Nail Biter

Whenever I am nervous or anxious I bite my nails without even knowing I am doing this. I can no longer afford to get acrylic nails and would LOVE to have beautiful nails at a decent length, but I have been a nail-biter for my whole life and doubt I can stop the horrible habbit.
Is there anything (cheap/affordable) that I can do to stop?
Is there something I can make to rub on my fingers that will stop me from biting?
To be honest, I think if I put anything on there that tasted gross I’d just wash it off and bite them again.
I really am not sure of what I can do.
Thanks ladies.

Hi!! Like you I’m an appalling nail biter and have been all my life. Unfortunately NOTHING has worked for me; not the foul tasting nail additives or applying nail polish to my little stumps, not even my Dad giving me the quick as a flash nail slap whenever he saw me when my fingers in my mouth! Like some of the above beauties have mentioned, you’ve got to be motivated and persistent. Via some unknown miracle, my nails actually got a bit of white tip growth on them recently and after much research I decided to get BioSculpture Gel Nails. I love them!! However, I now have two new addictions: nail polish and picking off the gel!! Argh!!

Nail biting is a habit, which can be as addictive as smoking, etc. Like smoking you need to be driven to stop the addition.

Things you can try to make it a more unpleasant experience are:
    – wear nail polish, as nail polish tends to taste horrible when you chew on it = so should make you less likely to bite your nails.
    – put some castor oil on your nails (most people hate the taste)
    – rub a cut hot chilli pepper on your nails (not advisable if you wear contact lens – speaking from experience!!)
    – put a drop or 2 of Tabasco sauce or another hot sauce on your nails (again not advisable if you wear contact lens)

I was a nail biter too. Then my mum sat me down and completely grossed me out pointing out all the horrible things that we touch each day and all the germs and stuff that would be on your nails. She said if I touched something that someone else just touched, then I’m basically biting their fingernails too…and they could be a ball scratcher. For me that was enough – I’d find myself biting, freak myself out and then stop.

Hey there! There are many articles and products that can cure your problems with nail biting. You can try many treatments such as Sally Hansen’s Nail Biter which is only $12.45, you can find the reviews here:

Just like Cathy said ^, you’ve got to distract yourself with something else, you can have someone to watch over you or treat yourself after disengaging in this habit.

I stopped biting about 3 years ago after 30 years of biting. You need to have an incentive to do it and for me it was my sister becoming a nail blogger and me developing nail envy and wanting to wear polish too.

What I did was whenever I found my fingers in my mouth I just took them out and distracted myself with something else. You just have to be persistent and consistent in it, no “just a little bit” or “just one nail”. Then when they get a bit of length carry a file with you everywhere. I mean it. Cos when you have a rough bit you will try and justify nibbling at it to fix it and then you’re right back where you started.

So this is the zero cost way to stop biting your nails. But beware, instead of a nail biting habit I now have a nail polish habit and have accumulated 325 bottles in 3 years. Oops!
