Droily Skin is a Thing!

I’ve always said I have acne prone combination skin. However, I’m starting to think that “combination” isn’t the right term. After a nasty incident with a Quick Fix Mega Moisture Gel Mask, I’ve dubbed my skin “droily”.

What is droily skin, you may ask? Well, young padawan, I will explain. My skin seems very oily on the outer layer, and it is. But when I use products that are specially formulated for oily skin, my skin throws a hissy fit and dries out. If I use anything too moisturising, my skin will be coated in oil all day and there’s nothing even a magic Genie could do for me ‘n’ my sensitive, acne prone, droily skin.

It sounds like my skin is just combination, but that would imply that I have oily & dry patches in DIFFERENT places on my face. Skin has layers, like onions & Ogres; my top layer of skin is very oily, but underneath that layer, I feel like my skin is very dry. Sometimes my skin likes to play a lil switcheroo and the bottom layer will be oily, leaving the top layer dry.

I know I sound crazy, you’re probably staring at the screen thinking what drugs is she on? What are your thoughts? Do you think droily skin could be a thing, or do you have similar issues?

Do you put a little into your skin at a time or do you dip into the jar, take a whole lot out on your finger and dab it all over your face and then work it in? I use a range called Monsia Skincare and after cleansing and toning my skin I put small dabs on my neck, cheeks, and forehead. I then gently work it into the skin. If it disappears in a nano second I add a little more. My skin colour is olive and skin type is normal. Never have greasy residue at all.

Droily….haha! This so me, well was…I started a new line of skin care called Monsia which has actually helped to balance out my skin and worked really well to keep it clear. It includes anti aging ingredients hyaluronic acid and collagen which i love at 33 as well as aloe and shea butter for sensitive skin types.

Nature_Girl posted about using Jojoba Oil for oily skin on another thread which some beauties have had some success with – http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/forums/skincare/natural-skincare-products-for-oily-skin

I have a similar problem to this if I use the wrong products…. and yes products for “oily skin” do seem to work.. temporarily before my skin fights back with a vengeance.
I went to a beauty therapist a few years ago who diagnosed my skin as “dehydrated oily” which means that basically if I’m not hydrating properly from both inside and out I end up with super crazy dry and oily patches at once.

I’ve found ditching the cheap products designed for oily and acne prone skin has done wonders as they strip out any of the good moisture and cause my skin to over produce oil in response. I’ve used a few products aimed more at “normal/combination” skin and some moisturiser specifically designed for dehydrated oily type skin (ella bache, cost 2 arms and a leg) and my skin is under much more control these days. I still tend to get a little bit oily, especially in summer but nowhere near as much and it’s a lot more consistent.

    I am not alone!!

For a while there I have been seriously worried I have some sort of weird skin ailment. My T-zone is absurdly oily and the rest of the face is riddled with dry patches. And then some days it just switches up. I’m either spritzing on hydrating mists or blotting off oil from my face. 🙁

    Hi Jesse395,

Wow your skin type sounds very interesting! And you know what, mine is quite similar! It’s not exactly the easiest skin type to deal with, is it… mine is super temperamental!

I just thought I’d give you a few links about subjects that might interest you about dehydrated skin, and combination skin. I hope these help you on your journey with ‘droily’ skin!

Maybe your skin is oily and sensitive?
I wouldn’t say I have quite such a dramatic reaction to products, but I always thought my skin was dry because I’d get that “tight” feeling after washing it always says means you have dry skin. Then about a year ago I was looking in the mirror and realized my face is quite shiny…I have oily skin! But it’s sensitive too.
