My skin is both oily and dry

Hi everyone,

My face is visibly oily, it always has quite a shine to it, and I use blotting paper to help control it.

However, as soon as I put any form of makeup on – whether its primer or powder or foundation – it goes dry. BUT IT’S STILL SHINY.

It’s this horrible flaky but shiny skin and I don’t know why it’s like this. I’ve even been using overnight hydrating serum.

I have been using the Philosophy skin care range for almost a year now and I haven’t experienced any problems up until about two weeks ago.

Does anyone know what’s wrong? What can I do to fix it?

Thank you

I had the same problem until I started using Monsia skin care. It has not only balanced out my skin but has cleared it up as well. 🙂

Do you have dry skin? Throughout the day, it gets oily?

I use to have both eczema and pimples so this is what my friend taught me. You can also do your own research. Our skin produces natural oil. When you use products that strip off that natural oil, your skin starts thirsting for water so it starts producing it’s own oils. Our skin is very smart.

My guess with your make-up is that your skin is dry already and so when you use make-up, it shows. My skin use to have the same problem either in winter/summer. Try using a hydrating mist. It keeps the skin moist and hydrating the whole day. It’s about $14-$20. Look for the ingredient “humectant” as that binds moisture to your skin. This mist is also good if you work in an air-con environment (as air-cons dry our skin). Also try using a good moisturiser (avoid mineral oil and baby oil – check the ingredient section behind the product). If you have dry skin, use a milk-based cleanser.

Also drink 2L of water. It makes a difference. Not only will it clear your skin but it will also keep your skin hydrated.

I have the same problem! I’m no expert but it sounds like you have dehydrated skin. Dry skin is lacking in oil, whereas dehydrated skin is lacking in water. So when you apply a really rich moisturiser, it can tend to break you out and make your skin appear oilier, rather than tackle the flakes that appear, which are more apparent when you apply your foundation. Basically the skin loses its ability to hold enough water to keep it hydrated and plump. The result is flaky looking skin that feels almost like tissue paper. Things like air conditioning, cold weather, hot showers and air travel can really zap the water out of your skin.

I haven’t really found any products that work yet, but I hear Hydraluron by Indeed laboratories is good. I’m yet to try it but it has received some decent reviews.

Definitely agree with All is rosy. I have the exact same skin condition.
At first, I thought moisturisers or serums with oil (such as rosehip oil, primrose or jojoba oil) will help combat the ‘dryness’, since it’s evident that my skin looks oily by the end of the day I would say my skin produces enough oil without slathering on more facial oil.
Only recently that my beauty therapist recommended me using moisturiser with a lot of water content. She gave me some samples to take home and it really help replenish my dehydrated skin.
At this stage, all I know is that you search for sodium hyaluronate a common name listed in the ingredients section or aka hyaluronic acid, this ingredient helps the skin to retain water. Aloe barbadensis juice or aloe vera also helps but I don’t find it effective enough as sodium hyaluronate. Another to look out for is rosewater too!

External environment can have a big impact too, but air cons are the worse! Let us know how’s it going for you Jesl_l17? And goodluck!

Rosehip Oil has worked miracles for me!

I have always had tight and itchy dry skin that always had a layer of oil over it, and I tried so many oily skin products, so many combination skin products that never worked. Drank lots of water.. Nope.

I was always so scared of serums/oils because they’re ‘oil’.. and I had oily skin, didn’t I?? I changed up my skincare a bucketload, went to a no frills ‘normal’ skin cleanser, and I added RHO, and a gel moisturiser and my skin turned around almost within a week.

I recently went a week without RHO (My bad, I was too lazy too go to the shops and replenish my stock lol) and that horrible dry, flakey skin with oil slicks came back to haunt me. It’s definitely the oil that works best for me. I was seriously amazed at what it had done for me.. and my skin that I thought was sensitive has seemily evened itself out too and is able to handle a range of products now.

I have exactly the same problem, and it is incredibly frustrating. I can load on the moisturiser in the morning, which leaves my skin shiny, then put on makeup but it always starts peeling and flaking, which looks horrible by the end of the day, particularly around my nose. This is despite not even powdering for fear of it drying out my skin even more. Some days it gets so bad, I go without makeup altogether to avoid having the flaky bits exacerbated when make up settles in it.

I’ve actually tried jojoba oil, and while it does leave my face soft, I feel like it doesn’t do anything for how ‘moisturised’ my skin is, like after an actual moisturiser. I’m not sure if that makes sense, but how ‘plump’ my skin feels.

At the moment, I just use rosehip oil regularly, every time I wash my face and just generally avoid the matte-faced look. My skin seems better than it used to, but any solutions will be greatly appreciated.

I would try a BHA at night to start off with. My skin is all over the shop like that, however using a chemical exfoliant seems to help me. Paula’s choice makes the best ones that I have found. If you have not used them before, start off with 1% (I use 2% resist). You can also get trial sizes so you can test them. However, you can only buy online.

I remember reading somewhere that it’s good to switch up your skincare every now and then so that your face doesn’t get too used to particular products and stop having their beneficial effects. I have problems with oilier skin at times too and I find that changing my toners and facial cleansers help to lessen the oil after a week or so when my skin gets used to the new routine. The other thing is that you might be actually dehydrated so try drinking more water and trying out a different moisturizer.

Totally agree with Joole. Also with weather changing and we are now in Spring, you might need to change your skin care to suit the weather. I change my skincare products every few months to ensure that my skin gets the benefits of the products i use.

I also use thermal water spray during the day on my face to ensure that m skin is hydrate as working in office dehydrate the skin.

I have the same problem! You do need to change your skincare often as it gets used to it. Id try something that’s suitable for combination skin. Have you tried a cleansing oil?
