Primer not helping makeup last

There are a few threads on primer recommendations but they’re all a few years old, so I thought I’d start a new one to ask which primers actually help your makeup last all day? Or is this not possible without a long wear foundation formulation? I ise Om She Aromatheraphy primer and love the slippery soft siliconey feel to it (similar to L’oreal Base Magique, but the L’oreal can ball up a bit sometimes), they both help blur imperfections and I quite like the effect even without foundation over the top, but neither seem to help my makeup last at all. By the end of the afternoon you can barely see it and at night when I wipe off with micellar water, there’s barely any colour on the cotton pad. The only other primer I’ve tried is Napoleon, which I didn’t really notice doing anything, and certainly no blurring effect or nice feel on the skin. I love the om she but I’m wondering if I could do better…?

Garnier miracle blur is good, evens out pigmentation, smooths skin and provides a good base for your foundation. A little goes a long way and its reasonably priced.

I used to have the same issues until I found XANADU 24k Serum for my face. It has vitamin C and E, as well as gold flecks, which I found pretty awesome. It goes on very smoothly. Ever since I started using it as my makeup primer (my hubby got this for me as a birthday gift), I couldn’t be happier with the results! It also helps diminish wrinkles and leaves my face feeling very moisturized. It’s a bit pricey but a little goes a long way, I highly recommend it. It’s on sale at the moment, check out their website: http://www.isa-professional.com/

Try smashbox, makeup for ever or australis or nyx for a cheaper primer. You could also use a bb cream. I think exfoliating regularly makes a big difference and powdering over foundation too makes foundation last longer.

I use Innoxa Pure Silk Skin Primer.
It makes my makeup stay all day and feels amazing – it’s literally velvety when you put it on your skin.
    🙂

Definitely putting this on my hit list!

Hi EmmaApple ! – I can relate to that skin type! definitely have had sensitivity issues in the past – I always find when my skin is getting sensitive to give my skin some makeup-free days and slather it in natural oils like rosehip to help it calm down.

As for silicones – I feel that if your moisturiser or foundation already has silicone in it then you shouldn’t need a silicone based primer because it’s just too much silicone! Speaking of – I am absolutely LOVING the Innoxa Satin Sheen Natural Finish Foundation that I got with the Priceline makeup goodie bag – I apply it with a Real Techniques Miracle complexion sponge and it imparts such a beautiful natural finish with no caking or flaking on the dry areas of my skin. Interestingly enough it has dimethicone in the ingredients (it explains why the texture is so silky and smooth) so I find I almost don’t need a primer when I use it.

I’ve been thinking about getting the Innoxa Pure Silk Skin Primer because I’ve read such good reviews about it (including kayrahmate’s above!) so will probably try it next once I run out of my Too Faced Primed & Poreless.

Here is some more info on dimethicone (silicone): One of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics, dimethicone works as an anti-foaming agent, skin protectant and skin & hair conditioner- it prevents water loss by forming a hydrating barrier on the skin. Like most silicones, this ingredient has a unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable. When applied to the skin, its known for creating a subtle gloss that feels smooth and silky to touch. It also acts a mild water repellent by forming a protective barrier on the skin, and can fill in fine lines/wrinkles on the face, giving it a temporary “plump” look.

I’ve only ever tried the primers like the ones you’ve mentioned *EmmaApple*, and found them to be highly over-rated – my make-up just skidded all over the place I and I ended up with more visible wrinkles and dry patches. As you said, they’re good for a blurring effect without make-up, but that’s about it. The Clarins Fix Make-Up recommended by *Trish* sounds interesting. Perhaps a make-up finishing spray might me a better option than a primer hmmm…..food for thought. Thanks Trish!

My pleasure, cat lover. I rarely go overboard about new products (new to me) as I usually need to try them for a while before I’m satisfied but this Clarins Fix Make-Up is as good as I’ve used. I tried it on mineral powder and it’s heaps better than the expensive one I’ve used and I’ve tried it on other makeup too. It’s so gentle with a subtle fragrance and I was amazed with the staying power after a busy day – OK, I’m retired so no longer race around like a mad woman but I had a long, busy day and makeup looked fresh at the end of many hours.

The primers I’ve liked have been silicone based and I know you can’t use the silicone products, cat lover.

My Nude by nature Primer is pretty awesome. It’s got a lot of good ingredients in their and find this makes my makeup last the day out 😉

I also love this primer since it feels pretty gentle and calming on my skin! Another I really like is the Benefit Porefessional

I have combination skin and I do find that the Face of Australia face base primer helps my makeup adhere better to my skin. I like the SPF version (the black tube) and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling too tacky. I don’t really touch my face often though but I think that my foundations don’t oxidize as much, don’t transfer as much and they do blend more easily on top of that primer. I’ve purchased it twice and I’m probably going to repurchase it in the near future.

I quite like this primer too. From my experience primer stops my foundation oxidating and skidding off my face by the end of the day. Always a crappy look. You can get away with cheaper foundation too.
This primer is good cause it hydrates and protects too.
I’d also recommend a blur product. Nanoblur or loreal is great as a primer too.
