Why does my foundation never go on nicely??

Hey all! I’ve recently been struggling with my foundation. No matter what way I put it on I seem to always look cakey and dusty, with orange streaks or spots everywhere. I use liquid foundation (mineral powder foundation always looked funny and did no coverage for me) and a translucent powder. I’ve recently changed foundations because I found a shade that works better but if anything it’s MORE noticeable now. I just want a smooth finish but I’m not getting that. I moisturise and use primer beforehand and go lightly with the powder.

Should I be spending more on these products or ditching the powder or something? Any tips or advice would be very appreciated!

Hi kikichan666, can you tell us how you apply your foundtion? Do you apply using a brush or sponge? What sort of finishing powder do you use after? Do you usually go after a matte finish or dewy finish? When you choose your foundation, do you chose the ones for oily skin type or normal/combo skin type?

By the sounds of things, I think you might need to start exfoliating your face. Generally you should be doing this at least 1-2 times per week as it gets rid of all the dead skin cells that you may not be able to see yourself. Doing this will allow a clean canvas for your face.

Use a sponge and add a few drops of oil such as rosehip oil to your foundation so that it would spread better.

I used to have this problem a lot. My hands would never blend in the foundation enough and brushes would always leave streaks. I found switching to a damp beauty sponge really helped me get a more even finish. I hope this helps 🙂

If you are having trouble with foundation application look firstly at your skin. And treat it from the core. Have a look around at some different skin care products and keep trying until you find something that works. What type of skin do you have?

Buy a beauty blender sponge ( you can get cheap versions from kmart that are just as good ) and use it damp

I get this aaalll the time when I powder my face! It’s just not worth powdering! If I use only foundation my skin looks smooth and flawless!

Definitely agree with ‘imalittleteapot’ regarding using a product suited to your skin type, and bear in mind this can change.
growing up i could use a liquid with no problems, but now if i try to apply it, it moves around on the skin, sits weird and no matter my application process, it doesnt look nice. Every now and then depending on the day, I can use a powder lightly and it goes ok for a while.
But my normal foundation has to be mousse now. It seems to just suit my skin well and looks great.
So either have a facial to find out what works for you , or just try different mediums

I think the problem is that you don’t know what your skin type is and you are choosing foundations that are probably wrong for you. I would suggest you go to a counter, or even book in for a facial, and have someone examine your skin to see what type you have. If you have combination skin, it could be that your t-zone is a bit oily but the rest of your face is dry and that could be where the issue is.

Also, look at your application. You could be putting to much on at once. Watch some you tube videos about application. It’s better to do light layers and really buff each layer into your skin. Chloe Morello has some good videos, as does Lisa Eldridge. Personally I use a buffing brush to apply mine foundation and then I go over that with a damp beauty sponge.

I use a dab of Garnier Micellar Cleansing water on a cotton pad all of my face when I wake up (after the initial splash of cold water). This has dried by the time I have made a coffee. Then when I apply foundation I have a better ‘canvas’ to work with – the oily bits aren’t as oily, and the dry bits have been hydrated. I usually read ‘miracle’ instead of ‘Micellar’ when I grab it, normally because I’m half asleep. Which also shows that you can use this product with next to no thought involved. Winning.
