Lemon is often used to treat dark skin patches and spots, and you can use it to naturally lighten dark lips, too.

Squeeze a lemon and apply the juice on your lips before going to bed. Follow this simple remedy daily for one to two months.

Overexposure to the sun causes the body to produce excess melanin. This pigment protects the body from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Since melanin is brown in color, overexposure to sunlight leads to hyperpigmentation – which is caused by the excess of melanin in certain parts of the skin. The reasons for the presence of dark spots on your lips could be many. One of the most common reasons for the discoloration of lips could be smoking. Hormonal imbalances could also contribute to this. An increase in the level of iron has also been known to cause pigmentation on the lips. Biting and licking the lips could also lead to the darkening of the lips as saliva dries out the lips. The discoloration could also be due to a high intake of tea and coffee.

Like the skin, our lips also have a layer of dead skin covering them. As such it is important to remove this layer in order to expose the fresh skin. To exfoliate the skin, you can make a mixture of sugar grains and coconut oil or almond oil and rub it gently on the lips. You could also make a mixture of equal parts of honey, sweet almond oil and lemon juice, which you can apply thickly on your lips and leave overnight. Since saliva is one of major causes of black lips, you could apply a moisturizing lip balm instead of licking the lips to moisturize them. The use of lemon as a bleach helps in lightening the skin tone, besides giving it a firm texture. You can rub a slice of fresh lemon on the darkened area and allow the juice to settle on the skin, after which you can wash thoroughly. Avoid stepping out in the sun after using this procedure as the rays of the sun could oxidize the lemon present on the skin, and cause it to darken further. To reduce hyperpigmentation, you could also use tomato juice mixed with yogurt and a pinch of turmeric. Tomato naturally bleaches the skin, while yogurt and turmeric are known for their anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties which help soothe the skin and lighten the hyperpigmented skin. Another remedy that helps to treat blackened skin is the application of clarified butter on the lips. Application of petroleum jelly is also a common and effective remedy, as it helps to reduce the level of excess pigmentation as well as keep the skin on the lips smooth and prevents it from chapping and breaking

I don’t think you can lighten the colour of your lips in a natural and non-harming method. But you can prevent it getting darker. If you love using lipsticks, always put a primer on before the lipstick. Also making sure you clean your lips with eye and lips makeup removal (I recommend L’oreal..cheap and effective). Appreciate the colour of your lips! Lips colour gives you natural definition of your feature! =) Make sure you moisturise them well especially in winter~

No lip balm or scrub is going to lighten your lips naturally- the only way you could possibly change it I imagine is some sort of bleaching product which would be toxic near your mouth. It’d be like using skin whiteners, except on your lips- and the oral mucosa is so sensitive! All a lip balm or scrub will do is exfoliate the top layer of dead skin, whereas the pigment will be much deeper.

Did a bit of quick searching on what can cause different lip colurs, and here’s a snippet from Yahoo Q’s:
What Factors Decide The Color Of Lips
” With light skin colour, the lip skin contains less melanocytes (cells which produce melanin pigment, which give skin its colour).Because of this, the blood vessels appear through the skin of the lips, which lead to the notably red colouring. With darker skin colour this effect is less prominent, as in this case skin of the lips contains more melanin and this visually affects the lip colour. The skin of the lip forms the border between the exterior skin of the face and the interior mucous membrane of the inside of the mouth. ”

So I guess my question is – what is your complexion – ie is this an abnormality for complexion, or normal and you just don’t like the way it looks? The reason I ask is, it could affect the method/s you try
