Vitamin D and Acne?

Hi beauties,
Recently, I started taking Vitamin D capsules. I’m currently on anti-depressants and while putting in my script to refill my prescription the pharmacist told me that anyone who takes anti-depressants should also be taking a source of Vitamin D. I’ve been on anti-depressants for 4 years and this was the first I’d heard of needing Vitamin D, however I thought, okay, well this pharmacist must know what she’s talking about, can’t hurt to try it.
So I started taking the Vitamin D capsules and a few days later I broke out with acne all over my face. It’s not uncommon for me to get a random pimple every now and then but this was like nothing I’d ever experienced before.. My face was covered in acne.
After using acne specific products and finding only a little relief I went to my local GP about it. She informed me that she had also recently started taking Vitamin D capsules and had broken out with acne too. She also mentioned there’s no proven study to say that ‘Yes, Vitamin D may cause acne’.
So, I was just wondering, has anyone else out there experienced something similar to this after taking Vitamin D capsules?
Lots of love xo

It’s interesting that this has been bought up actually, because I have been taking vitamin D supplements on and off for a while now and I have found the opposite! My skin actually tends to clear up when I’m taking vitamin D and break out when I’m not. It may be the brand you use (I use and recommend “osteVit-D + calcium”. Good luck! Xxxxxx

  • I take Vitamin D (on the advice of my doctor) but have never had any issues with acne. I am a lot older than you though.

I didn’t know about Vitamin D tablets and anti-depressants. I have been told to take Vitamin B Complex with my Anti Depressants though.

I’m not sure why this happened , because the only time i took vitamin D supplements was after getting my laser skin resurfacing procedure from Tooronto’s Beauti-med Clinic. I was also told that I will get a lot of Vitamin D from sunlight. so I think and chose sunlight as my second and best option. Have you tried sunlight . It is the one and only large scale source of natural Vitamin D available to us.

It is not neccessary to be on a vitamin d supplement with antidepressants, unless your blood tests have shown you are low in vitamin d there is also no need to be taking supplements, worth a check but for most people even a small amount of time in the sun each day is an adequate amount on your vitamin d requirements, worth checking your levels though as a vitamin d deficiency can cause many symptoms one being depression, maybe this is what your pharmacist meant.

I have had acne but never taken vitamin d so can’t say first hand but I’ve heard vitamin d has IMPROVED people’s skin so it might be the dose you started on?

Either way I hope you can find a solution, good luck x

I’m unsure whether Vit D causes acne but I have heard that low levels of Vit D and Iron can contribute to depression or low energy levels and moodiness.

I would take blood tests and talk to my gp before taking supplements though because you don’t want to OD.

When my blood tests showed low Vit D and Iron levels, my gp put me on a plan to increase both and I don’t think I remember there ever being an increase in the amount of acne I got. Now you have made me think. Because a bit after I did go on Roaccutane so…maybe?

  • Oh wow, that acne episode sounds truly awful. I’m glad that the pharmacist & GP are both advising Vitamin D supplements – medication, sunscreen use and people not being outside much during a busy week can all contribute to both Vitamin D deficiency, or Vitamin D not absorbing well enough to help prevent osteoporosis.

Personally, I’ve been on Vitamin D, along with calcium supplements for years, and haven’t had a skin flare up I could relate to taking either of them. I did start my routine in my 40’s though.

I’d suggest raising this with the pharmacist, maybe a change to a different brand of Vitamin D capsules could relieve the issue. Or if it’s persisting, it may be worthwhile seeing if your GP can refer you to a dermatologist. I’d also suggest asking your GP what they’ve done to help reduce their own acne / vit D issue. Good luck
