Moving Make-up

Hi beauties!

I’m moving cities very soon and need some tips on moving my make-up without destroying it! My make-up box/bag/collection is way way way too heavy to take on the plane, so I’ll have to leave it and pack it in my car (dad’s driving it down for me). I’m worried about how the heat will effect all my make-up! I’ll be taking my most treasured make-up bits on the plane with me, but how do I protect the rest of my make-up from the heat in my car?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated! I do apologise if there has been a previous post about this, I searched but couldn’t find anything.

Girls, I am a fanatic organizer. Want to make my bag really tidy. Where can I buy all needed things?

I moved just recently (purchased my first home) and the move included a 4 hour trip in the car. I have a lot of make-up and was concerned about things melting or breaking. I would have loved to place all my make-up on my back seat but had other important things to place there (my precious dog Kia, my TV and an antique side table my grandma left me). In preparation for the trip:

    1) I wrapped all my palettes, powders and glass bottles in newspaper and packed them in boxes tight enough so they did not move around. I then marked the box fragile in capital letters so that the friends helping me move knew the box was precious. Unfortunately this had to go in the boot, but everything survived so I am happy.

    2) I love lipstick, particular YSL lipsticks, which are not cheap. I therefore took extra precautions with these. As my car is not very well air-conditioned (summertime in Australia is not a fun time to move house) I packed these in plastic bags and placed them in an old esky with anything else that might melt (like my Graftobian HD Cream Foundations and NYX cream blushes) and added some cold packs I had frozen in my freezer. This kept them cold for the entire trip and I did not have a single one melt.

    3) I wrapped my brushes (the ones without brush rolls) in old pillow cases and lay them in my toiletry bag. This ensured the bristles were kept in place and were not bent or pulled out of shape in anyway.

    4) Then I just took basic precautions with everything else. I wrapped anything liquid in a zip lock bag so that if, god forbid, the bottle did break it would not be a huge mess. I stacked my mineral eye-shadow samples into towers and wrapped them in glad wrap (as the lids have a nasty habit of unscrewing). And lastly I bubble wrapped all my nail polishes (mostly OPI) and placed them in a box, packed tightly together so they would not move around or knock against each other.

My moved was very successful, the only casualty was a EOS lip balm a friend had brought back from the USA for me. It melted all through my handbag, which ironically was supposedly safe in the fount of the car with me. 🙂

Good luck with your move, I hope my story gives you some good tips.

Great tips – will keep in mind when I next move (hopefully not in a long time!). Ziplock bags are the way to go when travelling as well.

Thanks for all the tips everyone! So far so good, packing tape around the lids of containers and bottles is genius! Once I’ve finished packing and unpacking I’ll pop back and let you guys know what I found worked best, and if everything survived!

Hi dorme. This might be a lil time consuming but if you have the time to spare, I say give it a shot. These are the things I did when I moved from the Philippines to Australia and from Canberra to Sydney.

    1. Bubble wrap all powder products that may break or crack in transit. I did this to all my NARS, MAC and Tarte blushes and not a single one cracked. All my single MAC eyeshadows were also bubble wrapped for protection. I actually also did this to all my perfume bottles and foundation bottles (or anything that comes in glass bottles) as I was worried they would leak or break (I also put my perfume bottles in separate ziplock baggies).

    2. If you don’t have a makeup traincase or a cosmetic bag that’s big enough to house all your makeup, put similar products in a ziplock bag ie all liners go in one bag, tools in another (sharpeners, sponges, lash curlers, etc). This helps to “declutter” your suitcases.

    3. Lipsticks and cream products (concealers, cream foundations) are tricky as they tend to melt in the heat but if you keep your A/C on for the entire duration of the trip, they should be fine. I moved from ACT to NSW just about a month ago when both states were in the higher 20s to lower 30s and all my lipsticks are fine including my MAC cremesheens which are notorious for melting.

Optional: When packing, stuff your powder products between clothing items to give them a bit of cushion. This is a especially good if you don’t have a cosmetic bag or traincase. I also keep in my handbag my most prized makeup products just to be sure.

I hope my tips help you move your stuff. I’ll hop back here again in case there’s something I forgot to mention coz I have to do these again tonight in preparation of another move (I’ll be moving houses this weekend). Oh, the joys of moving. Good luck!

Put a makeup pad on top of any pressed powders/blushes, etc. to ensure they will not crack. Keeping them insulated will help prevent the heat, so wrapping your make up bag in a towel could help.

    good luck with the move.

I’m guessing the car is airconditioned, make sure that’s on for the trip. Make sure you seal anything liquid ie toner, serums, hair products, nail polish removers etc. A good wide sticky tape is all you’ll need to seal them well.

Like moving anything fragile make sure you pack so the items won’t move around or bang into each other too much ie foam, bubble wrap, or even just shredded up newspaper all help.

Good idea to take all of your most prized items on the plane, you could carry a decent size carry-on with you
