Makeup expiry dates

So I found a great article on facebook that explained how to tell when a makeup product expires. Not sure if you guys know this, I sure didn’t! But some products have a little symbol on the bottom that tells you.
This article is worth a read if you are unaware! Hope someone finds it interesting and useful!

I do look at the expiry date of products but still tend to use them after the expiry date unless it obviously needs replacing. It’s important to replace mascaras regularly and products containing mainly natural ingredients tend to have shorter expiry dates than products which contain more chemicals.

Usually I keep using mine after expiry unless it’s going directly near my eyes (mascara, liquid eyeliner). Since my skin is not that reactive, I can keep using expired makeup without any issues.

I think bh has an article about this before, but i’m sure you can go by your 5 senses too! if anything has changed colour, look and smells, i think it is a sign to say good bye to them!

for me, i pay more attention to eyeliners and mascara as they are closest to my eyes and i feel that is the most important of all.

Yeah, I think I’ll just continue to use my senses… If it looks/smells bad then chuck it, otherwise I have to admit I’d probably waste a bit going by these guidelines.

I generally only count the time after I’ve actually opened a product. I have heaps of lippies that I haven’t yet even opened and I’ve had for over a year or two. I think given its sealed it should be fine until used.

    Does anyone else do this?

I went through my entire lipstick collection (which isn’t really a lot) yesterday and found a few bad lipsticks that I never wear and had to be thrown out because they were getting fuzzy white stuff on it 🙁 They weren’t expensive but it teaches me not to buy lipstick that I’m not certain I’ll wear, I guess. I haven’t had them for very long either (8 months or so).

I knew this but can just NEVER remember when I bought the stuff or started using it to then work out when the 6 months from that date is!

Yeah i agree. I think it is important to stick to the expiry date on mascara, as it can cause eye infections, but other than that i don’t throw make up out unless it becomes gross or the texture turns weird.

I remember seeing something like this quiet a while back and I was pretty shocked because I thought ‘I have so much make up that has passed the expiry date according to this article yet I still continue to use them and nothing seems wrong at all’. I think most of those dates are only approximate. It will vary from product to product and the expiry dates on the products aren’t always accurate, I’ve found. I agree that it’s better to use your own senses as a guide to determine whether a cosmetic product has expired. So many products go pretty bad before the alleged expiry date, whereas others seem perfectly fine up till months and months after.

I too, never knew what the symbol meant. I usually throw out my mascara after about 3 months, but everything else………….I usually just use my make up until there is none left.
