Stinging sensation

Hi all, a little help needed.

Over the past 6 months I’ve gradually been swapping out my expensive skincare products to pharmacy ones to get me through cost wise while we built our new house (1 week till we move yay!)
The last week I have been experiencing a stinging burning feeling across my nose and cheeks but I can’t determine what it is. The “newest” product I’ve been using for about 2 weeks before I started to get this sensation. It seems that if I wash it off and put my last little bit of expensive on I still get the stinging and burning.
Any ideas on what it may be? Usually when I have a reaction to something it’s immediate not 2 weeks later.
This is my routine
Day

Cleanser – Clarins alco free gentle foaming cleanser
Toner – Witch hazel alco free toner
Serum – Olay regenerist micro sculpting serum
Eye cream – Bioderma sensibio eye cream
Moisturiser – Olay regenerist micro sculpting day cream (only started 2 days ago)
Suncream – Moogoo spf 40+

Night

Micellar water – bioderma sensibio Micellar – had tried garnier sensitive but instant burning on first use about 2 weeks ago
Night cream – Olay regenerist night cream

Hey duality just an update for you, I’ve been using the Avene cleanance and my face is brilliant! Some advice if you don’t mind….

    At the moment I’m doing
    Cleanance Cleanser
    Cleanance Toner
    Cleanance expert
    TriAcneal expert

I don’t know if I need the TriAcneal expert as I don’t have acne, but am liking the results i have been having. Should I be changing to a more nourishing moisturiser or incorporating in a serum or vitamin into the routine? Or changing to a different range of theirs entirely since my skin has settled?

    Thanks 🙂

2663anne glad to hear things are improving! Avene is pretty good stuff, all their range is good. As for what else you are needing, well that depends on what you are trying to treat? When choosing a skincare regime you have to ask what are my 2 main problems that I`m trying to fix?

      1. So there is a main problem, like for me it is my skin is normal but prone to dryness due to the actives I use, so my key goal is to maintain hydration to prevent my moisture barrier from being destroyed (you know all about this now). My treatment is ceramides. I use the Korean brand Bisoupoche but there are other brands.

      2. pigmentation and prevention of ageing is my second problem and when no.1 has been taken care of and my moisture barrier is good I can start tackling that so tretinoin, vitamin C and other actives.

So what are your 2 key concerns? Keeping your moisture barrier is obviously the first one (should be everyone`s first one). The range from The Ordinary has got some great products for moisture – I missed out on their Squalane serum because it was unavailable when I ordered (but it`s available now). Start a repair regime by adding in some ceramides and squalane would be my recommendation and when you feel that is going well (say around 6 weeks) then adding in an active.

        So my 2 concerns are

        1. Oily T-zone but dry the rest of my face
        2. Anti ageing prevention

So about me… I`m approaching 35, clear skin but blackheads on nose and chin maintained well with cleanser and exfoliating scrub twice a week. No pigmentation to worry about, not prone to breakouts, no fine lines and wrinkles.

I`d be using The Ordinary Squalane Serum and also start with Vit C as it is good for overall brightening and as it is an antioxidant then it also prevents ageing. Try a lower % version first before getting into the higher stuff like OST Vit C. The Ordinary makes a good one with a milder version:

        Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% https://www.victoriahealth.com/product/Ascorbyl-Glucoside-Solution-12/12232

Other notable anti-ageing products they sell are the Argireline Solution 10% https://www.victoriahealth.com/product/Argireline-Solution-10/12306

Or you can get a bit of an all-in-one The Buffet https://www.victoriahealth.com/product/Buffet/12194

As Petal discovered multiple links don`t seem to work at the moment, it will send you to the last link only, so copy/paste them or just go to Victoria Health and you will find them.

Oh i feel your pain. I had issues with heaps of different products stinging my face too.

Some lovely darlings on here recommended the avene range and from one sore, cranky-faced sister to another, the avene tolerance range is magical.

    Oh and ditch the witchhazel.

    Best of luck!

I’ve got a stinging sensation from product trial (Natural Instinct, ring a bell??). Initially I thought it was the moisturiser, cut that out, then even cut out the cleanser, still no help. It only completely stopped a few weeks after I stopped using the whole line.

I am probably not helping you out with figuring out which product caused it but it is sometimes complicated and it can also take a very long time for the barrier to heal, so cutting out a product every 2 weeks may not help. Sometimes you can “become” sensitised to a particular product after using it for a while.

For me, i have a “backup” basic minimum regime that has 3 or 4 trusted products that I have been using for years. If my skin plays up I switch back to my minimum and start fresh.

    Congratulations on your new house!!

Thanks, I have a very small amount of Clarins left for that reason…. I have since cut out the foaming cleanser and using the last of my “”safe”” cleanser, also stopped the witch hazel toner and the stinging has stopped… I`ve been using the bioderma sensibio toner as it`s ph balanced like the above suggestion.

Thanks, we move in on Thursday it`s getting so real now but I still can`t see myself living there!

    Duality well said. Beautiful advice.
Id be switching up my moisturizer to one with lots of ceremides and fatty acids.
Also perhaps try a non foaming cleanser. .. if your going to use a aha bha witch hazel or any product on your skin daily they say to use a cream/balm/ oil cleanser to keep the barrier protected. Its too much otherwise. Strips skin.
I think it’s the witch hazel causing the problem personally. . good luck. Keep us updated xx

Sounds like a compromised skin mantle (aka moisture barrier). Usual culprits are too many exfoliants (chemical or physical), drying products (even the word foaming usually has my skin having a hissy), stripping the natural healthy oil with astringents (witch hazel, alcohol are common ones).

You don’t say your skin type but regardless your routine has my skin crawling – I couldn’t use those products one at a time let alone all together! Even if you had oily skin it is still too much.

You will need to baby your skin back to health. Gentle cleansing only (I’d suggest the Avene range, it’s designed to be gentle enough to be used post chemical peel) then lots and lots of ceramides!

Go for the LLL approach, lots of light layers. Toner, essence, serum, ampoule, moisturiser. I killed my moisture barrier with tretinoin when I first started – got told it gets worse before it gets better, just ride it out the stinging will stop – yeah no, it didn’t, even plain water hurt!

If you were into Korean or Japanese stuff then the Mizon Black Snail heals like nothing else for me. The Rosette Ceramide gel also is great. Ceracolla ceramide gel is also excellent, probably prefer that over the Rosette (they are both Japanese). The best soothing and cooling hydrating cream would be the Cosrx Rice Sleeping pack – it’s wonderful. The honey version is pretty darn good too, it’s a gel so probably more suited for the warmer weather.

Thanks. Im still fairly new to this “”skincare”” thing.
I have sensitive skin with an oily t-zone. I`m 34.
You`re suggesting swapping out the toner and foaming cleanser and looking at the Avene range?
Ahh I get so confused with this! What would you suggest as a routine?

      • 7 yrs, 4 mths ago

The PH mantle of your skin is around 5.5, if you use products that are strongly alkaline (like all your foaming cleansers) it will strip your skin and make it feel tight, dry and sore. Try to find products that are slightly acidic like your skin. Once you wash with highly alkaline product then tone with your astringent witch hazel toner then follow up with products that contain actives you get into problems.

You cleanser needs to have a PH like your skin, or even a neutral PH. The Avene cleansers are great for compromised skin – either the Gentle Milk Cleanser or the Tolerance Extreme are great. Then follow with a simple PH balancing, hydrating toner (can`t suggest a western one unfortunately, I only use Korean) or try using a hydrating facial mist like Swisse makes as a toner.

Your moisturiser should contain lots of ceramides (and cholesterol, because you stripped away your natural skin cholesterol). Again I can`t suggest Western ones but apparently the CeraVe range (available on iHerb) is supposed to be excellent. If you want to use an oil then a few drops of something like the Goodness Chia oil can help.

Have a read through the ingredient lists (if you can`t find them on a website then go to cosdna.com and type your product name in, it will list ingredients and ratings). Avoid anything foaming (usually highly alkaline), alcohols of any type, actives (vitamin C, retinols, fruit acids etc).

When things settle and no longer sting, then switch to a good oil balm cleanser to remove your sunscreen (Trilogy make one and there are other similar brands). Toners should always be PH adjusting and hydrating then your skin can cope with the actives you throw at it.

Wow thank you. You are making sense of this, which is helping a lot. I`ll go to Priceline tomorrow and hit the Avene cleanser. I`ll look into ph balancing toners now.
Thanks so much for your help!

2663anne don`t know what shops you have nearby but Chemists Warehouse has the best prices for Avene that I can remember. I think at least $6-10 cheaper than Priceline.

It’s difficult to say what could be causing it as you use quite a few products, have you thought about not using one product and slowly cycling through your routine to see if you’ve developed a sensitivity to something you’re using?
