Epilating Help?

Hey! I recently bought an epilator (Braun Silk Épil 7) and I’ve been having troubles ever since.

My main trouble is always being left with little black hair dots – I’m always stubbly, it seems to just be breaking the hairs? I tried using it in the bath, after a shower, just normal, long hairs, short hairs – nothing seems to change this! I make sure to epilate at some point before too. I was thinking it’s the speed of the epilator but it only has two speed options that aren’t all that different from one another. I’d really like to get my moneys worth with this thing 🙁

Another problem is that if I try it anywhere besides my calves I get folliculitis. I’ve googled every way to prevent it but no luck. Any tips? I’m kinda worried my last case of folliculitis is scarring!

Thanks in advance and sorry if there’s already a similar topic

I have had a similar experience with mine and I have stopped using it for a while on my legs. I still use it for my underarms though, does a great job. Thanks for the tips ladies, I might try that too.

Thanks everyone for the input, I have been awfully ill so haven’t gotten to try the advice yet but I will be very soon and letting you all know!

Cheryl, I wouldn’t completely rule out an epilator. Some people swear by them, some hate it. I agree that this is definitely something you need to communicate with them before deciding.

I have one, but stopped using it, the hair seemed to grow back underneath the skin, which was weird. There’s a lot of good advice so far, would be keen to know how you go. Starting laser on Saturday @Rpear – nervous & excited! Hope it works.

Also, seems like a good place to share this embarrassing tidbit / bit of advice. I decided once, in a moment of complete laziness that epilating my eyebrow strays would save me heaps of time vs. plucking. BIG mistake! Never do this! I held the epilator to my eyebrow and the tweezers grabbed onto the fleshy bit and gave it one hell of a big pinch. Result: black eye and big welt. I haven’t told anybody what really happened, except you guys! Told everybody else ‘I bashed it on something’. Lol!

We have been thinking of buying one for my granddaughter, after reading thru here I think we will not buy one. Thanks forum

Always ask before buying something that expensive. I’ve always been self-conscious about my body hair because my hair is dark & my skin is so lily white that even when I’m clean shaven, you can see the little black hairs beneath the skin & it looked like I had a 5 o’clock shadow around my bikini line. I would have LOVED an epilator when I was in high school. Mum didn’t wax so I didn’t know how to do it & I couldn’t afford salon waxing. If you ask, she might love the idea too. Or, there might be something she’s desperate for. I believe in communication & I don’t like surprises.

I pinched myself around the bikini line & “elsewhere”. That’s another great thing about having a laser Brazilian! I get migraines, so I can handle pain, but it’s tricky & curved down there. I had little red graze marks, no swelling.
You know when you lie & say you bashed yourself on something, nobody believes you. They ponder wildly implausible possibilities in their minds, none of which make you look any smarter than trying to epilate your eyebrow. The thing is, it’s such a logical thing to think that you could clean up strays with the epilator. Who knows what your friends each secretly believe you did instead?

Epileptic? Hey mummabear you could hurt yourself – LOL!

On a serious note, *Rpear: how the hell did you get scarring? Did you hold it too close or without holding the skin taut & accidentally tweeze some skin?
(I hail the wonders of laser hair removal too. I’ve had my Brazilian done, too expensive to get my whole body done, though I’d like to.)

I have this epileptic as well. Unfortunately it now has a comfortable place in my cupboard. I found it quite uncomfortable to use and not nearly as effective as I hoped it would be. It was quite a disappointing purchase. I’m back to the razors :/
I hope you have more success than I did.

I had a similar experience to you with my epilator and found my skin was just far too sensitive for it! I ended up with scarring that only has gone away through laser hair removal ! It was frustrating because so many of my friends had no trouble and we had the same epilator! Good luck with it and you do have some good tips there! If they fail I do suggest laser hair removal !

How should my pressure be then? I push down fairly hard, though at first it was to try and keep going when getting used to the initial pain (I’ve never even waxed properly so I wasn’t prepared for that) and now I’m just more used to doing it that way.
I’m very appreciative of these replies as I was so close to giving up on epilating 🙂 feeling confident it will get better!

Sorry, I missed your reply. Not only am I doing multiple things at once, my computer’s playing silly buggers on me & it’s taking forever for pages to download.
You shouldn’t use any pressure, you should just glide it across your skin, just touching.
