Dark spots and pigmentation

I’ve had a dark spot near my eye, on my cheekbone, that’s slowly been increasing in size. I think it’s an age spot (I’ve had it checked by doc). I’m 30 but I spent a large part of my late teens/early 20s tanning in the sun :(. Totally regret that now!

My usual serums aren’t doing anything to help so I’ve been researching brightening creams, pigmentation correctors etc. Does anyone know of any that work really well (preferably cruelty free)?

Thanks 🙂

It depends on the policy. Of course I am still minus $10 on postage so I think I wont be doing any online beautys anymore. This will be my last purchase .

I am returning Paula’s Choice Brightening Serum as they think I maybe allergic to ninaciminde which is their active ingredient ( it reddened my skin ) . So I am exchanging for some items and review those later. I am fortunate that I was allowed to do an exchange for something not suited. Good customer service from them .

Thanks ray_jay for your detailed comments. I’ll avoid the hydroquinone I think, anything that is banned scares me! I have looked at the Ultraceuticals serum before, so I think I’ll have another look at that one. And I will check out the Olay one too. What product with ahas do you use? Thankyou!

Also to add I agree with the comments re retinol. Try to use some 3 nights a week. There’s now heaps on the market affordable. Also try to avoid mineral oils, products with mineral oil. It can clog your pores and make skin/ pigmentation worse

Have to agree with snailor on this one.
I had terrible pigmentation a couple of years ago. I used everything I thought would work on the market.
I tried the john plunkets superfade with the hydroquoine and my skin hated it. I ended up with cycts on my face and my moles got sooo inflammed it was bad. Be careful with it. Although I know ppl say hydroquoine is ok I’m still warey of it and its banned in the us and Europe.
I did notice some lightening but it was all over. Also your only supposed to use it for 3 months and stop for 3. Be careful.

I ended up using ahas and vitamin c. I used ultraceulticals skin brightening serum with aha/ bhas and ninaciminde.. And this worked well. I now use a vitamin c serum.and ahas and it keeps it at bay. I still have some pigmentation but overall my skin looks good and the pigmentation is faded.
Look for products with vitamin c ahas and ninaciminde. Olays new lightening serum is good because it has ninaciminde. Your best to buy a vitamin c serum. Ultraceulticals abd Paula’s choice make good ones and combine with ahas and ninaciminde. Also a vitamin b serum works well especially if your skin is dehydrated.

I’m thinking I might just get a referral to a dermatologist from my GP. I need to get a skin check anyway so that will be subsidized, whereas for pigmentation it’s only partially covered.

I’ve started using the Palmer’s Eventone oil today. Gosh it’s lovely! Soaks right into my skin. I’ll see if it makes a difference, but it’s a beautiful face oil even if it does nothing for my pigmentation.

Vitamim C, retinol (pharmaceutical strength and pH), and chemical exfoliants are all excellent ingredients for reducing hyperpigmentation. Arbutin over the long term decreases melanin production so it prevents hyperpigmetation. Just remember to wear sunscreen when using this products as a) the sun is what triggers melanin production and b) retinol and chemical exfoliants increase photosensitivity.

I’ve got two pigmentation spots; one next to each eye (annoying). It’s not uncommon with my ethnic group (grrr). I need to look into this further!
