Ugh – Bad Dermatologist Appointment

Rant incoming..

So my skin has been fine for years and back in June I decided to test out Kora products cue burning sensation / tons of cluster break outs ect…(after 3 weeks of usage).

Since then I stopped those products completely and just went back to Cetaphyl but it hasn’t calmed down still continuous breakouts and in areas I’ve never had them before like forehead.. (I received the Natural instincts and did the tests on my neck and didnt get a reaction but because of all the crazy reactions decided to hold off putting anything on my face to irritate it anymore).

Anyways last week I bite the bullet and went to doctor and got a referral and he chastised me for waiting so long (I didn’t think it was that long)..

Today, I got to the Dermatologist and immediately as I walk in he says “WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR FACE?”

Um whaaaat as if that’s how you start our meeting.

He proceeds to disregard everything I told him about certain antibiotics – as I had them before years ago and they had done nothing for me (prescribes them anyways)..

Follows by him saying I should after 2 weeks of the antibiotics start Roaccutane (when I’ve told him countless times my skin is super sensitive / you try prescribing what can only be described as super intense and anything but for someone with sensitive skin).

Livid wtf did I just spend 260 for to get prescribed 2 things I didn’t want?!!

Also am I wrong to think that Roaccutane is far too strong for my skin sensitivity?

I’m at a loss what to do now..

I’m so glad I read this today, I’m off to see the doctor about my acne and skin tomorrow so this has made sure that I ask a lot of questions!

I hope you can finally find something that works darasparkle xx

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Good luck Laura! I hope your derm is lovely, let me know how yours goes 🙂

The antibiotics I am on (3 tablets a day) is erythromycin. They have started to really calm down my skin (I did try them many years ago in Canada and they never did anything) but this time they are starting to bring down the inflammation.

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

OMG get rid of that derm now. Any derm that is THAT gung ho about proscribing roaccutune is one to watch.

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

I just still think as a first time appointment with only speaking to me for under 5 minutes it seemed way too quick of a jump!

Especially, as he could tell I was hesitant and he was very adamant about me signing a consent (in case I change my mind)…

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

glad to see that you found a good solution! phew

Thanks!! Me too!! Now, just to try and be calmer and less stressed about it as I`m sure that`s not helping my hormones either haha

    Hi Dara

I am very sorry to hear what you have gone through.

Having a bad reaction is in itself bad enough. You really should not be put through all these crap.

If I were you here’s what I would do:

    1. Check with the unsw GP you went to. I used to see Sydney Uni GPs and I was quite sure i went to them even after i have graduated. There may be extra charges but a good GP is hard to come by.

    2. Consult a different GP for 2nd opinion.

    3. Make a complaint about the dermatologist. You don’t want someone else to go through the same and this type of behavior should be deterred.

    4. I am no expert in this, but have you consider seeing a qualified beauty therapist? I would normally recommend people to go to GP for serious skin problem, but seeing that you have preference to not use the drugs prescribed I think you can explore other options in the meantime. Say, if I feel depressed and anxious and go see a psychiatrist he would prescribe me drugs only because that’s what he is trained to do. If I go see a well being coach he would ask me to eat well and meditate.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed reply, skincare junkie xx

      1) I am definitely going to give them a call tomorrow and see I can – it would be much better as she has all my previous health records and such too so it`s more of a personalised appointment, which would then follow to your 2) getting a second opinion.

      3) I`ve looked into how to make a complaint so it`s on my list of to do`s – I did find a bad review on him after some intense researching and saw a complaint that he spent longer recording the appointment than the appointment itself (he recorded his thoughts on the appointment on a tape recorder when our time was done it struck me as odd not waiting till I left the room to do it)…but upon reflection he did spent an awfully long time doing that vs. actually asking/discussing anything with me directly.

      4) That`s a great idea – I did consult with a registered beauty therapist consult at Avene and they were absolutely lovely and I have been using their new extreme range (and I have to say it`s already done so much at taking the redness away – so pleasantly pleased with them).

What a drama! I hate doctors, I really do. After forking out so much, it’s more than a pain to go back to your GP, but this dermo is not worth your time.

I know very little about Roaccutane, it sounds scary. I really hope you can get this resolved dara. It’s quite a while since this started with the KORA.

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

      Fingers crossed for you dara!

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

      Thanks lovely 🙂

I am thinking I am finally on the mend (don`t want to jinx it) but no new break outs and the breakouts are healing and a lot of the redness has started to dissipate.

I guess he wasn`t all wrong (the antibiotics have seemed to work this time) I guess maybe because taking 3 times a day?

Also been using Avene extreme range and I am really seeing amazing results – redness has seriously gone away 50%

I`ll post some before and after photos in a couple weeks – I think I`ve found my HG range!

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Have to agree with you Avene products are great! When I was getting deep TCA peels it was the only brand I could use as my skin was red, sore and even water hurt but Avene soothed and helped healing. They make some great kits but I had to buy from USA site and get it shipped here but it was totally worth it!

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Avene is amazing! So gentle and great, I wish I`d found it earlier!

Oh darasparkle!!! you poor darling – Mother Hen here again and I’m just seeing this now. I do hope you are starting to feel better. I need to say that I have no right to tell you what to do, unless caring about you qualifies???? Definitely DON’T return to the Dermatologist – for goodness sake, if you’re referred to a Dermatologist you will have something that needs fixing and to greet you like he did is as unprofessional as it gets plus completely wrong. There’s no way he’s going to be on the same wave length as you.

I’m not being very helpful, I’m sorry but you need to find someone who is sympathetic for a start and who will listen to you. Hugs, Hun – I hope there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Please don’t feel that any of this is your fault. It is essential to find someone you can trust. Take care.

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Thank you so much Mother Hen!! <3

I truly appreciate it, I definitely won`t be going back there.

I agree, I don`t want to have someone super judgmental talking to me. I`m still super taken back that it even happened in the first place but will slowly get over the fact that not all professionals are cut from the same cloth and leave it at that.

I have a pretty busy week this week and with the long weekend I`ll have to try and book something else with a different GP next week (will wait and see if things calm down by themselves with more rest and mild cetaphyl in meantime).

Will keep you all posted xx

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Hi, Sweetie – darasparkle, SO pleased you`re going to see a different GP. Also pleased you`re using Avene as that is an excellent brand. The only other thing I can suggest is talking to a really good pharmacist, if you have someone you can trust. Their experience is so varied they can often assist more than a GP. Good luck, Hun and hopefully by the time I get back from holidays things will be so much calmer and better.

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

        Have an incredible vacation!

I`ve really been enjoying using Avene it`s like you can feel how gentle their products are immediately.

        Where are you off too?

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Thanks, darasparkle. Family wedding then a week of total relaxation with just us (husband and me!) on The Sunshine Coast. You take care, won`t you.

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Besides Cetaphyl for cleansing, are you using mild & gentle moisturisers that keep your skin hydrated, without aggravating the issue you`re dealing with?

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

I`ve been using the Avene range as my GP recommended as something mild and for sensitive skin.

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

I second what everyone else is saying – go back to your GP, with the scripts the Derm prescribed and talk through them with your GP – I’d suggest booking a double appointment so you have plenty of time

I find if I have a few questions for my GP or Specialist, it really helps to jot down notes on my phone so I don’t forget to ask things and need to return

I am sorry you had such a poor experience with the Derm – very unprofessional for him to blurt out that comment, it’s demoralising and inappropriate. I’d be very reluctant to return to him. Make sure your GP is aware of the behaviour of the Derm at your appointment, especially if you request to see an alternative specialist

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Thanks so much! Great idea on double appointment time 🙂

Also wonderful idea about writing down the questions it is always so confronting to remember everything once put on the spot!

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

I was refered to a Derm as I wanted to go on Roaccutane. Other than prescribing ‘tane to me my Derm was not helpful at all. She did not help me figure out how to cope with the temp side effects of ‘tane. I did a ton of research online especially on acne.org before going on the med so I prepped myself.

Whenever I visited her she never let me ask any questions. When I would she would start talking really fast and get me in and out of her office within 10 mins tops. I always ended up feeling like I was asking the wrong questions or just one of those ‘dumb patient’ that they talk and roll their eyes at over the water cooler.

I know I’m a fairly reasonable person but feeling negative after my first few appointments I never went back for any of my follow up appointments. I think I had 2 more appointments that I never went to. I had all my prescription scripts by then. I also left her a review on yelp I think. She was just a little to closed and cold for me to ever recommend her to anyone.

Dara three months of breakouts is not an unreasonable period to wait before seeing a professional. Idk why he blurted out what he did but it’s not nice. Get a second opinion with your GP as someone suggested above and research the heck out of any meds you take so you can read how others cope with the potential side effects. GL 🙂

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Ugh that`s the worst. It`s like they make it seem as though you are inconveniencing by asking questions and trying to be diligent.

Ooh that`s a good idea, I never thought to check Yelp for reviews. I am definitely going to do that next time + see if he has any reviews.

I have to pay out of pocket for all my appointments as I`m not Australian and it just sucks to think I nearly paid an entire weeks rent to get scurried out of the office, treated so poor and left feeling worse than I came in.

Thanks! I didn`t think it was unreasonable either as I did actually see a GP and specialist back in July to see what to do about the Kora reaction. I think it`s all connected – whether the derm yesterday agreed or not (he didn`t say either way) but I feel as though it`s connected and it`s just had a hard time bouncing back which is why I am a bit weary to jump on the intensive meds band wagon.

Did you find your skin cleared a lot by going on those meds? Did you have any crazy side effects? I realise everyone is different just wondering if you are one of the success stories or not.

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Oh I`m a success story! I was on 10 mg of `tane for 8 months from May `14 – Jan `15. I came out of the journey with clear skin and have been clear since. I actually stopped breaking out 3 months into my treatment so if you factor that in than I have passed my two year mark back in Aug. But if you count from the date I got off the meds than I`ve been clear for a year and 8 months.

        Side Effects

Dry skin (cleansed & moisturised with cetaphil and protected with spf 50+ sunscreen, sometimes used an umbrella if particularly sunny and no I didn`t care if ppl thought I was weird lol)

Dry lips (Dermal lip balm, a discovery I made when my pharmacist gave me a pack of free products because I was on `tane)

Dry eyes became super dry (used eye drops)

Sporadic hair shedding (took HSN supplement, helped immensely, should have taken it all throughout my treatment, regret stopping in the middle and starting up again later)

Eczema flares became worse (prescription ointment)

Sporadic joint pain (dull pain on back bone, took krill oil supplement all throughout my `tane treatment, I had pain in Aug, than it went away and came back in last month)

Dull knee pain in last month (Krill oil supplement)

Immune system weakened in last months of treatment, caught cold that took ages to go away

My side effects all went away once I stopped `tane. The oils on my skin came back gradually. It took about 3 months to see oil in my t-zones. I still take HSN supplements and wash hair with an anti dandruff shampoo with 3% salicylic acid. I will do this indefinitely. Its not that `tane is making my hair shed…that med has left my system long ago, its just `tane made me aware that I need to take better care of my hair. Hope that makes sense. And yes, everyone is different and my symptoms might not be the same as others.

The one thing that really puzzled me was the reaction people had when I told them I was on `tane. People reacted with a lot of hysteria which I found comical. Once I was annoyed at my boss (she was known to be verbally abusive to everyone) and one of my co-workers said I was reacting the way I was because I was on `tane. Hmm ok whatever. Fairly certain I would be annoyed regardless of whether I was on `tane or not. If given the chance to do it all over again (not that I want to lol) I would never tell anyone but my parents and siblings about going on `tane. Its no ones business and honestly the hysteria behind `tane is silly and grossly overblown (at least from my research and experience).

That being said I`m not an expert and I`m not trying to sway your decision on what you put into your body. Do your research and make that decision for yourself. What worked for me may not work for you.

Edit: sorry my comment is so long

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

That`s wonderful to hear! I`m elated that it worked for you. I definitely think it can get a bad reputation after a lot of the horror stories but people always forget to hear the good stories too! I was reading about the joint reactions some people have had happy to hear yours went away afterwards.

My cousin (male) was on it while he was a teenager when his skin was much worse than mine and he too is a success story. I`m more weary being a girl because of the pregnancy implications and that`s my biggest concern mostly as a TMI but I was on implanon last year and got a whole heap of side effects so I came on it and tried a different birth control the mini pill and I`ve only had one period in 8 `months so if I do take the tane` I will for peace of mind have to take a monthly pregnancy test to make sure.

Of course my concerns are anecdotal in that I`ve had some adverse reactions to medications before. I get motion sickness and flushed skin when drink/have spicy food or am emotional (upset and angry or heightened emotions I get rashes and face goes beat read). I was once told at an allergist that I`m allergic to myself to explain my weird skin reactions haha

I guess why I was most upset was he didn`t really seem to listen to my history and was immediately set on his game plan which seemed that he already decided what he was going to offer before even walking in the door as though I`m just a number and he tells the exact same treatment to everyone who walks through the door. And I have tried other topical creams doctors give you and that only responds with very burning skin/dryness everywhere the lotion is applied. Proactiv for an example was wayyyyy too harsh for my skin.

I did a skin trial back home which included a really strict regiment including meds and topical and that`s what I think has kept my skin great all these years (in remission as you say) so I think my skin has fallen off the wagon haha.

I`m in a highly stressful stage in my life so I do still feel that if I could stop the stress then my skin would calm down too.

I`ll see how I go with a long weekend to relax!

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Dara This post is really interesting to me. It sounds like you actually know yourself very well and have recognised that Stress is having a huge impact on you.

I wonder if it`s worth finding some relaxation therapy and seeing how that goes before trying another dermatologist?

Obviously I am not a doctor or even knowledgable in most things, but it`s something that jumped out at me reading this post of yours.

All the best with it all xo

      • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

That`s a really good idea!! Thank you!!

I have been going to the gym 3-4 times a week for the past 6 months but maybe adding something more relaxing would be helpful 🙂

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

That’s very unprofessional, particularly from a dermatologist! I mean they specialise in skin issues!!

Hope you can get it all
    Sorted soon xo

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Thanks lovely!! I hope so too! Now, I just want to hide in my cave (bedroom) and not come out till its fixed haha xx

  • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

Wow, I’d be giving that Dermatologist the flick darasparkle. Unprofessional if you ask me. How awful to be greeted with what he said to you.

I remember my daughter suffering bad acne and she was put onto some medication (but I can’t recall what it was now). I know it worked for her but she did get it from her GP.

It would be all very upsetting for you and certainly something you don’t need either.

    • 7 yrs, 6 mths ago

      Thanks Jatz 🙂

Just sucks because I work a lot and it was really hard to even make and keep this appointment and now, I`m scared to have to go back to GP and get another referral or whether I should just listen and try this even though instinctively seems like the wrong course of treatment.
