the past and really liked it.

I also enjoy using the Olay complete defense spf 30 for daily wear when I’m mostly indoors.
