Facial Oils and Serums

This could perhaps be a bit of a dumb question, but with so many products out there I have to ask. What is the difference between a facial oil (like Rosehip etc) and a serum? Should I be using both or are these are substitute for each other?

I have fairly good but sometimes sensitive skin, but otherwise well behaved.

Thanks for asking that question. I grew up thinking cleansing and moisturising was IT. And it just seems to have got more complex (but also more interesting!) as time has gone on.

A facial oil is very natural ie the Jojoba Company one is all Jojoba Oil, and the numerous Rosehip Oil options you can buy are, for the most part, pure Rosehip Oil – some brands combine oils too.

A serum is very different. Think of it as a moisturiser on steroids – they’re designed to work with specific concerns in some cases ie some will fade pigmentation, others are extra hydrating to help dry skin and wrinkles and so on. They’re super-concentrated with active ingredients, hence they’re more expensive, per mls, than a moisturiser will be.

Personally I use a Rosehip Oil in the morning, and a good serum at night. Both before moisturiser. Some BH members use more than one serum, as they want to treat more than one skin concern, others use oils and serums together too.

Have a good look on here too, there’s heaps of articles BH have posted about facial oils and serums, and what they are designed to do, plus recommended ones to use

It’s a good question. Up until 6 weeks ago, I probably didn’t know either. I’ve just trial Natural Instinct Plump & Renew Serum which is sort of like a primer for your Moisturiser. For me it seemed to make my skin feel tighter and allowed my moisturiser to absorb more into my skin.
I believe (and anyone is most welcome to correct me) a facial oil is a moisturising treatment as it has a thicker consistency.
