Vitamin c powder
After reading about this in the forums I decided to go out and buy some…but now realise that I don’t know enough about it.
I bought the skin institue vitamin c powder and where I bought it from , the beautician said that it needs to be activated in something – what do you guys activate it in? A specific serum or just products you already have?
When do you use it – I was planning on using it as a night treatment but the beautician said that it is best used during the day – when do other people use it?
It makes my hands smell funny…does anyone else notice this?

I’ve been using a sample of Paula’s Choice vitamin c spot treatment, but never knew it could be used for “spots” ie pimples…? This one says to use on brown spots to fade them, that it can be used both morning and night, but needs a sunscreen if worn in the daytime, and not to rub it into the skin, just to pat it onto the required areas. So does this go for all vit c treatments? You all seem to be rubbing it in, if applying in a serum…?

I’m using Derma-i Cosmecuticals 25% Vitamin C serum and it is fantastic. Also 100% ascorbic acid so pure Viramin C. I only need like 2 drops for my whole face. The results are fantastic and my skin feels so much fresher and ‘plump’. I wouldn’t use vitamin c in powder form because it won’t give the same results and you don’t know what else is mixed in with it. The reason why only a couple of companies do Vit C in serum form s because it is so hardto stabilse and bottle.

This might sound weird, but I’ve been using vitamin c powder from the health food shop! Not, sure what the cosmecutical ones feel like, but this one is a little bit grainy, so I get a nice vitamin c scrub:) I think the results are good, and it only costs a few dollars.
The Vitamin C crystals you can purchase from the health food store or supermarket are composed of Ascorbic Acid, which is not dissimilar to the Skinstitut Vitamin C Powder. They both contain this ingredient.

Hi beautystar, the Skinstitut Vitamin C Powder is composed of 100% Ascorbic Acid, which is the most potent form of Vitamin C. Topical Vitamin C stays in the skin from between 24 and 32 hours, so once daily is fine – preferably in the morning. I mix mine in with the Skinstitut Age Defence SPF+50 – just a tiny shake the size of a grain of rice. Simply mix together then apply. And yes, you can mix it with your usual moisturiser if you prefer 🙂

I disagree and I have always used my Vitamin C during the AM, as recommended by my therapist. It apparently also helps your sunscreen work more effectivly, so that makes sense to me, plus you can’t use it in combination with Vitamin A (at the same time) as they can make each other inactive or cause a reaction. Anyone who uses Retinoids or Vitamin A knows that they need to wear a good quality sunscreen, the resarch done on this product though definitely prooves it is benefical for reducing the signs of ageing and slowing the skins ageing process 🙂

Oh and normally Vitamin C treatments should be used during the day and any Vitamin A treatments at night
Vitamin C is unstable and becomes inactive when exposed to UV light, so using it in the daytime is kind of pointless. The main issue with Vitamin A (and any retinol product) is that it sensitises your skin to sunlight, making it far more likely that you will burn and possibly blister. Skincare was so much easier before we started using such fickle products!

I find the water works wonders mixed with the C powder as a spot treatment, it is all that I use these days on my zits 🙂
beautystar I believe you darl, I have a permanent orange stain on my hand where I drop my Vitamin C serum on my hand in the same spot before applying it to my face each day. It took me ages to work out where that stain was coming from though, lol. -

My only concern would be staining – i am finding that when i mix it on my hand it turns my hand a bit orangish, though this hasnt occured on my face – but it may if yu use it as a mask. I have noticed that it does stain my blackheads a bit, and make them a bit more noticible.
Beautystar – if your Vit C is turning orange that means it’s oxidised and pretty much useless. This is why you should never buy a Vit C product that’s tinted – you won’t know if it’s oxidised.
There’s some excellent info on the site below – including how to make your own serum (pretty much mix Vit C powder with Glycerin & water – easy and cheap!)
