Makeup Shopping in New York!

my friend is going to the US and offered to go makeup shopping when she’s in New York :D!

it would be amazing if anyone that has been to New York could recommend the shops to visit,
I think she is staying at the Mariott Marquis.

and also any recommendations for products I should ask her to get me?? I want to try some brands you can’t get in Australia.

also does anyone know if it is okay to bring back nail polish in checked in baggage? not heaps, just a few bottles.

thanks so much 🙂

Definitely the Jordana Best Lash extreme mascara! It’s about $3.00 and is sold in duane reade.
I have brought back some OPI and Essie nail polishes and both were fine.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Sephora – they are across the US and there is one in Times Square near the Toys R Us store. I read yesterday that they will be opening one in Sydney next year – YAY…bet it still wont be anywhere as cheap as in the US though 🙁

Definitely hit Sephora – I spent a fortune there, so many fab brands to choose from! And there’s no problem bringing back nailpolish in checked baggage, just make sure you wrap it and bag it well.

I’ve never had any issues bringing back nail polishes, but yeah definitely need to pack them well.

I am crazy obsessed with Tarte cosmetics I have 4 of their amazonian clay blushes and love them all. I just recently ordered a bunch of Tarte products from Tarazz that I can’t wait to try them out! Josie Maran is another brand that I had to try out too. Her argan oil has been great so far – very moisturising and no scent at all which is nice.

I would definitely scope out the Sephora website to see what ‘s on offer… I think most of what’s online should be available in stores. They always have new Sephora favourites sets that come out… and I loved their little value sets.

I am also lusting after the Lorac Pro eyeshadow palette, but I don’t think you can get that in Sephora – maybe Ulta if they have that in New York?

That’s something I’d like to know too, for when I go to NY later in the year. I’d say it’d be ok – my Mum’s goddaughter bought a couple of nail polishes when she was in the US last month & got them through just fine. I wouldn’t take my word for it though.

I was an unlucky one, I’d probably try again, on a cheap bottle. Worst part was it was my fav of the 3 lol

Eeeek! I think I’ll pack a small roll of bubble wrap & sticky tape…or an old t-shirt or something else equally protective…

Kat von D is really good (especially for for eye shadow). It was recommended to me over other brands when I was looking for an eyeshadow palette at Sephora by a staff member. It’s quickly become my favourite. Great colours, nice and fine, blends well and lasts all day. The packaging is very cool too (as you would expect from Kat).

Sephora also have a fabulous nail polish remover, that will take the most difficult, glittery polish off with ease. It’s one of those ones you dip your nails into. Probably sounds like a silly product to get your friend to bring back, but it really is superb!

I also love the value packs Sephora do – I bought a pack of 6 different top cult brand lip products for $25. Sometimes they are product specific eg. a collection of mascaras, or a mix of products from a certain brand, or a certain theme, such as glamour. Take a look on their website and see what ones they have at the moment.

A fabulous department store is Henri Bendel. Some makeup brands worth trying are:

    Jouer
    Tarte Cosmetics
    It Cosmetics

    Hope this helps.

    I second these brands. 🙂
Tarte is super hard to get ahold of in Australia at a reasonable price. Also Urban Decay, especially if you are after any of the coveted naked palettes! I believe these should both be available at Sephora.

I did and didn’t have any trouble (I had over 10 bottles). I think I stayed at the same hotel – the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Lovely hotel and fabulous location, but you wouldn’t want to be scared of heights as you can see all around you in the glass elevators – 44 stories to the top, at high speed! It’s also very close to the Times Square Sephora (just a couple of minutes walk if that). I would recommend the Georgio Armani nail polishes (they have them at Sephora) – divine colours, and I haven’t seen them in Australia.

Be aware that they have a state sales tax in New York, so the prices of things are a little higher. If she is going to other states without sales tax, it could be best to get the make up there. If I’d realised I would have bought all my makeup at Sephora in Las Vegas, and not waited to New York. It probably doesn’t matter too much if you’re just purchasing a small amount though.
