Native Box

I think I may have already confessed more than once to being a sample box addict… and I have some decisions to make as to which ones to cut to moderate my spending, though I’ll do that elsewhere.

I had been thinking of dropping Native Box, which is $20 per month. The box is made up entirely of organic, vegan, cruelty-free and locally produced products.

I had an initial 3 month subscription at $30 in total, which was great value, and I let it roll over to another three-month full-priced sub, but after box number 4, decided that I probably wasn’t interested enough in some of the more hippy stuff to continue beyond this three months (apologies to anyone seriously into ear-candling and foot-detoxing); also, while the boxx often has around teen products in it, samples are often one use – or mouthful – only, so the value is marginal.

However, box number five has raised the bar, and I’m now reconsidering! (Especially if I take this out of my grocery budget instead of my beauty budget…)

For my $20 this month I’ve received the following:

  • Absolutely Gorgeous Hand & Body Cream (deluxe sample) – having just trialled the cleanser from this brand in a discovery bag, I’m impressed;

  • Florentine Gold Pure & Natural deodorant (full-sized) : I’m happy to be sampling this in winter, when the deodorant stakes are lower!

  • Byron Bay Coffee: enough of this delicious coffee for two plungers worth

Byron Bay tea – small sample of herbal tea, enough for a 2 person pot

  • Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts – a rather lovely hairclip;

    • Serene Valley lavender bag: this will be nice for my linen closet
  • The Good Oil Hemp Oil lip balm: a mini pot which I’ll get quite a few uses from

  • TOM Organic Tampons (yes, TOM stands for Time Of Month): a cute little box of two certified organic cotton tampons;

  • Moltex nappy – disposable but 100% biodegradable. I was about to say I have no use for this, but perhaps if I wait another 30 years…

So, what do you think, my forum friends? Worth $20 a month?

    Big thumbs down to Native Box for what I got in the mail today. I was happy with my first box last year, and had good expectations for this quarters box.

    Unfortunately it seems they must have run out of items by the time they shipped me my box. 2 full size items were crossed off on my list of products – a hair comb & a Sea Siren nail polish, worth over $30. They didn’t replace the hair comb at all, and had the word ‘replaced’ with my nail polish – and then replaced it with a tiny Adorn mineral eye shadow ‘sample’ I can buy for $2.50 off Adorn’s site. I only had one full size ($6 item), was missing 2 full size items others had, and imo inappropriately compensated. Missed replacing one item & the other a tiny eyeshadow sample as a ‘replacement’ for a decent product is hardly going to keep me spending $25 a quarter. Sent off an email to their support this evening & cancelled my subscription

    This is a box subscription I’ve been seriously considering since I came across it a couple of weeks ago on Facebook. I’ve tried a few box subscriptions and think this one may be for me. I’ll think about it a little more…

    I’ve had a subscription with Native Box before and was really happy with the service and contents of the boxes. The good thing about Native Box is that you can use the ‘Gift The Box’ option to try it out first before signing up for a subscription if you prefer. I’m looking forward to receiving the next Classic Box 🙂

    Hi Iambe, I am not at all offended by your use of the word hippy! Living a sustainable and earth-friendly lifestyle takes commitment.

    Get native box this month for just $15 with code OCTMAD

    Damit! I knew Native Box would lift their game when I unsubscribed! That box sounds great!

    I took out a month by month subscription and the first was probably the same time as yours Iambe as the first 3 were good and interesting (still haven’t used my ear candles tho – sounds a bit scary!) and then #4 was a dud and by then I had subscribed to LHI monthly as well as their quarterly Eco (and finding Eco box similar to Native Box), and not a real fan of some of the food in Native Box.
    So I unsubscribed and emailed them to that effect – it was about 2 weeks before the start of the month, when the next payment would come out, but like softness, I had to pay for another box before my termination took effect. So a monthly subscription isn’t really a month to month, but month to month + 1 month!

    For $20, this sounds way better than my June LHI box!
    But I’m not going to resubscribe. If I did, I think a 3 month subscription would be the way to go, then it stops at 3 months and you don’t get tied into paying for another month.

    Thanks, guys – I think you are right, and I’ll let this one go – as I still have one box to go on my second three month sub I ought not to have to pay any more. I might get a gift sub for my dear friends living eco-sustainably in Mullumbimby, though! (Petal, please don’t take offence at my “hippy” crack – I really admire the ethics of this lifestyle; I’m just too citified for it to work for me!)

    Hi Iambe, I have wondered why so many people were subscribed to these boxes when there has been so much dissatisfaction with them. However, as I am into all that hippy stuff, the Native Box is one I will probably subscribe to once I’ve used up my backlog of skincare (which will take a while!). I don’t think I could see myself subscribed to it for the long-term unless they kept on expanding their product range.

    Iambe I don’t really know if it’s worth it or not, they do sound like not your normal run of the mill products.
    I think perhaps if you are subscribed to all the beauty boxes (LHI!, BB, Violet Box, LHI! Eco) cull one of those? I know you get different products, but over time the products mostly seem to be repeated in the boxes between them?

    as for waiting 30 years for the nappy use, if its 100% biodegradable I would like to think it will at least start to break down by then LOL

    lol Iambe – another 30 years to try the nappies! I actually tried the Native Box for a box a couple of months ago but I personally wasn’t really suited to it so I decided to terminate it. Unfortunately they made me buy another box before I could actually terminate my ‘membership’. Not really happy at all with that lot. I’ve put my name down for Wantable though just last week as they were offering a 30% discount which was nice plus a personalised system to pick products that would suit me so I may stick with them if I like the products. Wantable sounds interesting too to me because the products also may be new to me as it’s an American brand – things I probably haven’t already tried. Price is steeper than Native box though! ; )

    Thankyou for your expertise in the boxes! It’s been interesting to receive them and find which one is right for me and it’s great to read about other’s experiences here too on Bh about them.
