wedding makeup help

I never wear makeup. On the odd occasion I wear something it’s just a light BB cream.

I’m 42, large pores and occasional breakout. I have no idea of a good primer to choose, and foundation. I’ve started searching but it’s SO confusing.

Any advice or brand recommendations would be wonderful. I’m looking for something to give me good coverage yet still have a natural look rather then a caked on mask.

help anyone?

Something to consider when hiring a makeup artist: they usually stick to one brand of makeup, and that brand of makeup does not necessarily suit all types of skin. The makeup artist I hired for my wedding specialised in ethic backgrounds, which is why I hired her, however the makeup creased on my matron of honour (who is Caucasian).

My strong recommendation, if you have the time, is find a trusted friend who is into makeup and hit the beauty counters at David Jones, Myer and Mecca to try foundations. Avoid anything with an SPF as it will impact photography (SPF will cause flashback on your skin – a good makeup artist will know this, otherwise you will need to let your photographer know you have an SPF in your foundation and they will adjust the lenses accordingly, but it’s a hassle). You can typically get samples of foundations from most counters for you to try, as well as primers.

I found that, for the big day, a great (reliable) moisturiser, primer, setting spray and blotting papers were more important to me than anything else, and I left the makeup problems to my artist. I booked a trial, advised her what look I wanted, got what I wanted, and then all was wonderful for the day. But then, I also went all out.

Figure out what kind of look you want and have a play. Make sure it stays fun for you rather than some big stressful production x

Makeup artists is the way to go but also ask them not to do a look thats too heavy because you want to look your best but not like a different person on your most important day.

I’m just looking at a friends wedding pics and she is so heavily made up that shes like a difference person.

I agree with Zaralis 1000%! My mum got married a couple of weeks ago and wanted me to do her makeup, I told her to get it done by a proper makeup artist because they know what works for photos and everything will last the day. She looked incredible and her makeup was flawless from 11am to midnight 🙂 You can have a trial first so anything you’re uncomfortable with can be changed (lots of young ones have their makeup trial the day of their hens night so they can look all fancy!), but seriously it’s worth it if you’re a no makeup person like my mum.

I highly recommend hiring a makeup artist, they understand how to make your skin look perfect for photos but also natural and ensure that it lasts all day long. On the day of your wedding there is going to be a hell of a lot going on, it can be one less thing to worry about.

If you are buying makeup specifically to wear at the wedding and you don’t normally wear makeup, I don’t suggest that you buy high-end products because it will be a waste of money for just one occasion. Besides, many affordably-priced products are actually great quality. 🙂

If your main concern is large pores, I highly recommend Innoxa’s Skin Perfecting Pore Vanishing Cream as a primer. If you have dry skin, a great brightening one is L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer. A good all-rounder is L’Oreal Base Magique Primer. You could also use a light layer of your BB cream as a primer, which is what I often do! It works just as well.

As for foundation, Bourjois Healthy Mix, L’Oreal True Match, Rimmel Match Perfection and Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous foundation are all fantastic and affordably priced. Covergirl and L’Oreal have the highest coverage of the bunch but still look natural. To avoid having cakey foundation, I suggest that you use a damp makeup sponge to apply your foundation in thin layers. And don’t forget to powder your t-zone because it can look especially shiny in pictures.

When buying a foundation and primer, make sure that they don’t contain SPF! A low SPF shouldn’t be too bad, but often SPF can cause ‘flashback’ during photography and leave your face looking pale as it reflects the light.

Good luck, I hope this helped! 🙂

Wow! So thorough. Thank you so so so much.

I wasn’t sure whether this was for your own wedding or whether you were attending as a guest? If you are a guest, maybe book to have your makeup done at a cosmetics counter – you will be able to redeem the cost on the purchase of a product. This means you don’t have to buy a face full of makeup products you most likely won’t use again, and don’t have to worry about applying it yourself. If it is your own wedding, you might want to use a makeup artist for the same reasons.

Although I haven’t used it personally, I know a lot of makeup artists swear by Benefit’s Porefessional as a primer. For foundation MAC Studio Fix Fluid, Estée Lauder Double Wear or Illamasqua Skin Base all have great coverage.

Just remember if you are doing your own make up for the big day, that you will need to apply everything slightly heavier/darker than usual, in order for it to show up in photos. Make sure you practise a lot beforehand and take plenty of pictures to determine how it looks in different lights. Once you have figured out exactly what products you love, make a list so that on the day there is slightly less stress. Good luck 🙂
