I need a great foundation and concealer for mature skin!!

Hi all, I am in need of a foundation and concealer that is suitable for mature skin aka wrinkles and fine lines! I keep buying ‘drug store’ foundations in the hope but soon find they highlight the wrinkles. I’m hoping to get to one of the counters tomorrow at Myers or David jones however it’s been years since approaching any of those as I’ve not have such great experiences. I don’t even know how they do things these days. I remember having a brief discussion on here a couple of years ago about how they do things these days but I can’t remember! I want to be able to try it and see how it wears and what it looks like in natural light. Advise and tips on how to approach them and also their protocols on testing please would be so appreciated!! Thanks ladies and apologies if this has been covered a zillion times!!

Sorry this isn’t really relevant to the topic but I thought I’d should spread a bit of positivity with this quote I quite like, “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky” -Rabindranath Tagore

DermacolFoundation posted spam in the previous post. They have been spamming the forums on and off for months.

I have dry skin and currently using Max Factor Face Finity 3 in 1 which is wonderful. I was lucky to get that at a MF sale .

I find since I’ve turned 50 that a BB cream works better for me than a heavier foundation (I tend to use foundation as a concealer – just a bit dabbed under eyes and any blemishes). My favourite BB is Sanctuary Spa Skin Perfecting BB Cream which is amazing. I use ‘med’ even though my skin is on the light side and it really evens out my skin and looks so polished but totally natural. It also gives me a natural looking glow – I don’t even need blush. For me, less makeup as I get older seems to keep me looking younger.

Powder no longer works for my skin at all – I find it’s quite aging.

Lin294 and Trish, and all who have answered this topic. Thank you, there are a lot of good ideas here plus a lot of brands that I haven’t heard of so I will check them out.

Not sure about powder yet, I would like to try a mineral powder and would probably try the MOMMA one as recommended by Petal and Trish.

Lin294, My mother used to use Boots products and loved them, I haven’t seen them in the shops for years. Do you buy them online?

I can see I am going to have a lot of samples to try, but worth it if I can find a foundation that actually suits my changing skin. x

I know what you mean by powders sometimes looking cakey or powderey, Petal. I’m delighted that I decided to go with MOMMA semi matte because this doesn’t look at all powdery on me. The matte looked heavier even though it was the same colour. The semi matte looks like my skin but better.

Pandr the MOMMA company also have liquid foundations. I’ve been a powder person all my life – no idea exactly why but they appeal to me more. BUT it is trial and error and what suits one person perfectly can look ghastly on someone else. Good luck! How are you getting on, Growing Old? Hope all is well with you.

Hi everyone. Age – 71 and definitely no expert.
I have a fairly simple approach. My skincare product of choice is Monsia Skincare. After cleansing & toning with their products I apply Vit E oil around the eyes and anywhere I can see lines and especially on the neck. Then I apply the intense day moisturizing day cream with SPF15. Finally I use Boots #7 Match Made Service foundation, no powder. Followed by blusher, eyebrow pencil, mascara and call it a day! I found that the power on top of foundation was a big no, no for me because it just looked “caked”.

Thanks Petal, for your very comprehensive review of foundations for Mature Age skin. I am looking forward to trying a few samples of different foundations. It would be nice to find something that suits my changing skin. I am surprised at the number of people who like mineral foundation, I haven’t tried these but perhaps I should.

I have no idea how you feel about powders as opposed to liquid but I’ve recently bought MOMMA (Ministry of Mineral Makeup Australia) semi matte mineral powder and it’s great for fair skin. They have several shades, ivory suits me perfectly.

I first encountered the brand in my wonderful Discovery Bag over 12 months ago and while the colour was perfect something stopped me from repurchasing – I couldn’t put my finger on it. BUT with my alcohol allergy showing up recently I had to rethink. Most liquid foundations have alcohol in them so I looked at the MOMMA site again and went with the semi matte and it is perfect. I know that in the dinosaur days that I come from it was often frowned upon for an ageing beauty to go with powder but the effect is perfect for me. I like a soft, light effect, not a heavy foundation. You can build up but I am as pleased as I can be with the finish and it lasts all day.

The pots are small but inexpensive, they do have samples. Customer service is brilliant. Good luck!!! I know it isn’t easy! If I can be of any more help just ask.

(What follows are my comments on foundations for mature skin that were started on another thread. I have copied and pasted them here because this thread is more appropriate.)

I am in my early fifties. My skin is dry and probably very dehydrated. I say dehydrated because liquid foundations only last 2-3 hours without a primer. I have mixed feelings about silicone primers because most of them dry my skin out if I use them regularly. Some primers extend the longevity of a foundation, but not to a massive degree. Because my skin is dry, I don’t use powder to set foundation. This can be a challenge because some foundations don’t set on the skin.

When I bought a magnifying makeup mirror a couple of years ago, I was horrified to see that I had developed larger pores on my cheeks and nose. I was also dismayed to see how liquid foundations appeared in close-up. Most people recommend light coverage foundations for mature skin, but so far none of them have worked for me. This is because they quickly pool into the larger pores and accentuate them. These lighter foundations also highlight wrinkles, flakiness etc.

I’m using Estée Lauder Double Wear at the moment, and I love it as long as I apply it with a damp Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge so it’s not so cakey. The shade I have is too dark, but I mix it with a white foundation. I like this foundation because it sits on top of my skin instead of sinking in. So far, this is the longest lasting foundation that I have discovered. There are probably other Estée Lauder foundations designed for mature skin, but I haven’t tried them. (If anyone has dry skin, I recommend applying liquid foundation with a damp blending sponge. It makes a huge difference.)

One of the better foundations for not accentuating flaws is MAC’s Face and Body. I have only tried a sample of it, and I’m probably going to buy it for Summer because it is meant to be resistant to heat and humidity. My only hesitation with it is that it doesn’t provide enough coverage for my broken capillaries, so I need a concealer with it.

TVSN has a foundation called Genie Line Smoothing Foundation and a product called Genie Line Smoother to use as a base under it. I’ve seen the demonstrations on TV and they look great, but reviews are mixed (probably due to people not knowing how to apply the base). I’ve just started using their Cashmere Mineral Foundation and it’s quite nice.

Mirenésse Magic Touch Foundation looks good on my skin. Their Velvet Maxi Lift Foundation is good, but I think I prefer Magic Touch. My only hesitation with both these foundations is that they don’t adhere to my cheeks and nose where I have redness, so I need a primer with it. Also, the lightest shade in both these foundations are too dark.

I like 100% mineral powder foundations on my skin. Although they look powdery, they look better than many liquid foundations. Some mineral powders can fill in the larger pores. I like Jane Iredale PurePressed Base which is in a compact.

I’m still going to keep trying new foundations. Next on my list will be NARS Sheer Glow and something by YSL. I’m also going to try a Bobbi Brown foundation, but I’m not sure which one. I’m presently using the Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick but it isn’t working for me. I’d also like to try a CC cream from a high end brand; perhaps Smashbox.
