Inconsistency across batches of the same product

Has anyone experienced inconsistency across different batches of the exact same product?

I had never had this problem before, but lately I realised this in two different brands of products.

One is the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel. The batch that I had from 2014 was completely fine, but with the most recent batch (manufactured in 2015) I found the consistency is thicker, has less water content, colour is more yellow and the smell is also more “plastic”. I purchased it directly from the Clinique website. Contacted customer support and was reassured that they did not change the formulation but offered to exchange anyway. I just found it very strange as it is not entirely a “natural” product and it should have been manufactured under stringent protocols.

The other one is Kosmea. I just purchased a moisturiser which is a lot more yellow than the one I used to use. I contacted customer service and was told that because they use natural ingredients there would be variations (which I found an acceptable explanation).

I am wondering what are your experiences with this issue. Is this common? If you find the batch looks/smell different do you keep using it?

I have been lucky and never had this happen. Although I will be keeping an eye out now just to make sure, maybe I just wasn’t paying attention!

Some bloggers mentioned the same thing with NARS orgasm, the older ones are pinkish with glow but after that in latter batches the shade turns into yellowish with glitter. This is the reason that some people does not like it and some mention it as their HG.

That’s odd. i would expect better CS from Estee Lauder too.

I sent the product back to Clinique customer service, together with a photo showing the difference between the two products, and the batch numbers, and specify which batch is problematic. I said I would like a replacement. They have promptly replied, but said that the all the stock in the warehouse was the batch that they sent me (i.e. the batch that I think is off) and that the purchase price has been refunded into my credit card.

I think it was good of them to refund so promptly, but find it annoying and frustrating that they did not offer an explanation to the difference in product quality, nor a promise to look into the problem, nor an apology for the inconvenience. I felt that this is almost equivalent of them saying “have your money back and buy something else from another place”. I have expected a lot more in terms of product quality control, and customer service from the Estee Lauder group, as I use a lot of their products.

Oh yes, those examples do look a little different! I’ve had experiences like this with Sukin (natural products), and yep as I said in a review it was pretty obvious by the smell something was not right, and customer service fixed it up right away.
I think I’ve done a forum thread with a bit of a rant about the inconsistency from Revlon’s PhotoReady BB Cream, gosh that was just all over the place. Much happier with a different brand BB cream now thankfully. So I understand the confusion and frustration to a T!

It’s the DDM gel. The two arrived from the same parcel from Clinique The pump is the purchase and the tube is the sample tube.

I have emailed clinique. No explanation for the difference, but they offered to exchange.

I was expecting the product to look like the one on the left.

I can’t really zoom in on your pic to read, but are they the exact identical product? I know Clinique changed the formula of the Dramatically Different to a Plus version, which had new and different ingredients?

Other reasons for change is the age of the product. I used that moisturiser for years, and the bottle version goes yellower over time (I found a month or so after opening and using daily). The consistency also changed over time.

Finally I managed to compressed the picture (wasn’t allowed to upload as it was over 2MB).

The one on the right is the new batch which I think it looks and feels different to the old batch (left).

I hope I am not insane.

Based on all of the reviews that I’ve read, mascaras seem to be inconsistent. I’ve often bought a mascara because reviewers say that it is volumising, yet I haven’t been able to get volume out of it.

I’ve noticed this with eyeshadow palettes, you’ll read a review that says they were dry and chalky with no colour payoff then read another review that’s the complete opposite. I was hesitant to buy the Cargo Shanghai Nights palette from Ozsale because I’d read both types of reviews but luckily mine was full off silky smooth and highly pigmented product.
