Applying fish oil to your face?

Hi ladies,

So recently, thanks to tretinoin, I have acquired a dry, flaky nose which will not. stop. peeling. This is after using rose hip oil, cetaphil moisturiser and olive oil, with no joy (although I do still love my Sukin rose hip oil :P).

After a little online research I’ve discovered that piercing a fish oil capsule and applying it topically should help with dryness as well as skin pigmentation, a bonus considering that I’m currently trying to clear my pigmented acne scars also. I’ve also read that it improves wrinkles although, being 25, I don’t really have any yet (although prevention is better than cure, right? :P). Apparently the high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids can help to bolster the skin, enabling it to hold on to moisture.

I’ve got a big tub of Nature’s Own odourless fish oil (1000mg) and seeing as I’m not leaving the house today, decided to conduct a little experiment. I’ve pierced a capsule, massaged the oil over my face, neck and backs of hands and will rinse off in a warm shower in a couple of hours.

Being odourless, it doesn’t smell terrible, it is, however, a very oily-oil and feels greasy on my face, unlike rose hip.

If anyone is interested I’ll report back on my findings, post rinsing my face. If I like the results I’ll probably try it as an overnight treatment, some time during the next week. I’d be keen to turn this into an on-going experiment if everything goes to plan and there aren’t any horrible break-outs!

Has anyone else on BH tried applying fish oil topically? If so, what’ve your results been? I’d be really interested to hear! 🙂

I didn’t see any follow up post from this post four years ago 🙂 – I have some food grade Omega 3-6-9 that I wont get to use. I’m thinking of putting some essential oils in with it and using as a bath oil. Any thoughts?

Interesting experiment of topical application of fish oil. What about flax seed oil or chia seed oil?

What was the verdict with this experiment? It sounds interesting….

I previously tried fish oil around the eyes after a youtuber posted it, however I could not stick to it because it reeked plus wasn’t great when it got into my eyes either. But would love to know others experiences

This is interesting but I’d first like to know whether Fish oil or Vitamin E oil are comodogenic? I used to use coconut oil as a moisturizer, liberally, until I found out it was in fact exacerbating my HUGE blackhead problem (I swear, I’ll be a chronic black head sufferer) and so now I’m trying out argon oil, jojoba oil and I want to try hemp oil too!

Non-oil related advice: I had a HUGE blackhead problem, then I started using Bioré warming blackhead scrub. I now alternate it with a different Bioré cleanser, but the warming blackhead cleanser is my favourite. When I started using it over a decade ago, my blackheads started to clear up. I LOVE Bioré.
I’ve recently discovered skin oils too, jojoba & macadamia, & I love both.
TYPO ALERT: you mean comEdogenic, not comOdogenic. I always have to correct myself. I always think of komodo dragons.

Fish oil contains a high percentage of omega 3 fatty acids and there’s no doubt your face would benefit from these as they bolster the skin’s barrier function, improving texture and may provide protection from the damaging effects of UV.

At Little Lady Health, you could use tomato juice, organic yogurt and honey to moisturize your skin. All natural remedies in your kitchen. Give it a try!

Wow! Sounds interesting! I would have never thought of applying fish oil to my face and have never heard of such a thing before, but I can actually see how it might help dry skin. I also have super dry, sensitive skin and a few acne scars here and there, so I really would love to hear your feedback Pekt as to whether this helps or not 🙂

I would research online or talk to your doctor first before you put it on your face. Nevertheless, I have heard avocado oil is great for dry skin as well as grape seed oil. Maybe try those out!
