Mole Removal

This is a bit of a sensitive topic for me, but I would like some advice from you all!

I have grown up with four large, dark, flat moles on my legs (two on each leg) and I absolutely hate them.

I am so embarrassed about them I always wear skinny leg jeans or leggings when I go out even when the weather is warm and people think I’m crazy and ask why I never wear shorts etc and I just say I get sun burn very easily and my legs are super white.

It’s not something I could ’embrace’ or not care about because I’m so self conscious about it, so I have been considering and looking into mole removal. I am also terrified of skin cancer etc so I just want to get rid of them altogether.

So this is where I would like some advice or experiences with this subject. Has anyone ever had a mole removed? How much did it cost? What were the end results like?

I live on the Gold Coast, so if anyone has experienced this from the same area that would be really helpful.

I had one removed years ago from above my eyebrow, I was seeing a plastic/cosmetic surgeon to have a skin cancer removed from my nose and he asked if I wanted the mole removed at the same time, did an exellent job and left no scarring.

I’ve reported the previous post by zenith clinics as spam.

I have lots of moles, had them ever since I was a kid. the most noticeable one, is a raised brown mole on my upper lip. its a bit smaller than the unsharpened end of a pencil.
I got bullied for it as a kid. when austin powers came out kids would go “moley moley moley moley” and all that shit.

when I was younger I really wanted to get it removed, but now I think its what makes me look different 🙂 and I actually like that I didn’t get it removed to “conform” or fit in.

things that bother me is when people say “you’ve got a mole” its like no shit please tell me your point?
and also the few times I’ve gotten makeup done they always cover it up without asking me first.
THAT offends me. because they just assume its something I’m ashamed of.

it makes me sad when people are so bothered by their moles 🙁

My daughter (15 at the time) was self conscious about 2 moles – the smaller one was behind her ear and down a bit, and quite visible, but not that large. The other was a larger oval one and in the middle of her upper back and this one concerned her as it was so visible in any tops or dresses or swimmers she wore. I didn’t see anything to be conscious about (so many people have way worse) but in the end took her to our GP. He loves nothing better than getting the scalpel out! And said he could do it (so all bulk billed) and he tackled the smaller one first and we were to come back in a few weeks for the larger one on her back.

We went back and it seems she has what is keloid scarring – instead of a flat scar she has raised scarring (my older sister also has this) and he was not going to do the other, instead sending us to a skin specialist surgeon. Best thing he could have done as the specialist was dead set against removing it (unless she was adamant), but he so put the wind up her about how bad the scarring could be and how insignificant her mole was! Well, it did cost us a consultation fee, but worth it and now over 2 years later, she’s quite happy with her mole and realises how silly and vain she was at the time!

I’ve had 2 moles removed, both done by my GP (who bulk billed me both times – score!). Mine were average sized moles and both required a few stitches after removal. When they healed I was left with a small scar for each. The scar from first one I had done (about 8 years ago) is pretty much invisible now, even I have trouble seeing it. The other one which was done about 2 years ago is still a pale pink colour but isn’t very noticeable (especially since it’s on my foot). I agree with what other people on here have said – go and see a GP and go from there! Hope all goes well for you 🙂

Thank you for your replies ladies!
I will definitely go and visit a GP, now I just need to look into a good clinic here as since moving away from my home town I haven’t felt comfortable going to a new GP as I had been going to the same clinic my whole life. So it will be a big step for me haha but I will do it!

I’ve had several removed – maybe 12? and I’m 24 yrs old. I have quite spotty skin and burn easily, so I get checked regularly. I’ve been to both a plastic surgeon and a GP to have them removed. The ONLY difference for me was the price. GP was almost free, plastic surgeon was in excess of $400 for 2 mole removals.
I am prone to keloid scars aswell, so I do have some scarring from removal. It used to bother me ALOT but you learn to live with it.
Your best bet is to book an appt with your GP and either they can do it for you, or they will refer you to a specialist who can look into it further 🙂 It’s a pretty simple process 🙂

  • I had a big one on the side of my face and hated it all my life. Then five years or so ago I took my self to my fave skin specialist (who has seen me before for skin checks & acne in my 20’s) and he removed it for me. Yay! It was so good to be free of that thing! It was around 1.5cm X 1cm and I have a small flat white scar where it was and I much prefer that.

I’m glad I got it done when I did because that skin specialist is retired now!

    Hi Kamillyon,
I had two very large moles on my face when I was younger, so I certainly feel your pain. My mum works for a skin specialist, and even against his advice of leaving them to be, I had them removed. Now, he wanted me to leave them be, as they were not cancerous, and it was more of a vanity issue. I didn’t care, I would have gone to great lengths to get rid of them. Thankfully he caved in and said he would remove them. It was the best thing I ever did for my confidence. However, where one of the moles were, I have a white patch. That is because he just zapped that one. With the other one he actually had to surgically remove it and I got 3 stitches, that one has only left a very miniscule scar. It depends on how deep the roots on them are.
You will need to see your GP to get a referral and I am sorry I am not sure of the cost. But one thing that I will say is that it is definitely worth it, if they are bothering you that much.

I read somewhere, if you had them since you were a baby/kid.. it shouldn’t be a problem. I had one too.. but it so tiny just under my neck. Now I’m thinking to get it removed.
